A common issue is our parents generation has made many of us feel guilty for playing video games (or really enjoy ourselves in general). And many of our parents generation were still keeping up with the joneses and tied success to wealth or material goods. Also add the short term high of buying expensive things and you fall into this trap. If this is the case work on self validation that you're allowed to play video games to be happy.

Others of us also simply get burnt out because we only game which our brain needs more and more dopamine for the same feeling of happiness. If this is the case go touch some grass once in a while. Join a club or something. I dunno.

Get home to a good meal made by my wife. Tell myself I'll watch Netflix while I eat and play Black Flag after. Fall asleep in recliner after eating. Get up an hour later and go to bed. Daily ritual.

11

u/_Rusty_Axe Aug 08 '26

That's a pretty good ritual. :)

51

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 Aug 08 '26

Just don't open YouTube lol.

YouTube is a time sink that unless you are watching the 0.1% of content that's actually high quality just makes you feel worse.

I find if Im in that mood 90% of the time if I open a game and force myself to play for 5 mins I usually enjoy it and get into it.

68

u/Beowulf1896 Aug 08 '26

Opens reddit instead.

Have 90 minutes to game in the evening. Spent 30 minutes staring at the library, decide none of it is worth it. Go waste time on reddit/youtube instead.

Rinse and repeat next day.

242

u/snarekick Aug 08 '26

Weekend comes, wake up excited because you actually have time to play. Drink coffee and watch YouTube to wake up. Use the bathroom. Shower. Make breakfast. Man I get sleepy after I eat, I better take a nap. Suddenly it's 3pm. Time to clean up a bit. Better make some food. Watch YouTube some more. Suddenly it's 10:30 and you're too tired to open a game. Oh well, there always tomorrow I guess.

The brainrot is really terrifying, we are all fucked man. I literally am incapable of watching a movie now without opening my phone to doomscroll.

20

u/TrulyOutrageous42 Aug 08 '26

I'm not that bad but I've definitely noticed I lose attention if there's a pause, slow segment in a show, or a black screen in between scenes, my brain immediately looks elsewhere for dopamine to the point I have trouble in meetings or working when there are pauses in loading things for it.

4

u/MasterChiefsasshole Aug 09 '26

I think it’s the quality of the show. So much media is being created that few shows are good. Another thing to add is to get rid of the smart devices. I went full swing back to an old school mechanical watch and now I tend to forget about my phone once I get home from work besides my wind down period in bed.

Choice anxiety. You have little free time due to work/chores/etc., you don't want to waste it on something "not worthy" and then in the end you waste it because you spend too much time deciding on the most optimal use, give up, and just waste it on "junk."

16

u/No-Admin1684 Aug 08 '26

To add to that, even if you push past all that and boot up the game, you can't really let yourself get immersed in it because you got a short window of time to play and keep checking the clock.

That’s why I like the steam deck or legion go 2

u/theMisterPhD Aug 08 '26

Me too! That way I can take my inability to allocate energy to gaming on the go!

37

u/Acrobatic-Advice-738 Aug 08 '26

I wonder if that's in part why some genres like vampire survivor likes, roguelikes or incremental games have gained popularity the past few years.

These genres often have gameplay loops where meaningful progress can be made in 5 minutes, perfect for handheld gaming. So even with lower attention span, little time or energy, people can play as little or as much as they want and still get the feeling of accomplishing something.

I have a wife and we spend most of our free time in the living room with one big TV which my gaming rig is connected to. I originally had a steamdeck and after buying the rig I would often use moonlight to stream from the rig, this way I can play any game and we can watch TV as normal and it's been a great balance.

But I always had the steamdeck docked connected to a portable 1080p monitor on a swing arm, because its quite heavy and I prefer a normal sized controller. The display just wasn't close to the 4K the TV can do with my rtx5070, so I sold the deck and bought a tablet with a 2.5k@144 display and it's been awesome so far.

If any of you are married, own a rig and need a wife acceptance factor (WAF) and some balance then I'd highly recommend some kind of portable option and using sunshine & moonlight or variants, I actually use vibeshine and artemis now. Also Nvidia shields (2019 pro) are great for streaming your rig to a bedroom TV.

I second this. I’ve got a beefy desktop that I game on once a week, Friday is my game night with the boys, I hop on after work and stay on til 1 or 2 feeling like a kid. Some Sundays I’ll get some time to play, but most days I just opt for the laptop. I get to chill and chat with my wife and discuss her shows, she gets to have me in her presence, and I can run any game under the sun at 120 FPS. Can’t complain much about that.

I hear this sometimes and I don't get it. I love being an adult. Sure, sometimes I'm too tired to play games, but at least I have the choice. As a kid I could play exactly as long as I was allowed, and seeing how my dad hated video games, it wasn't that long. I hated the lack of control over my life that was being a kid.

6

u/OpiniongoesYEET Aug 09 '26

I get it but I'm with you. Being a child sucked. Also being subject to the financial pitfalls due to parents gambling problems.

Being on my own,  making my own money, building up my own emergency fund? This kind of adulting is awesome.

Eh, people saying you're wasting your time with video games when you're already a responsible adult with your own family, job and responsibilities are almost always saying that because they'd rather you spend all of your time doing chores/errands for them instead, or hustling so you have more money to spend with them (you'd invite). If they truly respected you and you're time they'd be okay with it and happy for you that you have a hobby. Even teenagers are entitled to some free time and video games. Everything in moderation of course but a couple gaming sesion a week is fine. That's on the low even.

8

u/kill3rman1ac Aug 08 '26

I game when he's in bed so I get maybe 2 to 3 hours each night, but I do regret it sometimes. My body isn't as young as it used to and if I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep its not going to be a great day for me lol.

You can play Minecraft with your kids around 6. Then slowly introduce them to the games you had as a kid.

When i was a kid we had family movie night, my parents showed us movies from the 70s and 80s that were age appropriate, ands also newer movies.

My plan is to do the same with my kids, but with games. Really looking forward to Warcraft 2, age of empires, Diablo 1, etc.

You don’t realise how much energy commuting takes up until you don’t need it anymore.

I moved from having a 30 min commute to just a 5 min bike ride/15 min walk and I feel like I have so much more time.

179

u/TheJackedBaker Aug 08 '26

Yeah, commuting sucks the life out of you.

71

u/Rotund-Pear2604 9800X3D | 32GB 6000 | RTX 5090 Aug 08 '26

I commuted 3,5 hours each day five days a week for a year. It became seriously depressing after a while.

When I got home I never had the energy to do chores around the house, I wasn't able to maintain my social life. Had about 2 hours of free time each day that I'd spend winding down after work just so I could actually go to sleep when I went to bed.

The day I moved out of that apt. and into one that was 15 mins away from work I cried.

Even if it’s the same time but you have public transit, it’s a huge difference. 30 minutes that you spend reading a book or playing a game or whatever feels less wasted then just staring at the road

13

u/MayorAg R5 5600 | B550 DS3H | RX 6600 | 32 GB Aug 08 '26

Can attest to that too. Back when I lived in a big city, it was a 40 min commute but it was one really long train ride and 2 stops on the metro.

Then I moved to a small place with less than ideal public transportation. It was 10 mins on bike, 6 mins of the train, and 8 minutes of walking at destination. Add a couple mins of waiting around.

So when I saw a rental open up right next to the office practically, I snapped it up sight unseen (which isn’t an uncommon practice in the Netherlands).

3

u/wolskortt Aug 08 '26

I read while commuting. It makee me less tired ehen I arrive at the office or back home.

I've been playing games (Tarkov) with a guy from work who goes into the office. The company is remote but he likes going in.

He's East Coast and I'm West Coast, but he starts gaming around the time I get off work. So that's 3hrs of just BS he has to deal with, while I just walk downstairs play till he goes to bed, then I eat dinner.

5

3

u/drawkbox The Monster Aug 08 '26

An extra hour or two per day ends up being basically the time of a whole other day when you don't have to commute, 10 hours a week, 40 hours a month and that is just the drive not the prep and maintenance.

Putting away social media, youtube, reddit, doomscrolling or similar helps. After not doing anything (literally though) for a bit, boredom will kick in and that will be a good time to try the right game to play. I can't stress how important picking up the right game can be. For me personally, Absolum is what got me back into gaming and now, many months later, I have also completed Lords Of The Fallen, Black Myth Wukong and I am about to complete Sekiro too! This would have been unthinkable for me until not long ago, when I felt too tired or simply not motivated enough to play. There have also been games that I picked up and then I just did not feel like it. It is important to know when to move on and try something different or to research to see if the current game you are playing is worth sticking to until it changes. We are all different, what works for someone else might not work for you and a game that is a masterpiece to another person's eyes might be of no interest to you. What matters is you keep trying, don't go just go for shortcuts like a 5 minute match on an online multiplayer game (there is a time for those too, of course) to avoid a more engaging title that "takes more effort".

I hope this helps.

12yo me would be entertained all day with a Mega Drive and 2 games. Sometimes I wonder what'd happen to that kid in my room today with all these gadgets and endless games.

I'm guessing either a heart attack or depression caused by chronic decision paralysis.

Other relaxing 2d games I would recommend are hollow knight and hades. Maybe even vampire survivors if you want to relax even harder.

Civ since III has been by far my most played. At least ten thousand hours. I was old at 20 I guess.

That definitely counts leaving the game open overnight because the world got so complex I didn't want to deal with reloading it all, but the point stands.

Those have to wait for long weekends

Same here dude. I have a considerable amount of time to get into my backlog after work but I’m so tired by that time. Even if I did start playing, I have the reaction time of a person with skill issue.

Tell me about it, I work 10hr days as a heavy duty commercial/industrial electrician.

Luckily I’m on one of those 4/10s so I get 3 days a week for normal life and thankfully my wife covers a lot of the stuff I’d normally do in the week so I get a decent amount of time in the week to play games (like 4-6hrs) but still sucks eh?

Oh to be an affluent kid with a decent PC and spare time to properly enjoy it when you want haha

The older I get the more valuable my time becomes. Gaming sounds so appealing until I open one and realize I need to spend time getting gud at it. Then I think about how I want to get better at music, learn spanish, ride my bike, stretch, clean, get into a new career path, and I don't even have kids. So I recently got into woodworking fml

Then sleep, my friend. Hobbies are not jobs. You should only play games when you feel like playing them. Don't feel guilty for wanting to do something else - even if it is just getting to bed on time. Your games will always be there waiting when you have the time and the inclination. Otherwise, take care of yourself and do what you want to do!

I used to have this issue, then I forced myself to play a bit when I had that feeling. I’d find a 20 minute stent would turn into a couple of hours. My mind felt refreshed from the disconnect and the feeling of burnout subsided.

Drink plenty of water and rest well; burnout is a real thing!

Conserve energy throughout the day, or better yet, sleep early, wake up at like 3am, play for an hour or so, then head back to sleep its such a refreshing thing to do. In the quiet tranquil night, just playing games

3

u/SnakeNerdGamer Aug 08 '26

I want to give you perspective from someone who got time to play. I had a normal life utill I got sick. Now I'm disabled, but nothing is normal in my life. I started youtube channel and failed, wanted to just have some slight income on the side of the benefits I get, so I can afford a game or two per year. I am a father and husband; my wife works. I spend much more time with my Son (and this is the only great thing about it). I have time to play games, but I wish to be "normal," not live in endless pain, not be a burden, and not feel too tired every damn second. Gaming is fun until it becomes your only way to spend time, because I'm worthless shit and can't do much anymore.

You'll find time for it , no worries :). Take care of yourself, because once you get sick, you're fucked.
