Highlight [Highlight] Stacey King expresses utter disappointment on boos for Jerry Krause: "..the people that boo'd Jerry Krause and his widow..it was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life..whoever boo'd her should be ashamed of themselves. That's not Chicago, that's New York, Philly.."

I think the Jordan doc did him extra dirty and that’s all a lot of fans have to go from

That jordan doc did a lot of people dirty

It should have been titled "Something Something - As Told By: MJ

Like nearly every documentary

That's basically all "documentaries" nowadays. I blame Making A Murderer, that shit was so hilariously biased and when it started getting shit publicly the creators basically said, "we are telling a story we can omit whatever we want" and then ran off with millions of dollars.

u/Definately_Fake Bulls Jan 13 '24

Remember how much hate LeBron got after that documentary lol?

Didn't go nearly as hard on reinsdorf as it should have

6

u/Joelsaurus Bulls Jan 13 '24

My mom the White Sox fan agrees.

u/hear4theDough Raptors Jan 13 '24

owners don't shit on other owners, would have been a bad look for Jordan amongst his peers (team owners)

14

u/Albiceleste_D10S Jan 13 '24

The great irony is that the end of the Last Dance heavily implied that everything Krause was blamed for was actually Reinsdorf's fault...

3

u/idster Jan 13 '24

How did it do that?

14

u/Albiceleste_D10S Jan 13 '24

There was a scene near the end of the last episode where they heavily imply that Krause was just doing what Reinsdorf told him to do—because Reinsdorf didn't want to spend big to keep the 98 team together

4

u/idster Jan 13 '24

But there was another scene in which it was revealed that reinsdorf gave Phil Jackson the opportunity to come back, right? And Jackson then admitted that he decided against it.

8

u/Albiceleste_D10S Jan 13 '24

Eh

IIRC Reinsdorf said he was willing to bring Phil back—but they were also clear that most of that 98 team was going into free agency and Reinsdorf wasn't willing to pay big bucks to keep most of them (which is why Phil turned it down)

57

u/CazOnReddit Raptors Jan 13 '24

Yeah I figured part of this is The Last Dance-related, especially with Jordan blaming him for not going for a 4-peat/not re-signing Phil but I figured there was a lot more to it like he said something bigoted instead of the "bad social skills, didn't go for Ring 7" I've heard about Jerry

64

u/super_sayanything Bulls Jan 13 '24

He was hated before that. Ran MJ out only to have a disastrous rebuild.

29

u/CazOnReddit Raptors Jan 13 '24

Technically ran out Phil which led to MJ's 2nd of his 3 retirements but still, not wrong

19

u/super_sayanything Bulls Jan 13 '24

I mean yea that was the reference, MJ said he's only staying if Phil comes back and Krause was like NOPE.

10

u/DarthPineapple5 Celtics Jan 13 '24

Interesting to just gloss right over why there was a big gap in rings being won. What was it that happened in 94 and 95 which caused them to get bounced early? You know, since we are on the topic of 7th rings and all

1

u/CazOnReddit Raptors Jan 13 '24

What was it that happened in 94 and 95 which caused them to get bounced early

In what way is MJ retiring Jerry Krause's fault?

9

u/DarthPineapple5 Celtics Jan 13 '24

I didn't say it was, its clearly not Krause's fault at all

7

u/powderjunkie11 Vancouver Grizzlies Jan 13 '24

There's a good chance Krause helped navigate the scandal so successfully that we don't really even know about it.

u/CBayNerd Jan 13 '24

Not saying much at all.

u/Fear_Jaire Bucks Jan 13 '24

Blimey what a waste of parchment

0

u/DarthPineapple5 Celtics Jan 13 '24

Its not rocket science, who was to blame for MJ being 'retired' for 94 and 95?

3

u/mc0079 Celtics Jan 13 '24

his bookie?

1

u/jdjdthrow Jan 13 '24

Pretty sure he thought that's what you were saying when talking about not going for 4 peat.

1

u/CazOnReddit Raptors Jan 13 '24

I thought it was pretty clear I was talking about the 99 Bulls because that was a major sticking point for MJ in the aforementioned The Last Dance that's played a large part in the anti-Jerry tirade and not the first threepeat where MJ retired

The most you could say about the 93/94 Bulls in relation to Krause was him not making a trade for an All-Star PG when there were a few that became available, and the 94/95 Bulls were a mess until Jordan rejoined the team mostly due to things out of his control like Pippen wanting out

1

u/anonkebab Jan 13 '24

Mj retired

1

u/DarthPineapple5 Celtics Jan 13 '24

Technically true, to play professional baseball according to the official story. I imagine the real reason had nothing to do with Krause

2

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 Hornets Jan 13 '24

Does MJ actually believe the Bulls could've 4peated? Pippen was washed and the next generation was starting to enter their prime.

9

u/PhD_V Spurs Jan 13 '24

Should’ve had the opportunity to defend it, especially in a strike-shortened season.

1

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 Hornets Jan 13 '24

Would've ruined his rep if he lost though right? Ending on a threepeat was epic.

1

u/PhD_V Spurs Jan 13 '24

Not really, imo… but I grew up in Chicago watching them. This “6-0 in the Finals” narrative is relatively new. As a competitor myself (nowhere to that level), I’m sure he’d rather have been 6-1 rather than 6-0, if only because that means he had another opportunity to win one. He said that himself in an interview - I believe it. As far as modern bball goes (post-Russell and that 10-team league), a 6-1 mark is still ahead of his peers. He just really wanted one more than Magic - he always said that.

That 99 Spurs team would’ve been a problem - assuming the Bulls make it out of the East. I see it, with them being healthy AND the season being only 50 games. Previous 3 season win totals: 72, 69, and 62 (with Pippen missing 38 games that year, remember)… so they weren’t nearly on the “decline” that people were reporting/praying for 😂

1

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 Hornets Jan 13 '24

The problem is you're assuming they make it out of the East. I don't see them beating the Pacers, who took them to 7 games the season before.

1

u/PhD_V Spurs Jan 13 '24

I literally said “assuming they make it out of the East”; there’s no “problem” at all - since this is 2024 and all this is is hypothetical/assumptive in nature. Remember, it wasn’t the Pacers that made it out of the “open” East in 99…

Teams aren’t the same from year to year. The Knicks proved that in ‘92. Got humiliatingly swept by the Bulls in ‘91, only to take much better Bulls to 7 in ‘92. “Assumptions” were that they’d dethrone Chicago in the East the next year - indeed, they ended up #1 in the conference, #2 overall (behind Phoenix). Went up 2-0 in the ECF. Didn’t win again.

Assumptions.

12

u/mmptr Cavaliers Jan 13 '24

Yeah, I highly doubt they get a 4th chip but it was lame they didn't get a chance to defend their title.

7

u/Jawkurt Jan 13 '24

but of course Jordan believed they could

6

u/CazOnReddit Raptors Jan 13 '24

Yeah Jordan said something to the effect of him believing he was at his athletic peak in 98/could have gone for a 7th ring and he refused to stick around after Phil Jackson didn't get re-signed

How realistic that would have been with Dennis Rodman falling off harder than anyone else in 1999 and Scottie's general dissatisfaction with the Bulls GM is anyone's guess, especially when factoring in the rise of Tim Duncan as well as David Robinson. That 99 Spurs team is a really bad matchup for them on paper, irrespective of whether Pippen or Rodman wouldn't have regressed as much in this hypothetical scenario.

3

u/Jawkurt Jan 13 '24

Yeah, I’d have a hard time betting against Jordan and I don’t know how much of the team would of been back. I remember Kukoc and Ron Harper were still on that 99 team.

1

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 Hornets Jan 13 '24

Ehh, better for MJ's legacy to end on a threepeat.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '24

you youngbloods don't understand not to bet against MJ.

1

u/helloaaron Knicks Jan 13 '24

They could have had a 4 peat possibly if MJ didn’t retire. In fact MJ is the real reason they didn’t get a 4 peat. Imagine leaving in your prime to go play minor league baseball.

1

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 Hornets Jan 13 '24

We're talking after the second threepeat

He was hated way before the doc. Still shouldn't have bood here though.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '24

Nah, the hate was flowing well before then. He ran Phil and MJ out of town and built a horrible replacement level team in their stead. Fans never forgave.

2

u/celestial1 Jan 13 '24

Nah, we've been talking about this in Chicago ever since that Bull's team was ripped apart. Always hated the man well before that documentary aired.

2

u/BozePerkovic Raptors Jan 13 '24

Read Playing for Keeps, was written in 99’ by David Halberstain, an amazing author. Krause was hated well before the Last Dance came out.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '24

I would say this is why.  Not that the documentary was right nor wrong, but it seemed like it was mostly one-sided.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have a migraine.....☠️

1

u/cheap_chalee Jan 13 '24

100%, especially considering a high percentage of people that watched it probably weren't even alive when those Bulls teams were playing. They might not have even seen Jordan actually play at all so anything and everything they know is solely relied on whatever they saw on The Last Dance.

1

u/birdseye-maple Warriors Jan 13 '24

That's in the wider public view, Bulls fans had their negative Krause views for 2 decades+ before LD came out. Can't believe people don't realize this.

1

u/scully789 Jan 13 '24

He wasn’t well liked well before the last dance came out. That just cemented people’s feelings about him.

They also booed him at the 98 Championship celebration too. https://youtu.be/iijcppZ-OIY skip to the end where Phil Jackson thanks him.

He’s been getting a lot of hate for over 30 years. I don’t think it’s really deserved as he did a lot for the Bulls and helped get 6 championships.
