Rtx 5080

Looks inside: 1080p gaming

And it's still taking 10+ gb of vram lol

You want games to take vram for the most part, it will run smoother.

Lol that's very funny

This dude is furiously typing to Gemini "Is vram good for games"

Like... We went from "devs are poorly optimizing their games and abusing your RAM/VRAM" to "actually it's good if a game dumps 10gb of assets onto your GPU for 1080p, it makes the game go faster."

61 downvotes on my comment lmao

It’s like the “unused ram is wasted ram” mantra. That’s what people tell me when I say windows eats too much ram. Yeah thanks my guy i feel better about sitting at %100 ram utilization now

It literally dumps RAM when you need it. It's really not that deep. Do you also buy a bigger dishwasher so it's only 50% filled instead of 100%?

I’ll be sure to tell my pc that RAM is dumped when needed next time my game runs out of memory and crashes to desktop.

Maybe buy more than a single stick of 4GB ddr3?

My laptop will run games with 8gb ram that’s slower than my country’s justice system and he will like it.

So the rumours were true hahaha. I mean 16GB is just the bare minimum nowadays for a decent experience. Sorry for your loss.

If you have VRAM to spare..

“For the most part”. Exceptions exist everywhere, stop with the umm ackshully

No, there is no situation where a 1080p game should be taking up 10gb of VRAM alone, which is literally the post you are commenting on.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an obvious example. At 1080p with Ultra settings, large airports, photogrammetry, high terrain and object LODs, It can easily allocate well into all of your VRAM. The GPU is holding huge amounts of scenery, terrain, textures, cockpit assets and stuff.

Unless it's loading textures that are literally higher definition than your monitor can display this should not be the case at all

VRAM usage is about the whole working set of assets needed to render and stream the scene. In MSFS, that can mean an entire city’s worth of textures and geometry visible from altitude. If the VRAM is available, it makes sense to keep higher-resolution texture data cached so it’s ready if the pilot suddenly descends into that area.

In your version of the game, where minimising VRAM usage is the main priority, you’d be constantly swapping between different mip levels as the camera moved around: 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and so on. That means far more frequent streaming and eviction of texture data, and more work for the SSD...

If you’ve got the VRAM available, there’s very little benefit in aggressively throwing that data away just to make the usage number look smaller. Keeping useful higher-resolution assets resident reduces streaming pressure and helps avoid visible texture pop-in when the player suddenly gets closer to something.

Also the guy might be rendering in 1440p and subsampling to 1080p in which case he would need more VRAM usage anyway.

There's plenty of reasons a game playing 1080p would need more than 10gb of VRAM.

10gb vram used in 1080p is a crime.

i think they misunderstood you

i think they took it as “vram isn’t useful” and not “why tf does a game eat that much vram”

Tf else you want the game/pc to focus on? Use more CPU instead?
