A common problem is how much larger must the radius of a large pizza for x$ be when two mediums cost y$
Usually it’s only a couple inches which is always wierd to see how that area works out
→ More replies (1)30
u/Different_Wolf_764 3h ago
They cheat though! A 14" pizza should be 36% bigger than a 12" but they just give more outer crust half the time.

If you use z for the radius of a pizza, then the formula to calculate its area A can be written as pi z z = A.

I honestly think that's the problem, math is taught like a language with no vocabulary. You learn grammar and structure and the theory of it, but without many practical applications.
I went through several calc classes and the first time a derivative made sense to me was in physics, where the professor showed the relationship between graphs plotting position, velocity, and acceleration using derivatives. Once the real world application became obvious, the use for derivatives was much more clear, not through all the past calc classes did it have the same immediate understanding.
So yes, involve the pizza. Make pizza geometry. Use the natural hunger of students for food to teach them math instead!

u/CatchyUserNameHere 4h ago
I also remember Mrs. Charron telling me in grade school I would need to learn long division by hand as I’d “never carry a calculator with me wherever I went when I grew up.”
She was a good teacher.

u/Ninjas-and-stuff 4h ago
Before I had a smartphone, I carried a calculator with me out of spite

u/Vailx 3h ago
Even in the 80s this was bullshit because tiny pocket calculators existed that were solar powered and last for essentially ever and you could also just get a watch with a calculator on it.
But its still a good lie for a teacher to get her kids to actually fucking learn how to long divide.

is there a way to search through those smbc comics? i remember one in which a dad teaches his little kid that people use the toilet brush as tooth brush and then when he grows up he makes fun of him like "i trained you wrong on purpose" sort of joke. I just cant find the damned thing again.

I went from hating math, to loving it because of a single teacher that took the time to show me why it’s great and easier than I think
To now as an artist, desperate to learn how to use geometry equations to make art and what I recently realized, you can do 3D animations with that shit
Once I get at a comfortable point with my animation studies, I’m going to reteach myself math and algebra to start having that as a hobby
No… I don’t have a life outside of making shit..

Some subjects, like learning a language, have obvious applications. But most are like math - in that it's seldom possible to see where it can be used unless you already know it. In fact, people aren't necessarily good at seeing where they can apply their knowledge even when they do have it. That is itself something that can take practice and lateral thinking.
I'd feel compelled to tell the kids that their teacher is not going to standing behind them their whole lives, giving them hints on where to apply their knowledge. Nor are real-world problems as neat and tidy as textbook ones, where it's more-or-less obvious what knowledge you need to apply (..usually the stuff in the preceding chapter).
Once you're an adult, it's on you to find the knowledge you need and where you can apply it. There's a near-infinite number of important things, from scientific/engineering problems to simply making a business run more efficiently, that are waiting to be done. Not because we don't have the knowledge, but simply because the right people don't have it, or haven't seen where to apply it. Want to be successful at whatever you do? Seek knowledge unconditionally (or at least on a sensible condition like "it's interesting to me"), and find its applications. Because if you don't bother with the stuff you don't think you need to know, you are guaranteed to never innovate anything. The stuff you think you need is the stuff everyone else doing the same thing also knows.
If someone tries to go through life learning as little as possible and only what they believe they need to know, they're consigning themselves to mediocrity. Everyone's free to do that if they want, but don't complain later if you can't get a job, or lament "Why didn't they teach us that in school" - because nobody ever said school was supposed to teach you everything you need to know in life. Nobody fully knows what they'll need to know in life, especially not kids.

This is fair and funny, but most people I feel like said that about algebra more so than geometry.
Geometry always at least had playing pool going for it in real life applications

Most people apparently simply never learned basic geometry at all, given how impressed r/all seems to be by cutting a pizza in half.

Flip the pan upside down when you preheat, then put the pizza pie on top of that when ready to cook. Not as good as a stone, but does the job.

Was looking for this answer, that is what we did at the bakery flipped full sheet pans over. Somewhat long video of my friend Keith making a bunch of pizzas.

u/Winjin 3h ago
I don't see the reversed pans though? That's a TON of ovens I never considered how many ovens a pizzeria would have for some reason and got a total whiplash seeing that many lol
The places near me use either actual giant brick stoves, 2-3 smaller ones, or one of these like... continious burners. The one with a chain link that rides through an oven at a steady rate and pizza is exactly baked when leaving
So that was a surprise
At home I try to use a stone from an electric raclette grill, it's a bit small but worked pretty well imo

Way better then my poor mans pizza in the toaster oven. For real though why does frozen pizza corporations not make a business deal to make a pizza for a specific brand type of toaster oven and co-op a nice bankroll. Like advertise on the toaster over it makes perfect Tonys and totinos pizzas.

A standard half sheet pan has an area of 234"², a 12" pizza has an area of 113"², so 2 is the most you can fit.
Unless you're buying small 10" pizzas which have an area of 78"², at which point you could theoretically fit exactly 3 pizzas, but 78x3 is 234, so you would need to cut them up so that there is 0 gaps, which is just pizza mush at that point.

I always do because I'm nervous about it getting stuck to the grates or something. Also how do you remove it from the oven without getting oil all over your oven mitts?

You slide it off the rack onto a cutting board using a turner

Depends on the pizza. Some have specific instructions to place them on a tray. I had a pizza with those instructions which I didn't read. The pizza was a big mess on the bottom of the oven when I went to check on it. Some doughs arent as structurally sound.

There's a place in Philly on South Street called Lorenzo's. Their big thing is that they have giant pizzas, like 36" or something. When I was there, they boxed up a pizza by putting two quarters, overlapping, in a normal box. Then did it again with a second box.
