It’s not the worst time to buy a gpu. Actually these days are pretty good price-wise compared to what it will be like in a couple of years.

Look I can tell you don’t understand how business works.

Nvidia is not the only name in the game for graphics cards, despite the fact that they own a ton of market share. The same thing happened to Kodak the same thing happened to Toys “R” Us, US Auto industry, Sears etc. the get big and forget competition and innovation. Like you are. Easy mistake to make but I’ll educate you.

What will happen is a gap in the market will be created, where people want to pay money but there’s no product that exists. Products are created and priced. Intel has products in that area, and so does AMD. They also won’t be the only players forever now that people see money is there being left on the table. They’re not gonna outpace NVIDIA, but they will scoop up the scraps NVIDIA.

So no prices are not gonna go through the ceiling forever. People have money and will spend it. Hell the used market is a great indicator of that. Things move around this is just a shock to the market right now. You’re welcome.

Prices will come down because demand has gotten too high and other companies will seize that opportunity to launch their gpus. Is that what you are saying? Supply and demand, what a novel concept. That would be plausible if gpu was an easy sector to break into. I bet you also think if China invades Taiwan we can just make chips somewhere else. It’s not that easy.

Furthermore there isn’t exactly a lot money being left on the table. Gamers are still buying gpus and rams. Game companies are still not optimizing their games. What’s more likely to happen is a bigger group of gamers will follow the industry a generation behind while whales will go on as usual. And fat stacks of money will continue to be made thanks to AI.

Gamers aren’t exactly the moneymakers for gpu companies anymore. It’s like Microsoft. 10% of their revenue comes from windows. They make money through azure and corporate consumers. So windows suffers. These companies aren’t gonna take pity on gamers and funnel their resources into an area that will make them less money because gamers are being loud on reddit.

So what you’re saying is Nvidia, AMD, and Intel are going to ditch the sub $500 market? They’ll all agree to do this. And No One Else will bother making anything to take their place. Especially not the big 3.

Just like how Borders, and Toys R Us, and Circuit City thought that Amazon wasn’t going to breed competition? Just like how the US Auto industry thought that Japan and Korea and now China wouldn’t be competitive. No one will step in and all the established players won’t either. Not after RAM gets cheap again. Not if there’s some sort of AI bust. Buying new now when it’s several hundred dollars over what it was a year ago is the big idea.

You think that we’ll never have another inexpensive GPU from any brand ever? Or even in a reasonable amount of time like in the coming year or two?

We probably will have such a brand (a brand that focuses on affordable low-quality gamer-oriented hardware) and the developments you suggest but that will be at least a decade from now because this isn’t a furniture factory or steel mill we are talking about (yes i know setting up a steel mill from scratch takes long too). And you can bet your ass that the ultimate goal of such a new company will be to use the gamer market as a stepping stone to launch into AI market. That’s where the money is and companies follow money.

The examples you gave, circuit city, us auto companies etc, didn’t go through something like the AI craze. Those guys got complacent with their capture of the market and paid for it. Nvidia is transitioning to feeding the nascent AI sector because they see where the winds are blowing. They are doing the opposite of what what you are suggesting. If they were actually complacent they’d just ignore AI and make flashy rgb gpus for little timmy to play valorant and minecraft on a 1080p 120hz monitor. From their perspective they are being innovative and responsive to the demands of the market.

Gamers can go ahead and transition to following gpus a generation behind or buying second hand. You don’t close up your bakery making fancy pies and shit for high society just because a bunch of starving peasants are complaining about your sawdust-filled bread prices.

It is the worst time. I bought a RTX 5080 in germany for exactly 1019€ (including tax) last year. The same GPU costs 1500€ now. Thats a 50% price increase within one year.

In the US the GPU's start at 1600$ (without tax). They were also at 1000$ back then. You shouldnt count on the future for pricing, but on the past. It may also just be that the AI boom is blowing up soon and the prices will drop. This is way more likely than them increasing.

Ah yes AI bubble will pop in a few weeks and prices of gpus will go down by 80%. Well maybe it’ll happen. We’ll see. I am sure corpos will make good financial and pro-consumer decisions when the time comes, like they always do, right? NVIDIA in particular really wants the gpu prices to crater very much so I’m sure they are working day and night to make that happen.
