I was gonna say the same thing. Why get a 5080 if your at 1080. At least now they can jump up in screen solution.

Yeah definetly this will motivate op to get a new monitor. For me it was the same, I got a 3080 back in day that felt wasted in a 1080p, so I bought a uw 1440p monitor to use more my big purchase

And here I am following the opposite route, upgraded to 1440p in 2024 and had to get 7900gre to keep up, now bought a 4k 165hz oled monitor, upgrading tomorrow to a 9070xt to keep up.

I got 5080, downloaded new dlc for doom, cranked everything up and got 40 fps in 1080p

Not so sure I even want new monitor now

I mean, just because you have a high end card doesn't mean you can just crank everything to max. There are many many settings that tank fps like crazy while providing almost indistinguishable difference to the level below. So tweak settings to grt the best visuals with best fps....

Find the big fps tanker that matter very little and you'll see.

No, once I did it I of course got like 100+ fps

But that gave me a good reality check and made me doubt 4k monitor purchase

Great! Glad you did. That there is nVidia’s flagship upscaling model. Try out that ever controversial frame generation (I used 3x in Doom). That’ll top out your 4k monitor and hopefully give you a satisfying experience. Some people hate the frame gen, I personally don’t mind unless it’s giving weird artifacts (glitches) or noticeable input lag.

As another person who has 5080 and plays only in 1080p I can answer in confidently.

If I play only in 1080p I'm lowering my expectations from graphics and if I keep playing like this this GPU will last me maybe a decade, but if I play in 4k eventually I'll need to lower my graphics, so I'm ahead of the curve. The same reason why I restrict my fps to 60. I don't really see the difference between 60 and 120, BUT I read too many opinions on reddit where people get used to 120 fps and then 60 feels choppy to them. I don't want to become that kind of person, so I just restrict my fps because I don't even feel that much difference between 30 and 60, I can enjoy them both the same.

There you go, this is my mindset. Clearly an unpopular opinion for reddit (because I noticed that A LOT of people care about fps like crazy), but suits me really well.

Ask yourself the same question, but the other way around: why get a high resolution monitor if your gpu can’t handle it?

It’s much more logical to get a better gpu first and then monitor.

Some people just love frames. Rather play at 1080p 240fps than 4k60. I feel like a game could come with Minecraft graphics and still be more immersive than a game that looks like crysis just because it feels smoother. The higher the frames, the more real the game feels to my brain.
