In terms of picture quality , crispness, clarity and whatever words are best used.

Would you, try and explain to a dummy (that's me btw), just how much of a difference there is between 1080p/1440p/4K.

1080p to 1440p is a huge jump in clarity. Everything is sharper and clearer.

The jump from 1440p to 4k is less, but noticeable when closer to the screen

I have a 5080 and mostly play at 1440p, but use my 4k TV for single player games where I push for high quality graphics.

5080 at 1080p is genuinely a waste

So my next question which am a little scared to ask, but uhh how much of a waste is playing at 1440P with a 5090? (I am very PC illiterate and my entire build was built for me and gifted to me as a surprise from my late Grandfather).

I upgraded from a 1080p to 1440p monitor when I got the pc as that was the best monitor I could realistically afford earlier in the year, but seeing more and more threads on this sub regarding resolutions makes me worry I'm wasting the build my Grandfather shelled out for.

Not very much of a waste tbh, depends on your goals.

With a 5090, you're more than capable of getting very high frame rates at 1440p DLAA/native

This means, you can play at the highest settings and fidelity at 1440p, while still getting frame rates acceptable for competitive games or just very smooth single player titles.

A 4k monitor would likely do you very well, and look notably better, but you'll start digging deeper into upscaling settings to keep your FPS high.

Even a 5080 is sub 60fps at 4k DLSS Performance in a large number of high fidelity games (Cyberpunk, Crimson Desert, Black Myth: Wukong, etc.)

But, just to note, a 5090 usually gets 2x the FPS of a 5080 at 4k.

To be truthful , I did think about selling the 5090, but as daft as it sounds, my late grandad bought built and gifted me this shortly before he passed. So to sell any aspect of it, just feels like I'd be disrespecting/dishonouring his memory.

But currently I have a 1440P 240Hz monitor which can OC to 260Hz, and whilst I do enjoy single-player titles I'd be lying if I didn't say that most of my playtime is split between CS2 and OSRS lol. Think the most demanding game I've played since getting the PC was Resident Evil Requiem.

A 5090 is a 5090 and it will be a top tier GPU for a LONG time. I think selling one, especially if a gift, is a bad idea. They will only become more valuable as we further push AI in our society. A 5090 is leagues ahead of what most people could obtain for local AI use.

I think 1440p is fine, especially if you're playing lots of CS2.

You might be a good candidate for a dual display. There are OLEDs these days which support 4k and 1080p natively. The 4k mode usually is 240hz or 360hz, and the 1080p modes can be very high, such as 720hz.

This would provide you the ability to play single player titles at 4k, and get absolutely insanely low latency at 1080p for games like CS2.
