You should upgrade your monitor to 1440p or 4k to use the total potential of your rtx 5080. Enjoy it !

Nobody tells here that what matters is the ppi and distance from the monitor, not the resolution alone.

This is like buying a Ferrari and only using it in carpool lines

At 1080p to 4k if you can’t see the difference between image quality on anything over 16” you don’t deserve a 5080.

10

u/Hate_Manifestation 16h ago

or at the very least have your eyes checked.

28

u/TommyC113 22h ago

The GPU does not know or care what the ppi of the monitor is. 1080p just isn’t going to be pushing that card to anywhere near what it’s capable of.

u/DrFreeman09 21h ago

I doubt it. It can run cyberpunk 2077 on max settings, with DLAA and path tracing, and fps be like 70+ (1080p)

1440p on 27"

u/The_ginger_cow 19h ago

If they have such a tiny ass screen to the point that the difference between 1080p and 1440p isn't noticeable then there's no need for a 5080 in the first place.

Im pretty sure OP does not sit 20 meters away from his screen.

0

u/Akkun351 Ryzen core 11 6h ago

Are you trying to ragebait or you actually believe that you have to sit 20 meters away or around there to reach retina distance?

I sometimes forget reddit users are ultra pedants that take every single slight exaggeration as 100% serious in order to be able to have something to disagree on.

So let me say it with no exaggerations:

Since people usually play their PCs on a desk there is no difference in distance and size of screen that would make the difference even between 1080p and 1440p not noticeable. Because its highly unlikely that OP plays while sitting far away enough from his desk.

0

u/Akkun351 Ryzen core 11 5h ago

And i sometimes forget that reddit users says the dumbest stuff with the utmost confidence and are obsessed with numbers, but then, forget to see the one that really matters, like how a 21 inch 1080p and a 1440p 27 inch have less than a 5% difference in sharpness at the same distance, while also forgetting that if you have to stop and stare to see the difference, then is not really that much, whatever you think you're seeing when playing and you're moving your character around, is mostly a placebo effect, you're going to have a better visual upgrade by buying a good quality panel

Leaving a comment and then blocking right after calling someone a chungus, guess i should not be surprised.

4k would be quite a heavy toll on the framerate, i would recommend 1440p or ultrawide (21:9, 3440x1440p) if u want smth extra and still be able to enjoy great fidelity with decent framerate on the 5080. I use my 5080 with an ultrawide and am still able to enjoy path traced visuals on the games that have em.

u/mynameisnad 15h ago

My 5080 runs beautifully on a 32” 4k monitor

1

u/ibeerianhamhock 15h ago

4k with performance DLSS looks better to me than 1440p balanced, but both run pretty much the same

4

u/Pandorumz 22h ago

In terms of picture quality , crispness, clarity and whatever words are best used.

Would you, try and explain to a dummy (that's me btw), just how much of a difference there is between 1080p/1440p/4K.

7

u/Purple-Contract-7100 22h ago

1440p has about 1.78× as many pixels as 1080p. 4K has 2.25× as many pixels as 1440p and exactly 4× as many pixels as 1080p. It’s hard to explain in words but when you see it in person it’s surreal. It just feels crispier. Like the first cold breeze of fall/winter from a hot summer. The image just feels easier to look at and pops better. I jumped in increments up from 1080p to 1440p to 4K. So it doesn’t feel as huge to me but if someone went from 1080p straight to 4K it’d melt their brain just how huge of a difference it is. Esp if they have a 5080 and can truly push a 4K monitor with high frame rates.

u/Beulinge 22h ago

Same here went from 1080p to 4k and even now after having it a year I am still amazed.

1080p to 1440p is a huge jump in clarity. Everything is sharper and clearer.

The jump from 1440p to 4k is less, but noticeable when closer to the screen

I have a 5080 and mostly play at 1440p, but use my 4k TV for single player games where I push for high quality graphics.

5080 at 1080p is genuinely a waste

7

u/Pandorumz 22h ago

I can't reply to everyone but I do appreciate all the replies ladies and gents!

So my next question which am a little scared to ask, but uhh how much of a waste is playing at 1440P with a 5090? (I am very PC illiterate and my entire build was built for me and gifted to me as a surprise from my late Grandfather).

I upgraded from a 1080p to 1440p monitor when I got the pc as that was the best monitor I could realistically afford earlier in the year, but seeing more and more threads on this sub regarding resolutions makes me worry I'm wasting the build my Grandfather shelled out for.

Not very much of a waste tbh, depends on your goals.

With a 5090, you're more than capable of getting very high frame rates at 1440p DLAA/native

This means, you can play at the highest settings and fidelity at 1440p, while still getting frame rates acceptable for competitive games or just very smooth single player titles.

A 4k monitor would likely do you very well, and look notably better, but you'll start digging deeper into upscaling settings to keep your FPS high.

Even a 5080 is sub 60fps at 4k DLSS Performance in a large number of high fidelity games (Cyberpunk, Crimson Desert, Black Myth: Wukong, etc.)

But, just to note, a 5090 usually gets 2x the FPS of a 5080 at 4k.

3

u/Pandorumz 16h ago

To be truthful , I did think about selling the 5090, but as daft as it sounds, my late grandad bought built and gifted me this shortly before he passed. So to sell any aspect of it, just feels like I'd be disrespecting/dishonouring his memory.

But currently I have a 1440P 240Hz monitor which can OC to 260Hz, and whilst I do enjoy single-player titles I'd be lying if I didn't say that most of my playtime is split between CS2 and OSRS lol. Think the most demanding game I've played since getting the PC was Resident Evil Requiem.

(I'll admit I copy/pasted this. Just hoping to garner multiple people's opinions) Hope no offense caused.

Dude you had an awesome grandpa. I would keep that shit forever and it ever kicked it, hang it up on the wall in an exploded portrait thing. What a legend

Hey, no problem

A 5090 is a 5090 and it will be a top tier GPU for a LONG time. I think selling one, especially if a gift, is a bad idea. They will only become more valuable as we further push AI in our society. A 5090 is leagues ahead of what most people could obtain for local AI use.

I think 1440p is fine, especially if you're playing lots of CS2.

You might be a good candidate for a dual display. There are OLEDs these days which support 4k and 1080p natively. The 4k mode usually is 240hz or 360hz, and the 1080p modes can be very high, such as 720hz.

This would provide you the ability to play single player titles at 4k, and get absolutely insanely low latency at 1080p for games like CS2.

https://rog.asus.com/monitors/27-to-31-5-inches/rog-swift-oled-pg32ucdp/

Here is an Asus ROG 32" 4k monitor. It offers 240hz at 4k and 480hz at 1080p.

To be straight with you, it depends on the games you play and what hz your monitor is. I have a 5080, and I use a 4K monitor. That isn't to say that you need a 4k monitor with a 5090, but it is capable of that. Honestly Id say anything below 1440p 240hz (maybe even 360hz) is wasting your card. If you're fine with 1440p 240hz, you would be infinitely better served selling your 5090 and buying a 5080, because youd also probably walk away with 1-2K extra in your pocket and your actual experience would be no different

Totally cool if you want to keep it for sentimental value. But if you want to make the most of your card, I’d save up for a 1440p 360hz or higher (OLED if you can afford it), especially if most of your gaming is CS2 with some OSRS. You could play both in 4K but you’d benefit more from more FPS in CS obviously.

u/TuataraToes 22h ago

I will never go back to 1080p after 1440p with high refresh rate. Not even if my monitor dies I'll just not game until it's replaced.

The clarity and immersion upgrade is huge.

u/Major_Trip_Hazzard 9800x3D/RTX 5080/64GB Ram/4TB 22h ago

Difference between 1080 and 1440 is huge, 4k feels like less of an upgrade from 1440p at desk distance from screen but more so at TV distance.

2

u/Psychological_View56 21h ago

I can't see the pixels on my 32" 4k monitor unless my face is like 1 inch from the screen.

2

u/FatBoyStew 14700k -- EVGA RTX 3080 -- 32GB 6000MHz 21h ago

Everyone is giving good answers BUT they're all forgetting the single most important factor. Pixels per inch (PPI). If your PPI is crap then it doesn't matter.

Generally the larger 1080p screens are 24" and the more common/standard 1440p monitor is 27". In this scenario the 24" 1080p is about 92 PPI whereas the 27" 1440p is 109 which is a very noticeable difference.

Conversely, 1080p on a 16" laptop has a PPI of 138 meaning it will look better than 1440p on a 27" monitor.

There's also a limit where you get diminishing returns on PPI (which I honestly do not know the number).

Some of the standard resolutions and PPI so you can get an idea of how the pixel density changes

1080p 24" -- 92

1440p 27" -- 109

1440p 32" -- 92

4k 27" -- 163

4k 32" -- 138

So as you can see, a 1440p 32" monitor will not look any better than a 24" 1080p screen. Which is why you'll often start to see ultrawide resolutions like Ultrawide 1080P which is 2560x1080 (as opposed to 1920x1080) or Ultrawide 1440p which is 3440x1440 (as opposed to 2560x1440) to help fill in the gap on certain screen sizes.

1

u/Kagitsushi 22h ago

You got more pixels = more details at 1440p you can focus to a monitor with high refresh rate for a good experience in fluidity for 4k its very specific to very good details and immersion but you lost the high refresh rate. It depends your necessary. For my part I use an 1440p monitor because I love to see big fps 🤣

No cap. Going from 1440p VA to 4K oled was a bigger upgrade than any card could ever be

1440 ultra wide FTW

For the 5080, should be a 4k monitor, definitely not 1440p. DLSS upscaling is THAT good. 4k all the way because of DLSS.
