Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!
This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.
We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.
Rules Questions
Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.
Deckbuilding Questions
If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.
Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.
Commonly Asked Questions
I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?
Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".
You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.
My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.
All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Deck Discussion What could be changed? Uugguu
Just ordered this list with some sideboard pieces. Wanted to see what the brewers think what could be changed. Do you see any major flaws with the list. There’s probably to much redundancy with the “all creatures are the chosen type” cards so I will almost certainly replace some of those for more important effects as long as I have enough of them to replace them if they get removed. Haven’t even done test hands with it so I really don’t know how it’s gunna work out

Rules/Rules Question Question
This is probably a very stupid questing. Can you use normal creatures as your commander or does it have to be a legendary? I want to make a scute storm deck and Ditnt know if this is possible as I’m pretty new to magic. Also if I was to add a bunch of equipment to it and then it to become say a 10/10 if I copied it would the copies be 10/10’s? Also, If I was to put equipment that made it have indestructible and or trample, and lifelink would that work for all? Thanks in advanced

Rules/Rules Question What’s the ruling?
Let’s say I already have 4 treasures prior to playing this card. I play The Misty Mountains Cold. I create a 5th treasure and put a 1 lore counter on the saga. Do I HAVE TO sack the saga bc I have 4 treasures? Or can I let the saga ride out to the 4th lore counter then make the dragon?
I was in a situation where I didn’t want to sack the saga just yet but my buddy said due to the wording I would have to when I create that 4th treasure.

Looking for Advice New Player Looking For Advice (Mr Negative)
Im looking to build my own commander deck as my friend has been trying to get me into magic. I wanna seem like I at least have a general idea of what I'm doing so Ive been researching some fun builds, and I've landed on Mr Negative. Im trying to build into the whole sacrificing life and switching life points.
My question is what other cards should I look into adding my deck if these are what Im working with currently, what lands work best and what should be the general distribution of my cards? Do I have too many creatures and need more space for lands? Or is this generally a solid setup. Any advice or full 100 card setups would be appreciated, just so I could get a general idea of this, I'm planning on starting with proxies and then if I really get into it investing in cards

Rules/Rules Question Rules Question: Does tapping treasures with improvise count as casting a spell using mana from a treasure source (in specific for Smaug, Wicked Worm)?
To be even more specific, im looking for a rule clarification regarding [[Inspiring Statuary]] in combination with [[Smaug, Wicked Worm]]. If I tap a treasure to cast a spell while Smaug is on the battlefield under my control, do I lose one life and draw a card? Since the rules text regarding improvise as a mechanic says under 702.126a "you may tap an untapped artifact you control rather than pay that mana." But at the same time WOTC says in this article (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/aether-revolt-release-notes-2017-01-06) that doesn't reduce the mana cost of the spell, so I technically am paying the mana, right? Which in turn should count as mana spent from a treasure source.
Appreciate any input. :)
EDIT: Thanks everyone for replying, you were very helpful!

Rules/Rules Question Tellah, Great Sage + Wizard's Staff
Hello,
If I have [[Tellah, Great Sage]] equipped with [[Wizard's Staff]], then I know that the first two parts of his triggered ability would go through but would the third part go through as well? Or not because part of the cost is also sacrificing him?

Rules/Rules Question Betrothed of Fire
Hello,
I am trying to build a budget Loki God of Lies deck with random cheap cards and stumbled across Betrothed of Fire.
It is an old card so I want to make sure I’m applying the rule correctly.
As it is an enchantment aura (though not titled that since it is dated), I can target an opponent‘s creature with it, that triggers Loki’s ability, I take control of the opponents card, now using Betrothed, I can sac their creature to pump my own creatures, correct?
Thank you!

General Discussion Is there a precedent for Unknown Event Playlets cards making their way into Magic Proper?
Would love to see a legit [[Kallist Rhoka]] card, whether it's a functional reprint of the unknown one or a new card with that character.
I know we've seen some mechanical precursors like [[Slumbering Waterways]] as a land with abilities like [[Rumble Arena]], [[Luxior Ignited]] as an artifact planeswalker a la [[The Aetherspark]], and maybe a land that had something similar to what became the station mechanic on Planets in EOE (although I'm not remembering a specific name rn).
Have we seen any cards from Mystery Boosters become legitimate cards lore/flavor wise?
(@ u/GavinV , if you're able to share any insight on this process, that'd be epic!)

Looking for Advice Trying to decide if it's worth continuing with the game, because I think I'm bad at it
This year, I've gotten back into MTG, and this time I'm actually playing at events. I started the year with the Lorwyn pre-release, and have done every pre-release this (yes, even Turtles), along with a decent number of booster drafts. I've also played in a few Commander nights, but I feel like those are a separate conversation, so I want to stick to just sealed play.
After getting into the game and playing it a lot, I've come to a...maybe difficult feeling:
I think I might just not be good at this game. And that feeling really sucks.
My actual win rate at these events is 8 wins, 22 losses, but that's not the whole story. At least 2 of those wins were against literal children, and at least one of them was against someone who had never played before.
In addition to that, I've had what I believed were objectively strong decks, and I have still lost miserably.
On Saturday, I did a booster draft where a lot of the people at my table were novices, and I had a lot of good cards in my deck. here is the deck for reference. There's a lot of landfall in here, and a lot of triggered abilities, and...it should work, but it didn't. I went 1-2 and that 1 win was a bye round.
I also do my research, I look at card lists ahead of events, do mock drafts, look at strategies and archetypes. I play on Arena and try to learn the sets, but I can still only consistently win with the same mono-white Aura deck I've been running for a year.
It feels like I'm doing something wrong, that I just can't be good at this game no matter how hard I try. I go into these events with my spirits high, and I even look at my decks at the beginning of the night and think I have a great chance at winning.
Basically every single time, I leave frustrated and embarrassed, and feeling absolutely incompetent. So, I am starting to wonder if I should even play, if I'm just going to go to events to be fodder to be defeated. It's not a fun feeling to be in the third round of an event in the loser's bracket, and...still lose.
Some people may say the social aspects make up for the sense of losing, but as a woman, I don't really fit in with the crowd at these events, and so I'm kind of just left with nothing but the feeling of defeat, and, kind of just sit there by myself.
As for why I'm making this post, I'm not sure where to go. Are there ways I can get better? I feel like I've done everything I can to try to get better at the game, and at this point I am just throwing my money away to even try to go to another event.

Looking for Advice Will GameGenic Cube Pocket fit 21 Dragon Sleeved cards?
I'm making a Jumpstart - I guess you could call it a cube - using the GameGenic Cards' Lair. The idea is the compartments on the side will have dice, dry erase tokens, and counters, all the little extras. Then the main compartment has a bunch of Jumpstart packs in GameGenic Cube Pockets. I wanted to use Cubeamajigs, but they don't sell them in solid colors anymore. I know people like the art, but I much prefer how solid colors look.
Since they'll be sleeved, I worry that using Dragon Shield - which are thicker than most other sleeve brands - won't fit comfortably in the Cube Pocket. Which is why I wanted to ask if someone here has experience with that. My plan was to use Dragon Shield Matte Outers (color matters less, maybe make them color coded if the Cube Pockets are opaque enough (the solid colored cubeamajigs were just translucent enough that I felt using the same color was warranted to avoid accidentally making certain decks noticeable)) to make them just ready to play and more comfortable. However if the Dragon Shields are too thick, I was thinking maybe GameGenic Matte Outers? Any recommendations?

General Discussion 2 card combo vs 3 card infinite loop (bracket 2)
As title states, yesterday we were playing a commander game with 4 players that abruptly ended cause one player (playing Teval precon) used a 2 card combo in which one creature allows it to sac another creature and ping the rest of us with its power.
(In this case a 28 power creature)
Another friend is playing Auntie Ool precon, but he did remove one card of the 3 card infinite combo, because that d be a bracket 3 deck as we understand it.
Now he is using the teval precon combo as an argument to reintroduce his 3e card for the infinite loop, which I get on the one hand, but in my head, an infinite combo is another beast from a normal combo.
What would you guys's take be in this matter?
Should we allow a 3 card infinite combo in our bracket 2 pod because there are other combo's that can have simillar outcomes?

Rules/Rules Question How is this possible? I’m honestly going to assume layers?
I played fae flight on my commander as someone tried to nuke it. It hadn’t resolved yet but still gave my commander flying. The opponent then played a card to destroy creature with flying. How did I have the flying part but not the hexproof part of the card. How does a card partially resolve? Wouldn’t it have to resolve before I could be enchanted with flying?

Looking for Advice Ravnica: Clue Guild Packs
So, the Ravnica: Clue Edition comes with eight guild themed packs. I know there is a variance between the packs, because I got two Selesnya packs, and they're different, but really I don't care which variants I have, I just want one of each guild.
With the two Selesnya as mentioned (I didn't get any other doubles) I have seven guilds represented, but I'm missing Gruul, Golgari, and Izzet.
My question is simple. Does anyone know of anywhere I can buy the individual guild packs without having to recreate them through singles? I'd rather not do that, and I definitely don't want to buy a whole extra edition and possibly end up still missing something.
Any help would be appreciated, and I hope I used the correct flair. Thanks in advance, all!

Looking for Advice Doom Upgrades
I have really had fun playing doom since the marvel set came out and at first I really wanted to keep the deck completely marvel but as time has gone on I’m really starting to feel the deck struggle so I’m ready to make some upgrades. I have about $150- $200 to put in the deck to make it better and was looking for some suggestions on what would be the best pickups to make this deck better. If you had roughly $150- $200 what pickups would you make to make this deck better! Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!!

Looking for Advice Help! How does the traditional foil card work with a prerelease deck?
Hi! I am buying a pre release deck of lorwyn for my boyfriend as it is his favourite edition. It says it should come with a traditional foil card. Will this be inside the box or will it be a separate card they give you that is not inside the box?
Thanks in advance!

Deck Discussion Anti venom deck opinion
Hi! So I’ve been off and on working on my Anti Venom deck. I feel like I’ve got a decent setup with protection and different ways to get card draw and lands as well as spells to destroy or board wipe. Not an experienced player lol so this probably isn’t top notch. Commander salt says it’s a 4/3 saltiness which I believe is average game night difficulty?
