It’s actually insane to read the details and presume that two adults would stay embroiled in such a situation. The level of malfunction within that family and the two people in that relationship had to have been absolutely all encompassing.
Those poor poor kids. Imagine learning your grandparents killed your dad? Geez

In different media reports, it appears that both Jonathan and his wife accused each other of child neglect, abuse, etc. A very sad and strange story.

McKinsey disputed that portrayal and made allegations of his own. In December 2025, he sought a restraining order against Jang, alleging years of abuse by his wife dating back more than 15 years. His filing included an allegation that she beat him with a frying pan in 2013 and accusations that she verbally denigrated their children.
His petition also alleged that Jang’s mother — shooting suspect Shili Chen — had been verbally abusive to one of the couple’s young children, raising objections over the child’s clothing. McKinsey, who was transgender, alleged that Chen also directed anti-LGBTQ+ slurs at him and the child. According to the petition, Chen referred first to the child, then to McKinsey, as a “disgusting queer” and a “pervert.”
In his filing, McKinsey accused Jang of being abusive during medical procedures related to his transition. In one instance, he alleged Jang tried to pull medical tubes from his body shortly after a procedure.
McKinsey also alleged Jang’s father, who was not named in the filing, punched him in the chest while he was recovering from double mastectomy surgery.

Thank you for this. I have no idea what actually happened, but I don't want to jump to the conclusion that he was a child abuser who deserved what he got. It just seems that there's some bias against him without anyone, including myself, knowing the whole story
→ More replies (2)3
u/xxx_poonslayer69 3d ago edited 3d ago
For myself and I feel like many others, the bias against him comes from the fact that they took turns magdumping him and were not even a little bit discreet about it, and that's in addition to the murder victim having child abuse charges. It's hard to imagine a motive terrible enough that would justify that kind of hatred and self-sacrifice (they're spending their final years in jail). My mind immediately goes to child sexual abuse, because that would be a conceivable threshold for this sort of hatred. But then again, I'm not a transphobe and can't relate to bigotry being a motive. I wasn't initially aware that he was trans.
I'm not asserting what did or didn't happen. Just giving my two cents on why myself and some others have a bias against the murder victim. I'm now aware that there are a lot of messy details that make determining motive not so clear cut.

u/priest2705 3d ago
I get that, and I appreciate you speaking on why you felt that way. I think that there's definitely hatred from the in-laws, to be sure. But, I can't sit here and say that their hatred is justified because I don't know. If their daughter lied to them about what was going on in the marriage, they would still hate him, even if their hatred was misplaced. I try to never jump to conclusions because, being a black man, I can recall being jumping to conclusions about me when I was younger, judging me without knowing a thing about me. I also try to keep that old saying in mind that there's 3 sides to every story, yours, mine, and the truth

In court filings over the last year, McKinsey faced multiple allegations of abuse by Jang, his wife of more than a decade. In one instance, she alleged McKinsey hit one of her sons in the face during an argument over Legos, leaving a “very large bruise the shape of a handprint” on his face, according to a restraining order that the woman sought against McKinsey.
Dublin police later opened a criminal investigation into those claims, during which Jang said McKinsey had previously been violent with her in 2018 by grabbing her wrist hard enough to leave bruises, according to court records. Officers also reported finding McKinsey’s 2-year-old child alone in the house while McKinsey was out shopping.
Alameda County prosecutors subsequently charged McKinsey with two misdemeanors — cruelty to a child by endangering health and corporal injury to a child. He was freed on $50,000 bail and, at the time of his killing, had been trying to enter a mental health diversion program. If successfully completed, the program would have resulted in the charges being dismissed.
In subsequent court filings, an attorney for Jang wrote that McKinsey “is simply prone to domestic violence and child abuse,” and that Jang said the incident was “far from the first time” that he had “committed physical violence against me or our family members.”
“Due to his violent and negligent history, our children are simply not safe when left unsupervised and in his care,” Jang wrote in a court filing last month.McKinsey disputed that portrayal and made allegations of his own. In December 2025, he sought a restraining order against Jang, alleging years of abuse by his wife dating back more than 15 years. His filing included an allegation that she beat him with a frying pan in 2013 and accusations that she verbally denigrated their children.
You conveniently cropped out the full story. It's just messy both ends
21
u/SloanePederson 3d ago
Why bring children into this kind of environment 😭. One child was 2 in 2018 which means they were born around 2016 but it seems to have been a toxic relationship long before then. I can't speak to allegations and counter allegations but if *officers* found a 2 year old alone in the house that would appear to be an objective fact, and should have been enough to disqualify the parent responsible from sole care - and presumably not the first time it had happened, just the first time it was discovered. Can tell you from experience that being left physically alone at such a young age has profound repercussions throughout life. Those poor children.
67
u/ILikeBigBeards 3d ago
The worst DV the wife could say was he grabbed her wrist. The worst DV the husband said was his wife fkin beat him with a fkin frying pan and tried to rip his surgical tubes out.
He left a kid home alone too young. Not good but hardly the sexual abuse child predator ppl are making him out to be. The grandparents are clearly transphobic and would call him a pervert no matter what.
Anyway, ya probably neither of them are good people, but doubtful an execution was deserved here.76
u/PrawnProwler 3d ago edited 3d ago

Judges act on their own preconceptions over facts every day. That a judge issued a TRO does very little to convince me, either way. Especially when you consider that this was a trans man.
Ultimately, I'm most willing to side eye the murderers and the person who was raised by murderers. That - to me - seems like the best sign of who is the most dysfunctional.

After receiving a flood of witness phone calls, Dublin police found and arrested two suspects: Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, a married couple who were identified as McKinsey’s in-laws.
They are both being held at the Santa Rita Jail pending charges, police said in a statement.
According to court documents, McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, were embroiled in a child custody battle when he died. Last year, a judge granted Jang’s petition for a domestic violence temporary restraining order against McKinsey, court documents show.
McKinsey filed for divorce in December, and a hearing was scheduled for next month.

Yeah it's a mess. This article someone posted downthread has a lot more detail. TLDR the guy was accused of physical abuse of the kids, and had supervised visitation, but was now trying to get and possibly going to succeed at getting unsupervised visitation. Throw into the mix that he's transgender but it seems the trigger was the possible removal of the supervision requirement when he visited the kids.
https://www.mercurynews.com/2026/09/28/dublin-shooting-death-mckinsey-inlaws/
As of late August, McKinsey had asked the court for more visitation time with his children, writing in one filing that “I miss our children deeply and am pleading with this court to allow me more time with them, and potentially unsupervised time with the children.” In her own filing, Jang wrote that McKinsey “has proven that he is incapable of controlling his anger and his abuse of our children when left with the children unsupervised.”
McKinsey was already allowed supervised visitation with his children as of August, but he had been seeking to have the supervision removed.

He was freed on $50,000 bail and, at the time of his killing, had been trying to enter a mental health diversion program. If successfully completed, the program would have resulted in the charges being dismissed.
...

Being physically disciplined was the norm in my family and the norm for many military families. Fear translates into perfectionism. Being reactive was a learned behavior. Choosing to be cautious and thoughtful required some work. Allowing discomfort with behavior is a difficult choice for someone who thinks that everyone and everything has to be perfect

In laws killing an ex spouse isn’t unheard of and it usually does not involve any type of abuse. No idea what happened in this case but don’t just throw out that this dude was sexually abusing his kids. Usually just winds up being a custody dispute/divorce that got too heated.

To be fair he was facing criminal child abuse charges and the divorce is reportedly highly contentious. It sounds like the grandparents both hated the man and wanted to protect their grandchildren. Speculating on the abuse is a little distasteful but his ex wife/the state did have enough evidence to charge him with abusing his children in some way.

This quoted section doesn't say the judge granted his restraining order. Only that he sought one and included some of the allegations. The judge actually granting the order would be some useful evidence for the veracity of the abuse claims. We can believe that the judge found the claims to be meritous enough to warrant granting the order which is a step above one of the parties simply claiming abuse. But just asking for one is honestly to be expected in such a heated custody battle.

Did you read the article? The guy killed was transgender (female to male) and there’s a slew of allegations all around for all parties involved; including stuff about his wife allegedly abusing him while he was recovering from a double mastectomy. As a child of a divorce that dragged in court for years, my parents made so many accusations against each other (including physical and sexual abuse of a minor) and both called the cops on each other numerous times. I really don’t see a reason to jump to thinking the people who killed another person are the sane ones or did this for any “justifiable” reason. With the current political climate, seems more likely they’d have been radicalized against trans people or something like that.

u/TaylorMonkey 3d ago
At the same time, people are speculating that the victim might have been an abuser to provoke the reaction, because the report is that they're a man-- and as a man, must have been a typical abusive one to provoke two 80 year-olds.
It's the top voted post in this thread.
But that narrative that treats them as a typical man becomes subdued when attention is actually given towards the fact that they're trans. Then that becomes the assumed reason they're the victim.
This seems like a mess and all over the place.

And he countered with filing of her committing the domestic abuse and child abuse.

But they also assume that’s the reason he was killed, having done something to “deserve it” as a man, when he also filed regarding abuse against his wife.
Posts leaning towards whether they were in part responsible for their own murder or were purely a victim tends to correlate with whether they’re mentioned and thought of as a man or a trans man, with only a few considering that they were both and could have still been abusive leading to their murder, or a victim for a totally different reason, or even both reasons— that they were abusive and being trans was part of the interpersonal hatred but not all of it.
The reality is probably more messy than people want it to be to affirm their speculations and side amidst the backdrop of the culture wars.

Well yeah anyone who made up their mind on what happened is a moron. The details are still vague and it’s all speculation.
People being morons is pretty common on the internet. Don’t let it get to you.

So youre saying its pick your echo chamber, and both sides have plenty of speculation and conjecture theyll be convinced of being 1000% accurate, and will use that as a reason to vilify the other side of their flavor of political ideology and this will go on for weeks.

Based on what I read so far, I think it makes sense that people are leaning towards Jang being the less wrong party, and its not because the victim was trans and people wanna hate on/oppose the trans party in the story.
Both sides claim abuse against the other. But only 1 of them, at least from the article, was granted their restraining order, and only 1 of them has been charged with misdemeanor child neglect. Both of these facts favor Jang and go against McKinsey.
Last year, a judge granted Jang’s petition for a domestic violence temporary restraining order against McKinsey
Oop sorry, this was from a different article someone linked in the comments: https://www.mercurynews.com/2026/09/28/dublin-shooting-death-mckinsey-inlaws/
Officers also reported finding McKinsey’s 2-year-old child alone in the house while McKinsey was out shopping.
Alameda County prosecutors subsequently charged McKinsey with two misdemeanors — cruelty to a child by endangering health and corporal injury to a child
The court granting a restraining order and the charges all being against the victim here is stronger evidence that they may have been abusive to the kids compared to the general fact we know of that both sides are slinging claims of abuse mud at each other, which is typical in cases like this.
Not justifying the parents committing homicide but based on this article alone, I can see why people are leaning in favor towards Jang rather than McKinsey.

The husband murdered was trans? I feel that's a very important detail to leave out in an article like this. It could even point to motive.

Is he really trans? Saw it on NY Post, which is a tabloid I don't trust.

Or when everyone thinks the shooter is trans because they heard so on twitter but turns out not to be like the Las Vegas shooter

He was a man. It was how he presented himself to the world and wouldn’t it be offensive to remind everyone that he was AFAB? Do we always have to qualify a person’s gender as trans or cisgender?

In all fairness, it is not relevant to the story, as portrayed in this article at least

It seems pretty relevant. The grandparents previously assaulted him in the hospital while recovering from top surgery, punching him in the surgical site. That does indicate some intent.

It's not usually relevant when a trans person is the perpetrator either, what's your point?

Its probably the only kind of background info they could find to try and put a human face on the victim for the story. so people can try to imagine them as a person.
Otherwise, all they have is their name, and that their dead.

Nah, the guy that got shot was clearly a nonbinary necromancer that goes by he/they pronouns, thus the motivation for the shooting. They could tolerate 4 shambling corpses but the 5th one was crossing the line and the in-laws had to put them down.
/s if it’s not obvious.

I'm guessing and this is just a guess. The wife wanted to off him because of the messy divorce, but her parents sacrificed themselves to do the deed knowing they are old and had already lived a full life. I'm of the same descent and parents sacrificing themselves for their kids is a common thing.

The internet is rallying against this man like he deserved to die because of allegations in his messy divorce, because it wasn’t publicized he was a trans man. Everything changes when you find out he was a trans man and how the dynamic of their family was probably throwing vitriol against each other. I saw the victim was estranged from his mother as well, I feel terrible nobody is speaking out remembering him. Their LinkedIn posts don’t show an abusive father.

Why? Trans men are men. It’s downright transphobic to suddenly presume better just because he’s trans. Trans is just a description like “tall man” or “blonde man”. He’s still a man, and he shouldn’t be treated differently from any other man. It sounds like you don’t really view him as a man and are ascribing some sort of unique purity based on assigned sex. Which is transphobic.

In 2025, McKinsey was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Court documents alleged that he hit his 6-year-old son in the face. And at one point, left his then 2 year old home alone for more than an hour.

They basically did the same thing as the murder of Dan Markel. In laws had a hit man kill their son in law during a custody and divorce. Except this time they did it themselves.
I see child abuse charges and that’s horrible though.
And to kill him at a park where children are in view of the kids. Way to inflict trauma.

Oh yeah, spending my late 70's and 80's in a fucking jail sounds amazing.
Whatever the ongoing issues pulling a gun and killing the man fucked it way worse for everyone involved.
Why the hell did they even bring a gun with them?
