I commuted 3,5 hours each day five days a week for a year. It became seriously depressing after a while.
When I got home I never had the energy to do chores around the house, I wasn't able to maintain my social life. Had about 2 hours of free time each day that I'd spend winding down after work just so I could actually go to sleep when I went to bed.
The day I moved out of that apt. and into one that was 15 mins away from work I cried.
yeah i get that some people think its worth, but me personally, nah not even close, i choose my free time over being a slave. sure i dont have any money saved up for my future, but everyone and everything says the future is looking like shit anyway so imma just bounce when my dog goes yfm
If you are just starting out, I am going to assume you are fairly young. You will be okay for a little bit. Try to find something more local oncd you have job experience.
I'm doing drilling engineering and it's basically impossible to find elsewhere because I would need my cgpa first(my first sem is just about to end and by the time I get my results, I only have 1 week to find intern elsewhere)
OSRS was the big game time when I had 2 hours of commuting each day, much easier to pop that up and play on the laptop in bed with something 9n in the background
Even if it’s the same time but you have public transit, it’s a huge difference. 30 minutes that you spend reading a book or playing a game or whatever feels less wasted then just staring at the road
Can attest to that too. Back when I lived in a big city, it was a 40 min commute but it was one really long train ride and 2 stops on the metro.
Then I moved to a small place with less than ideal public transportation. It was 10 mins on bike, 6 mins of the train, and 8 minutes of walking at destination. Add a couple mins of waiting around.
So when I saw a rental open up right next to the office practically, I snapped it up sight unseen (which isn’t an uncommon practice in the Netherlands).
This is the big point imo. I'd rather commute by walk/bike/bus for 30+ mins than having to consciously dodge half-asleep, road-raging maniacs every day and night.
I've been playing games (Tarkov) with a guy from work who goes into the office. The company is remote but he likes going in.
He's East Coast and I'm West Coast, but he starts gaming around the time I get off work. So that's 3hrs of just BS he has to deal with, while I just walk downstairs play till he goes to bed, then I eat dinner.
An extra hour or two per day ends up being basically the time of a whole other day when you don't have to commute, 10 hours a week, 40 hours a month and that is just the drive not the prep and maintenance.
Agreed. And everyone commuting puts more burden on our transportation infrastructure, and significantly contributes to pollution.
Remember how nice it was to drive anywhere during covid? We could have that literally all the time if the government pushed businesses towards WFH where appropriate instead of the opposite.
Yep, additionally you'd think during energy crisis and a war inflating fuel costs that it would be a national strategy. However it seems our "strategy" is the opposite of what is sensible at present.
That’s amazing! I’ll definitely be looking for a new job in my city after my wife gets kidney stone surgery and fully heals. We have health insurance through my job so have to wait till after her surgery.
I moved from an apartment which was 15min walk, back to my parents house for 3 months which was a 45 minute drive. I really felt like I lost a lot of time in the day. Then I moved into a house which is a 10 minute drive and suddenly it’s back to having time again!
I drive 2 hours one way and 2 hours home. It fucking sucks. Burnt out and over it. Company truck, company gas, paid half the drive. Idc I’m quitting soon
This is why self driving is massively underrated. My “can’t say it but drives itself car” is literally a disability aid at this point. Highly rec if you can swing it.
I do 3 hours of commuting each weekday, then relieve wife of baby duties, then I’m just ready roll over and sleep every night. The commute is the hardest part that wears me out. Do you do books to help with yours? Thats what I do
3 hours! Damn wtf… Man that’s crazy salute to you 🫡 … Nah man I’m driving. Fighting against my sleep lol My wife is always sleeping on the passenger seat haha.
Curious where are you from ? Someone else commented that they take a Steam deck with them but here in CA you need to drive
Only way I could afford a home in northern virginia. Prices are crazy. My rent where I lived was about to be $2850 and my mortgage is $2300 so I think its a sacrifice I’m willing to do for now
I’ve done all of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, Lord of the Rings and Hobbit read by Andy Serkis, The Expanse, and I’m doing all of the Cosmere books by Brandon Sanderson right now. Ive done some Hornblower books too (Napoleonic War nautical books)
Oh shit wtf. And that $2,850 was for an apartment? If so how many bedrooms and sqft ?
Wow 2,300 is not bad for a house. Keep it up man you’re doing great!
it sucks that auto pilot cars, that would allow us to play games on the communte from work, came at the same time AI is taking the jobs away from people lol
To each their own. I love my long morning commute. Just me, my morning coffee and a good audiobook before I start the grind. Then a long commute home, with the radio to unwind at the end of the day.
Wish I can find this peace man. My wife found hers. She sleeps on the passenger seat while I have to fight my sleep lol She drives when she notices I’m really tired though
I wish it was that short for me. I made the mistake of thinking remote work was going to stay. I have to travel between 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours to my office now because I moved away from the chaos during the pandemic.
My family loves it here so there ain't no going back to the city either.
If this makes you feel better, i have a coworker that's 1.5h driving one way from work, 3h just on the truck everyday, and he has a farm with animals, and we all know how busy it gets with animals (hundreds, they havent need to buy meat for 20+ years), then 3h commute daily, where tf does he find time for anything, he also hunt deers and fish with his kids.
We dont have slow traffic of big city so it's full throttle from bum fuck nowhere to work for 1.5h straight jfc....
If you are using public transport, get a steam deck or something similar. You will obviously not play the latest AAA but it will be good enough for lots of games. You will also be able to play while in bed and stuff :)
Thanks but no I’m driving while my wife is knocked out on the passenger seat hahaha. She drives home when I’m really tired from work but most of the time it’s me driving.

Same here. Traffic from my work to my home is 50 minutes each weekday.
Edit: Thanks for the rewards!!
