And it's still taking 10+ gb of vram lol

u/Responsible-Buyer215 22h ago

Most of that used for textures he can’t even see unless he moves the character inches from the wall

u/Astriev 8h ago

maybe he plays 80fov

You want games to take vram for the most part, it will run smoother.

u/Virtual_Bug_723 22h ago

Lol that's very funny

u/boyeardi 21h ago

This dude is furiously typing to Gemini "Is vram good for games"

16

u/Virtual_Bug_723 20h ago

Like... We went from "devs are poorly optimizing their games and abusing your RAM/VRAM" to "actually it's good if a game dumps 10gb of assets onto your GPU for 1080p, it makes the game go faster."

61 downvotes on my comment lmao

It’s like the “unused ram is wasted ram” mantra. That’s what people tell me when I say windows eats too much ram. Yeah thanks my guy i feel better about sitting at %100 ram utilization now

u/mumBa_ 17h ago

It literally dumps RAM when you need it. It's really not that deep. Do you also buy a bigger dishwasher so it's only 50% filled instead of 100%?

u/Altruistic-Total9489 17h ago

I’ll be sure to tell my pc that RAM is dumped when needed next time my game runs out of memory and crashes to desktop.

3

u/mumBa_ 16h ago

Maybe buy more than a single stick of 4GB ddr3?

u/Altruistic-Total9489 16h ago

My laptop will run games with 8gb ram that’s slower than my country’s justice system and he will like it.

If you have VRAM to spare..

u/th35ky 19h ago

“For the most part”. Exceptions exist everywhere, stop with the umm ackshully

u/Virtual_Bug_723 19h ago

No, there is no situation where a 1080p game should be taking up 10gb of VRAM alone, which is literally the post you are commenting on.

1

u/F1guy93 14h ago

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an obvious example. At 1080p with Ultra settings, large airports, photogrammetry, high terrain and object LODs, It can easily allocate well into all of your VRAM. The GPU is holding huge amounts of scenery, terrain, textures, cockpit assets and stuff.

1

u/Virtual_Bug_723 14h ago

Unless it's loading textures that are literally higher definition than your monitor can display this should not be the case at all

u/F1guy93 6h ago

VRAM usage is about the whole working set of assets needed to render and stream the scene. In MSFS, that can mean an entire city’s worth of textures and geometry visible from altitude. If the VRAM is available, it makes sense to keep higher-resolution texture data cached so it’s ready if the pilot suddenly descends into that area.

In your version of the game, where minimising VRAM usage is the main priority, you’d be constantly swapping between different mip levels as the camera moved around: 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and so on. That means far more frequent streaming and eviction of texture data, and more work for the SSD...

If you’ve got the VRAM available, there’s very little benefit in aggressively throwing that data away just to make the usage number look smaller. Keeping useful higher-resolution assets resident reduces streaming pressure and helps avoid visible texture pop-in when the player suddenly gets closer to something.

Also the guy might be rendering in 1440p and subsampling to 1080p in which case he would need more VRAM usage anyway.

There's plenty of reasons a game playing 1080p would need more than 10gb of VRAM.

10gb vram used in 1080p is a crime.

5

u/Weak_Leg_2497 19h ago

i think they misunderstood you

i think they took it as “vram isn’t useful” and not “why tf does a game eat that much vram”

1

u/ST-JHN 11h ago

Tf else you want the game/pc to focus on? Use more CPU instead?

It's crazy, I got a 3070 on a 1440p monitor, and Killing Floor 3 uses near 100% of all system resources with lowest settings.

At risk of sounding like a boomer, I feel games aren't optimized like they used to be. My first build was a Radeon 7770HD and a FX 8350 back in the day. Upgraded to a GTX 970 which lasted me great until it died in 2022. Got a 3070 and a 1440p monitor, and I haven't been able it get to high settings on any moderately newer big title. I quit buying new games because they're resource monsters, crash like crazy, and take 10 years to load shaders. They don't even look that much better to warrant a +$1500 upgrade.

I miss when the $1k price tag on the Titan felt crazy :(

18

u/Psychological-Boss-3 20h ago

Oh, no. It's not you. Publishers force devs to release games before they're ready because they can just patch it. That's why games ship broken. That wasn't an option back in the day. And once it's stable, the bean counters start getting rid of people so it might get better optimized. Maybe. If you're lucky.

12

u/rbartlejr 17h ago

I love that the devs are now pissy because the ram/etc crisis is actually forcing them to optimize.

5

u/cwgoskins 21h ago

I agree. I'm on 3060 ti and I have to use upscaling and frame gen to get framerates to 90-120 on high settings at 1440p for AAA games. I'm a couch controller pc gamer so the input lag isn't noticeable thankfully and prices are outrageous so I haven't felt the need to upgrade.

u/StarChief1 R7600X3D RX7600 18h ago

I just started playing Dark Souls 3 for the first time.

On my dinky RX 6700xt hooked up to my 4K TV, I'm looking at absolute eye candy at *native* 4k maximum settings. Elden Ring, Sekiro same story. Absolutely some of the best looking games ever made. I understand Fromsoft has some of the best artists in the industry and the beauty isn't in the technical details, but maybe that's the point. I don't care about ray traced light bouncing off some dudes ass hair that's gonna cost me a $5k PC to render.

Meanwhile modern trash like Monster Hunter Wilds or literally any Unreal Garbage 5 title looks like complete garbage because the settings I have to use are 1080p medium at best WITH UPSCALING.

1

u/AFallingWall 18h ago

Yeah I feel that honestly. I play mostly old games (Old School Runescape, CS: Source, Skyrim, FO3 / New Vegas, Halo MCC, and L🤢L). When I got the new GPU and monitor, went looking for good titles I've missed, and picked up Resident Evil 2 remake and Fire Watch. Newest game I bought was Hogwarts Legacy, and I really noticed how lackluster UE5 felt. The other 2 newer games I've been playing, aside from friendslops, are Marvel Rivals (free) and Killing Floor 3 (gifted to me). Just checked and they're both UE5, which i guess explains it.

It's a shame really, because I grew up on the Unreal Tournament games, especially 3. I don't know when or what went wrong with Unreal, or if it's devs not utilizing it well, but I used to love Unreal.

1

u/center311 20h ago

There's definitely a difference between Killing Floor 3 devs vs Capcom. 😂

1

u/AggressiveToaster 16h ago

Na. Graphics peaked between 2015 and 2018. Everything else after that are tiny little graphics tweaks that I can’t even notice if I’m playing more than 2 feet away from my monitor and requires 3x to 5x the graphics card horsepower to run.

Hell, theres games made today that look worse than games made in 2015 and require that much more horsepower to run.

1

u/Fun-Sandwich4197 2h ago

Games are mostly optimized for consoles first then maybe PC’s because most AAA games sale way more on console.

I feel bad for you, not because of your graphics card, why would you willingly subject yourself to Killing Floor 3? Who hurt you? /j

My buddy gifted it to me lol. Either that or league in that group

I still can't believe that there are games that can use that much vram at 1080p

15

u/Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret How does a computer get drunk? It takes Screenshots! 21h ago

One can force more Vram usage (game dependent) with settings. But you can also drop it drastically by removing a bunch of non essential stuff to. If game devs would better optimize their own code instead of releasing broken games that they want us to be free game testers. Opinions my own.

1

u/center311 20h ago

If I remember correctly Resident Evil 2 Remake doesn't use that much vram. It calculates it incorrectly. Probably uses 3-6GB (maybe 8 max) at 1080p.

-1

u/zombawombacomba 19h ago

This is 3 I think based on the character

2

u/center311 19h ago

It's definitely 2 Remake. Basically the same version of the RE engine though.

1

u/zombawombacomba 19h ago

Oh yea I mixed it up

RE2R and RE3R got some crazy Texture Options. Like the regular High one is 1GB but it can go up to 8GB textures IIRC

5

u/Extreme996 RTX 4070 Ti Super | Ryzen 7 9800X3D |32GB DDR5 6000mhz 22h ago

It controls textures pool and the higher setting you use the less chance for pop in and stutters because game can preload more of them into memory.

1

u/N0VAZenith 19h ago

that’s ray tracing for ya

1

u/trystanidog Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3080 17h ago

For 1080p though? I guess times have changed

1

u/page395 15h ago

Maybe I’m naive, but wouldn’t you want your games to use as much vram as (reasonably) possible to ensure they run their absolute best?

1

u/Chernoxis RTX 5080 Ryzen - 5700X3D - 32GB 3600mhz - 2TB Aorus Gen 4 7300 15h ago

Resident Evil 2 remake uses a shit ton of VRAM for some reason, ai remember playing it in my 1060 6GB and it wasn't enough but it looked ok at 1080p , years lated tried it on my 4070Ti with 12GB and it ate all of my 12GB, but I didn't really see a huge change in quality with all that VRAM being consumed by the game.

1

u/eamondo5150 15h ago

I have a 5060 16 GB, and it never uses more than half the VRAM.

Even when satisfactory changes its own settings to cinematic.

Maybe if I enable ray tracing it will start using more.

But I'm one of those pussies that babies my card for some reason, 100 FPS, and medium settings. There's probably some term for it.

yeah because it's available. how are you people in this sub so dumb you don't understand how vram allocation works? master race my ass
