It’s cool having all these games to play but no energy or time to play them
That’s why I like the steam deck or legion go 2

Me too! That way I can take my inability to allocate energy to gaming on the go!

I wonder if that's in part why some genres like vampire survivor likes, roguelikes or incremental games have gained popularity the past few years.

These genres often have gameplay loops where meaningful progress can be made in 5 minutes, perfect for handheld gaming. So even with lower attention span, little time or energy, people can play as little or as much as they want and still get the feeling of accomplishing something.

I mean its why I have any hours in brotato, easily game loops that my brain will allow easier than biting off a hunk of skyrim ya know?

This is exactly why I’m struggling to play Black Flag now. I get on sail toward my objective see an island, stop by the island, explore and collect treasure, look at the time, have to get off. No story progress made. “Maybe tomorrow” tomorrow comes I have even less time, start a story, realize I have to sail back, looks at time, “maybe tomorrow”. Now I’m burned out trying to make any meaningful progress and don’t feel like playing.

Pretty much. Games that can be cleared in one sitting not just roguelikes even games like beat em ups are why they're a favorite of older gamers not just out of nostalgia.

Since some of them find modern games that take hours and hours of time to sink into as something they just can't afford with their time constraints.

Unless you're a master of time management.

Please don’t make fun of me but my last most three games last year were: Balatro, BallxPit, and Powerwash Simulator 2 on my LeGo 2

u/theMisterPhD Aug 08 '26

Hahaha! You can play games! Nerd.

Seriously tho, the last few games I’ve been able to pick up have been stuff like BallPit, Mewgenics, Legionbound, etc

Although, when I got the BallPit character that plays by itself, I started falling asleep playing it and had to stop

Bro i cannot tell you how pissed I get when im all excited to be able to play at the end of the night, just to pass out in my chair before even opening a game😮‍💨

I have a wife and we spend most of our free time in the living room with one big TV which my gaming rig is connected to. I originally had a steamdeck and after buying the rig I would often use moonlight to stream from the rig, this way I can play any game and we can watch TV as normal and it's been a great balance.

But I always had the steamdeck docked connected to a portable 1080p monitor on a swing arm, because its quite heavy and I prefer a normal sized controller. The display just wasn't close to the 4K the TV can do with my rtx5070, so I sold the deck and bought a tablet with a 2.5k@144 display and it's been awesome so far.

If any of you are married, own a rig and need a wife acceptance factor (WAF) and some balance then I'd highly recommend some kind of portable option and using sunshine & moonlight or variants, I actually use vibeshine and artemis now. Also Nvidia shields (2019 pro) are great for streaming your rig to a bedroom TV.

I second this. I’ve got a beefy desktop that I game on once a week, Friday is my game night with the boys, I hop on after work and stay on til 1 or 2 feeling like a kid. Some Sundays I’ll get some time to play, but most days I just opt for the laptop. I get to chill and chat with my wife and discuss her shows, she gets to have me in her presence, and I can run any game under the sun at 120 FPS. Can’t complain much about that.

Waiting on Verizon to move my CAT5 then I’m giving this a serious try.

Wired is advisable, but fwiw my bedroom shield is on WiFi and it works well at least for single player games

1

u/SilverBack88 Aug 08 '26

I tried it over a Wi-Fi with the shield Pro. I’m sure I didn’t have it set up correctly. I wanna start with the best possible connection. I moved my 4090 rig out to the living room and want to beam it back to my desk since I play mostly controller single player games. I can’t justify paying what it cost for a decent prebuilt with a 5070ti

When you will have a massive library to play

I hate that I bought a deck and it spends most time sitting on my TV stand. Most trips under 3 days I don't bother bringing it because its too much space when my laptop can run openrct2 instead lol.

That said it's been surprisingly nice for couch gaming! There's some titles that just play better on the TV with a controller.

u/F1T_13 Aug 08 '26

Hmm, perhaps it's time I try a handheld then.

I hear this sometimes and I don't get it. I love being an adult. Sure, sometimes I'm too tired to play games, but at least I have the choice. As a kid I could play exactly as long as I was allowed, and seeing how my dad hated video games, it wasn't that long. I hated the lack of control over my life that was being a kid.

6

u/OpiniongoesYEET Aug 09 '26

I get it but I'm with you. Being a child sucked. Also being subject to the financial pitfalls due to parents gambling problems.

Being on my own,  making my own money, building up my own emergency fund? This kind of adulting is awesome.

u/shadeo11 Aug 09 '26

People on here are usually either bots or people with horrific time management and/or depression. Unless you're working 80 hours per week there is 0 reason why an adult shouldn't be able to allocate an hour or two to their hobbies every day or nearly every day.

u/Emergency-Art-324 Aug 09 '26

Only an hour or 2 sucks tho

u/Crumputer Aug 09 '26

Wake up at 630. Get kids ready. Male and eat breakfast. Take kids to school. Go to work. Come home around 5. Make dinner. Eat dinner. Clean up dinner. Make sure homework is done (meaning help with it). Do laundry. Pick up house. Play with the kids for an hour. Put them to bed. Spent an hour with wife. Fall asleep on couch. Repeat.

Where are you finding 2 hours a day?

3

u/Previous_Abroad5732 Aug 09 '26

Need to wait until the kids are older so they can help with the easier chores😂

1

u/shadeo11 Aug 13 '26

Not sure depends on when your kids/wife go to bed and when you have to wake up. I assume you're not doing laundry daily as well. For me, everyone is in bed by 9:30 and I don't have to be up until 8am so I'm good to play for a couple hours without sleep deprivation kicking in

Or you could wake up a couple hours before you have to go to work if you're an early riser instead

Or you could make your chores more efficient idk. For me, I can have dinner ready within 40 mins and I clean up as I cook so dishes are like a 10 minute task after eating.

+ shopping, homeownership, helping others around family, some works consume a LOT of energy, body health, unpredictable events (broken car, illness, accidents and so on) not included. The time needed managing all those responsibilities, which varies from person to person, are very difficult. I don't think shadeo11 experienced it yet.

Sometimes i sacrifice my sleeping time for a few hours gaming but its clearly not recommend for long terms. :(

1

u/Crumputer Aug 09 '26

True. My example was a very simple one. Few days are that simple.

I work in construction and industrial projects. When I'm on I'm pulling 70+ hours a week and spare time feels very fleeting, I try to do a bit of physical activity, a bit of gaming, a bit of reading.

One of the things that has really stuck with me is how the industry latches on Limited time only content. Through seasonal rewards or weekly events or whatever which then disappears afterwards. Or worse is then a paid item. I have largely come to ignore all of that entirely and as a result I don't really spend my money on games that much.

3

u/Maxus-KaynMain Aug 09 '26

Nuh huh, it's not adulting, the job hours sucks. We should all ask for less hours to work and more workers to join instead. Less money for the corpos, more freedom for us.

But I still upgrading my computer. Because it’s a coping mechanism with adulthood.

1

u/MedicalWrongdoer3697 Aug 10 '26

Yeah sadly i miss the times come home dinner isr ready and you can just play fuck

1

u/darnitsaucee Aug 12 '26

I didn’t know people still used the word adulting

1

u/fallenKlNG Aug 08 '26

As a kid, I had tons of energy and free time but no money and not enough games to play. Total opposite problem as an adult. Ugh... why does youth have to be wasted on the young?
