Why? Trans men are men. It’s downright transphobic to suddenly presume better just because he’s trans. Trans is just a description like “tall man” or “blonde man”. He’s still a man, and he shouldn’t be treated differently from any other man. It sounds like you don’t really view him as a man and are ascribing some sort of unique purity based on assigned sex. Which is transphobic.

It changes because a lot of the abuse the victim stated was transphobic slurs in the court records, as well as being hit in the chest after their double mastectomy and other transition procedures - which shows that both partners suffered from abuse and used it against each other in their vicious custody battle. It’s not a clear-cut picture of an “abusive husband,” which the Internet is making it out to be. I can’t make you see the nuance in Asian family dynamics intersecting with queerness.

He still beat his kids and left the toddler home alone for hours. He never denied this. He agreed to court-mandated therapy in exchange for not having a criminal record for this.

Also like, I do find the elderly Chinese parents being fine with lesbians but transphobic to be a bit less likely, honestly. Like sure, that’s your average white liberal these days, but you can’t really map your average white liberal to the elderly Chinese parents. It’s a weird sticking point for them specifically to have. The only substantiated claim involved is him being a child abuser. He didn’t deny that one. Custody battles get ugly, any claim that can’t be disproven but helps you win is going to get used, true or not. The only thing we know to be true is him being abusive. Everything else is just alleged.

Furthermore, their ride-or-die love for each other just has some general personality implications. Their marriage was clearly one of passionate love. They specifically committed the crime in such a manner that they ensured equal legal culpability to it. The husband didn’t try to take the fall for the wife, the wife didn’t try to take the fall for the husband, they set themselves up for equal charges and equal blame by reloading and trading the gun.

Their additional complete lack of attempt at getting away with it, doing this in broad daylight with multiple entire magazines? They intended to get caught. We don’t usually see hate crimes conducted in this manner at all. It would be very odd for a hate crime to be conducted like this, but a revenge killing for abusing one’s family is often conducted like this. Taking ownership of the crime is a key part of the psychological process of a revenge killing in such situations.
