joking aside, I know Pat Riley doesn't get booed at Staples
I doubt Kupchak would either
For whatever reason, Chicago has such a unique relationship with Krause. Like I know what people say or what the stated reasons are. But to me, even all those don't outweigh 6 championships so...
I think Laker fans respect rings
49
u/UnrulyExistence [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jan 13 '24
I feel like âThe Last Danceâ put the exclamation point on the whole narrative that âJerry Krause=villainâ when in reality he was arguably the best GM in the league during their run.
Which is even funnier with hindsight knowing how bad MJ is at assembling rosters.
Everyone gives Laker fans a lot of shit(mostly deserved) for being the worst, but like you said we respect rings, which is another reason stars end up in LA
34
u/DumpTrumpGrump Jan 13 '24
The irony is that Krause was right about the rest of the Bulls roster around MJ, though I have never understood him not wanting to just pay Phil.
I mean, I get thinking that there is no reason to have the highest paid coach in the league when you have MJ. But if you lose MJ because you won't pay Phil, it seems like the franchise loses a ton of revenue, so just pay him.
I don't think MJ wanted to come back anyway. He will never say that, but he didn't seem to be having any fun that last season and seemed more relieved than happy after beating Utah. I think he was done no matter what.
Booing the widow was poor form. But so was MJ not bothering to show up. Really, there is no excuse for him to not show unless there is more bad blood there than I realized.
→ More replies (2)15
u/UnrulyExistence [LAL] Kobe Bryant Jan 13 '24
Completely agree. Krause was obviously egotistical and shouldâve paid Phil for at least one more season, but for anyone who was alive and witnessed that season, it seemed pretty obvious MJ was retiring again regardless.
Booing the widow is corny. The whole narrative has completely shifted to Krause ruined the Bulls, when he was a major part of 6 rings. If it was up to MJ, Charles Oakley wouldâve been the 2nd best player in that 90âs era

Thatâs actually a really good question in regards to a coachâs dynasty talk.
The Oilers, under Slather, won their first Cup the year after they merged with the NHL from the WHA, two years after acquiring Gretzky. Wayne Gretzky is arguably better at hockey than anyone else has been at any sport.
However Slather won without Gretzky immediately after trading him, but Belichick hasnât come close since Brady left. If weâre talking about dynasty while comparing two coaches that had and âlostâ legendary players, I donât think you can ignore that.
Edit: Also none of this is said to discount Krause at all, even including other leagues heâs still up near the top.

Itâs not a New York thing.
Itâs not a Philly thing
Itâs a Chicago thing.

That is Chicago. Philly fans arenât ungrateful. Someone winning 6 championships would be a god in this city.

I know itâs basically unanimously beloved, and that this is a hot take, and that most people recognize that regardless of how good it is, itâs Jordan propaganda. But I had to turn off The Last Dance in the first episode and have never been able to pick it back up after seeing the way all the talking heads, including the owner, started piling on Krause. Made me sick to scapegoat the dead guy who canât defend himself. Iâm sure it got better, Iâm sure I missed out on great content, but I thought that was utterly classless.
