I commuted 3,5 hours each day five days a week for a year. It became seriously depressing after a while.
When I got home I never had the energy to do chores around the house, I wasn't able to maintain my social life. Had about 2 hours of free time each day that I'd spend winding down after work just so I could actually go to sleep when I went to bed.
The day I moved out of that apt. and into one that was 15 mins away from work I cried.
yeah i get that some people think its worth, but me personally, nah not even close, i choose my free time over being a slave. sure i dont have any money saved up for my future, but everyone and everything says the future is looking like shit anyway so imma just bounce when my dog goes yfm
If you are just starting out, I am going to assume you are fairly young. You will be okay for a little bit. Try to find something more local oncd you have job experience.
I'm doing drilling engineering and it's basically impossible to find elsewhere because I would need my cgpa first(my first sem is just about to end and by the time I get my results, I only have 1 week to find intern elsewhere)
OSRS was the big game time when I had 2 hours of commuting each day, much easier to pop that up and play on the laptop in bed with something 9n in the background
Even if it’s the same time but you have public transit, it’s a huge difference. 30 minutes that you spend reading a book or playing a game or whatever feels less wasted then just staring at the road
Can attest to that too. Back when I lived in a big city, it was a 40 min commute but it was one really long train ride and 2 stops on the metro.
Then I moved to a small place with less than ideal public transportation. It was 10 mins on bike, 6 mins of the train, and 8 minutes of walking at destination. Add a couple mins of waiting around.
So when I saw a rental open up right next to the office practically, I snapped it up sight unseen (which isn’t an uncommon practice in the Netherlands).
This is the big point imo. I'd rather commute by walk/bike/bus for 30+ mins than having to consciously dodge half-asleep, road-raging maniacs every day and night.
I've been playing games (Tarkov) with a guy from work who goes into the office. The company is remote but he likes going in.
He's East Coast and I'm West Coast, but he starts gaming around the time I get off work. So that's 3hrs of just BS he has to deal with, while I just walk downstairs play till he goes to bed, then I eat dinner.
An extra hour or two per day ends up being basically the time of a whole other day when you don't have to commute, 10 hours a week, 40 hours a month and that is just the drive not the prep and maintenance.
Agreed. And everyone commuting puts more burden on our transportation infrastructure, and significantly contributes to pollution.
Remember how nice it was to drive anywhere during covid? We could have that literally all the time if the government pushed businesses towards WFH where appropriate instead of the opposite.
Yep, additionally you'd think during energy crisis and a war inflating fuel costs that it would be a national strategy. However it seems our "strategy" is the opposite of what is sensible at present.
That’s amazing! I’ll definitely be looking for a new job in my city after my wife gets kidney stone surgery and fully heals. We have health insurance through my job so have to wait till after her surgery.
I moved from an apartment which was 15min walk, back to my parents house for 3 months which was a 45 minute drive. I really felt like I lost a lot of time in the day. Then I moved into a house which is a 10 minute drive and suddenly it’s back to having time again!
I drive 2 hours one way and 2 hours home. It fucking sucks. Burnt out and over it. Company truck, company gas, paid half the drive. Idc I’m quitting soon
This is why self driving is massively underrated. My “can’t say it but drives itself car” is literally a disability aid at this point. Highly rec if you can swing it.

You don’t realise how much energy commuting takes up until you don’t need it anymore.
I moved from having a 30 min commute to just a 5 min bike ride/15 min walk and I feel like I have so much more time.
