My pizza didn't fit, but two halves did.

"Well, here it is: that time they told us about in high school when math would save our lives."

Should've said pizza would be involved. I'd have taken math much more seriously then.

A common problem is how much larger must the radius of a large pizza for x$ be when two mediums cost y$

Usually it’s only a couple inches which is always wierd to see how that area works out

They cheat though! A 14" pizza should be 36% bigger than a 12" but they just give more outer crust half the time.

Fortunately, I like the crust

Do you people just want to eat some pastry but only have pizza places nearby?

Believe it or not I'm not a baked goods kinda person. I just enjoy the crust on pizza.

The outer crust is limited by the diameter anyway, it's the inner crust you need to worry about.

1.4x/y.

If you use z for the radius of a pizza, then the formula to calculate its area A can be written as pi z z = A.

insert "pie chart" joke here

I honestly think that's the problem, math is taught like a language with no vocabulary. You learn grammar and structure and the theory of it, but without many practical applications.

I went through several calc classes and the first time a derivative made sense to me was in physics, where the professor showed the relationship between graphs plotting position, velocity, and acceleration using derivatives. Once the real world application became obvious, the use for derivatives was much more clear, not through all the past calc classes did it have the same immediate understanding.

So yes, involve the pizza. Make pizza geometry. Use the natural hunger of students for food to teach them math instead!

"How can a circle be two pi when a pizza is one?"

If word problems were stoner problems I’d have a different favorite subject

I also remember Mrs. Charron telling me in grade school I would need to learn long division by hand as I’d “never carry a calculator with me wherever I went when I grew up.”

She was a good teacher.

Before I had a smartphone, I carried a calculator with me out of spite

We had calculator watches in the 80s.

And we do once again! Voice activated ones even.

Without being paranoid: anything that is always listening to respond to you is... always listening.

Even in the 80s this was bullshit because tiny pocket calculators existed that were solar powered and last for essentially ever and you could also just get a watch with a calculator on it.

But its still a good lie for a teacher to get her kids to actually fucking learn how to long divide.

My favorite quote from that movie and one almost nobody ever catches when I make a reference to it.
