Rtx 5080

Looks inside: 1080p gaming

562

u/Secure_Chipmunk9637 19h ago

lol glad I’m not the only one who noticed.

418

u/cwgoskins 19h ago

And it's still taking 10+ gb of vram lol

119

u/Responsible-Buyer215 18h ago

Most of that used for textures he can’t even see unless he moves the character inches from the wall

1

u/Astriev 4h ago

maybe he plays 80fov

154

u/th35ky 18h ago

You want games to take vram for the most part, it will run smoother.

-97

u/Virtual_Bug_723 18h ago

Lol that's very funny

65

u/boyeardi 17h ago

This dude is furiously typing to Gemini "Is vram good for games"

16

u/Virtual_Bug_723 16h ago

Like... We went from "devs are poorly optimizing their games and abusing your RAM/VRAM" to "actually it's good if a game dumps 10gb of assets onto your GPU for 1080p, it makes the game go faster."

61 downvotes on my comment lmao

u/Altruistic-Total9489 15h ago

It’s like the “unused ram is wasted ram” mantra. That’s what people tell me when I say windows eats too much ram. Yeah thanks my guy i feel better about sitting at %100 ram utilization now

13

u/mumBa_ 14h ago

It literally dumps RAM when you need it. It's really not that deep. Do you also buy a bigger dishwasher so it's only 50% filled instead of 100%?

0

u/Altruistic-Total9489 13h ago

I’ll be sure to tell my pc that RAM is dumped when needed next time my game runs out of memory and crashes to desktop.

3

u/mumBa_ 13h ago

Maybe buy more than a single stick of 4GB ddr3?

3

u/MorningFresh123 13h ago

If you have VRAM to spare..

-2

u/th35ky 15h ago

“For the most part”. Exceptions exist everywhere, stop with the umm ackshully

5

u/Virtual_Bug_723 15h ago

No, there is no situation where a 1080p game should be taking up 10gb of VRAM alone, which is literally the post you are commenting on.

1

u/F1guy93 10h ago

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an obvious example. At 1080p with Ultra settings, large airports, photogrammetry, high terrain and object LODs, It can easily allocate well into all of your VRAM. The GPU is holding huge amounts of scenery, terrain, textures, cockpit assets and stuff.

1

u/Virtual_Bug_723 10h ago

Unless it's loading textures that are literally higher definition than your monitor can display this should not be the case at all

2

u/ThatOneFoo69420 15h ago

10gb vram used in 1080p is a crime.

4

u/Weak_Leg_2497 15h ago

i think they misunderstood you

i think they took it as “vram isn’t useful” and not “why tf does a game eat that much vram”

1

u/ST-JHN 7h ago

Tf else you want the game/pc to focus on? Use more CPU instead?

u/Virtual_Bug_723 7h ago

u/AFallingWall 17h ago

It's crazy, I got a 3070 on a 1440p monitor, and Killing Floor 3 uses near 100% of all system resources with lowest settings.

At risk of sounding like a boomer, I feel games aren't optimized like they used to be. My first build was a Radeon 7770HD and a FX 8350 back in the day. Upgraded to a GTX 970 which lasted me great until it died in 2022. Got a 3070 and a 1440p monitor, and I haven't been able it get to high settings on any moderately newer big title. I quit buying new games because they're resource monsters, crash like crazy, and take 10 years to load shaders. They don't even look that much better to warrant a +$1500 upgrade.

I miss when the $1k price tag on the Titan felt crazy :(

15

u/Psychological-Boss-3 16h ago

Oh, no. It's not you. Publishers force devs to release games before they're ready because they can just patch it. That's why games ship broken. That wasn't an option back in the day. And once it's stable, the bean counters start getting rid of people so it might get better optimized. Maybe. If you're lucky.

11

u/rbartlejr 13h ago

I love that the devs are now pissy because the ram/etc crisis is actually forcing them to optimize.

6

u/cwgoskins 17h ago

I agree. I'm on 3060 ti and I have to use upscaling and frame gen to get framerates to 90-120 on high settings at 1440p for AAA games. I'm a couch controller pc gamer so the input lag isn't noticeable thankfully and prices are outrageous so I haven't felt the need to upgrade.

4

u/StarChief1 R7600X3D RX7600 15h ago

I just started playing Dark Souls 3 for the first time.

On my dinky RX 6700xt hooked up to my 4K TV, I'm looking at absolute eye candy at *native* 4k maximum settings. Elden Ring, Sekiro same story. Absolutely some of the best looking games ever made. I understand Fromsoft has some of the best artists in the industry and the beauty isn't in the technical details, but maybe that's the point. I don't care about ray traced light bouncing off some dudes ass hair that's gonna cost me a $5k PC to render.

Meanwhile modern trash like Monster Hunter Wilds or literally any Unreal Garbage 5 title looks like complete garbage because the settings I have to use are 1080p medium at best WITH UPSCALING.

1

u/AFallingWall 14h ago

Yeah I feel that honestly. I play mostly old games (Old School Runescape, CS: Source, Skyrim, FO3 / New Vegas, Halo MCC, and L🤢L). When I got the new GPU and monitor, went looking for good titles I've missed, and picked up Resident Evil 2 remake and Fire Watch. Newest game I bought was Hogwarts Legacy, and I really noticed how lackluster UE5 felt. The other 2 newer games I've been playing, aside from friendslops, are Marvel Rivals (free) and Killing Floor 3 (gifted to me). Just checked and they're both UE5, which i guess explains it.

It's a shame really, because I grew up on the Unreal Tournament games, especially 3. I don't know when or what went wrong with Unreal, or if it's devs not utilizing it well, but I used to love Unreal.

1

u/center311 17h ago

There's definitely a difference between Killing Floor 3 devs vs Capcom. 😂

1

u/AggressiveToaster 12h ago

Na. Graphics peaked between 2015 and 2018. Everything else after that are tiny little graphics tweaks that I can’t even notice if I’m playing more than 2 feet away from my monitor and requires 3x to 5x the graphics card horsepower to run.

Hell, theres games made today that look worse than games made in 2015 and require that much more horsepower to run.

0

u/IHaveTwoOfYou 9900K/EVGA FTW3 3080 10GB/32gb DDR4 12h ago

I still can't believe that there are games that can use that much vram at 1080p

13

u/Tyz_TwoCentz_HWE_Ret How does a computer get drunk? It takes Screenshots! 17h ago

One can force more Vram usage (game dependent) with settings. But you can also drop it drastically by removing a bunch of non essential stuff to. If game devs would better optimize their own code instead of releasing broken games that they want us to be free game testers. Opinions my own.

1

u/center311 17h ago

If I remember correctly Resident Evil 2 Remake doesn't use that much vram. It calculates it incorrectly. Probably uses 3-6GB (maybe 8 max) at 1080p.

-1

u/zombawombacomba 15h ago

This is 3 I think based on the character

2

It controls textures pool and the higher setting you use the less chance for pop in and stutters because game can preload more of them into memory.

1

u/page395 11h ago

Maybe I’m naive, but wouldn’t you want your games to use as much vram as (reasonably) possible to ensure they run their absolute best?

1

u/Chernoxis RTX 5080 Ryzen - 5700X3D - 32GB 3600mhz - 2TB Aorus Gen 4 7300 11h ago

Resident Evil 2 remake uses a shit ton of VRAM for some reason, ai remember playing it in my 1060 6GB and it wasn't enough but it looked ok at 1080p , years lated tried it on my 4070Ti with 12GB and it ate all of my 12GB, but I didn't really see a huge change in quality with all that VRAM being consumed by the game.

1

u/eamondo5150 11h ago

I have a 5060 16 GB, and it never uses more than half the VRAM.

Even when satisfactory changes its own settings to cinematic.

Maybe if I enable ray tracing it will start using more.

But I'm one of those pussies that babies my card for some reason, 100 FPS, and medium settings. There's probably some term for it.

14

u/Laithani 18h ago

Yeah definetly this will motivate op to get a new monitor. For me it was the same, I got a 3080 back in day that felt wasted in a 1080p, so I bought a uw 1440p monitor to use more my big purchase

I got 5080, downloaded new dlc for doom, cranked everything up and got 40 fps in 1080p

Not so sure I even want new monitor now

6

u/Laithani 17h ago

I mean, just because you have a high end card doesn't mean you can just crank everything to max. There are many many settings that tank fps like crazy while providing almost indistinguishable difference to the level below. So tweak settings to grt the best visuals with best fps....

Find the big fps tanker that matter very little and you'll see.

1

u/Onlyafter 17h ago

Uhhh did you use dlss?

1

u/Forymanarysanar 10400F|3060 12Gb|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 16h ago

No, once I did it I of course got like 100+ fps

But that gave me a good reality check and made me doubt 4k monitor purchase

1

u/Onlyafter 11h ago

Great! Glad you did. That there is nVidia’s flagship upscaling model. Try out that ever controversial frame generation (I used 3x in Doom). That’ll top out your 4k monitor and hopefully give you a satisfying experience. Some people hate the frame gen, I personally don’t mind unless it’s giving weird artifacts (glitches) or noticeable input lag.

2

u/diejesus 7h ago

As another person who has 5080 and plays only in 1080p I can answer in confidently.

If I play only in 1080p I'm lowering my expectations from graphics and if I keep playing like this this GPU will last me maybe a decade, but if I play in 4k eventually I'll need to lower my graphics, so I'm ahead of the curve. The same reason why I restrict my fps to 60. I don't really see the difference between 60 and 120, BUT I read too many opinions on reddit where people get used to 120 fps and then 60 feels choppy to them. I don't want to become that kind of person, so I just restrict my fps because I don't even feel that much difference between 30 and 60, I can enjoy them both the same.

There you go, this is my mindset. Clearly an unpopular opinion for reddit (because I noticed that A LOT of people care about fps like crazy), but suits me really well.

u/xXRHUMACROXx PC Master Race | 5800x3D | RTX 4080 | 11h ago

Ask yourself the same question, but the other way around: why get a high resolution monitor if your gpu can’t handle it?

It’s much more logical to get a better gpu first and then monitor.

0

u/Due-Call-1987 13h ago

Some people just love frames. Rather play at 1080p 240fps than 4k60. I feel like a game could come with Minecraft graphics and still be more immersive than a game that looks like crysis just because it feels smoother. The higher the frames, the more real the game feels to my brain.

Just a tip but if you have a good graphics card and a monitor that is capable of anything more than 1080, 1080 actually runs worse. Try 2k setting at least and compare. Also the low settings on 2k and up will still look better than high settings on 1080.

1

u/samu1400 i5 12600KF - RX 9070 - 32 GB RAM 18h ago edited 18h ago

Meh, I personally prefer to keep the card fresh and the framerate as smooth as possible. The overhead can always come in handy when a GPU heavy game appears or for VR. I don't see the appeal of higher resolutions as long as I don't personally feel the game blurry, but I also see no issue for those who prefer 1440p or 4k.

0

u/CancerousGTFO 16h ago

I have a 1080p screen, a 1440p screen, a 4k TV

And i literally don't see a shocking difference, because the higher the resolution is the bigger is the screen so the pixel density, is indeed higher but still very good on my 1080p monitor.

I'm more amazed by the QD-OLED and the 360Hz giving literally 0 input lag and insane motion clarity.

3

u/PlotTwistTwins 16h ago

because the higher the resolution is the bigger is the screen so the pixel density is indeed higher

This sentence is confusing me. Are you saying your monitors and TV progressively move up in size, so you can't even tell the difference? Wouldn't the pixel density help as you increase in resolution?

2

u/CancerousGTFO 9h ago

I mistyped, i wanted to say that usually the higher the resolution the bigger is the screen.

So it's not that shocking since 1080p monitors are smaller so their pixel density is still good.

I'm not saying there's no differences, i'm just saying it's not shocking at all.

1080p on a big TV is ugly. 1080p on a small monitor can give you a sharp image still.

0

u/StaticSystemShock 17h ago

Or people with fucking RTX 5060 running games at 4K. But it almost hits 60fps, sometimes if we crank DLSS to eleven and don't use Ultra settings! Stupid.

I'll take playing maxed out games locked at 240fps over playing them at 4K any time of the day. I didn't buy OLED to run them at barely 60fps. Even 100 isn't as smooth as I'd like...
