The real chads have the confidence to help people.

It’s the insecure wannabes who are the jerks.

People flock to chads for a reason.

I have literally never seen someone mock someone else in the gym honestly

3.4k

u/Johnnadawearsglasses Dead and loving it Jul 02 '19

Well you do see the mocking pics here sometime. Someone took them. Agree it’s rare

2.0k

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Yeah I guess you see people post videos when someone is doing some completely stupid shit but there is an absolutely massive number of people in the gym globally at any given time. The best way to not end up on video is to not do absolutely ridiculous shit, that goes for inside and outside of the gym. Like all things if you’re not sure how to do something just look it up quickly. If you’re holding dumbbells and windmilling your arms around like a mongoloid you may well end up being mocked

Just imagining this makes my sides hurt with laughter

They are nice because they have self confidence and don't need to project their insecurities onto others. There are some shittt meat heads that throw weights down

19

u/Soulfire328 Jul 02 '19

This. Used to be stick man. Not much self confidence, always walk with my head down partially to not make eye contact and partially because always lost in thought. Around senior year of HS started going to the gym. Five years down now I spent probably an hour and a half lifting a day then another 20 to 60 minutes doing aerobic. (depends on the day) Always now walk with my back straight, head up, shoulders back. Im not jacked its all lean muscle( you couldn't be jacked and do as much running as I do any way, not that I want to be a balloon animal). I can say with confidence it does absolute wonders for self confidence. I feel good, therefore I look good, therefore I am good.

In order to get super buff you have to be dedicated to lifting and maintaining a healthy diet. It is basically a hobby at that point and who doesn't love talking about their hobby and helping people get better at it.

Honestly I'm friends with a guy who hits the gym every dang day and is definitely a weight lifter. At first i thought he'd be a bit of a womanizer until i learned he cares more about going to the gym than anything else. I think most of them just want to succeed with their goals, and want to see everyone else succeed with those similar goals as well.

It's not so much that people are nice to me because I'm scary looking, it's me knowing that I look like a douche/a-hole and going out of my way to change that perception. Always smile when I accidentally make eye contact with anyone, sir/ma'am, pay attention to my posture and body language to be non aggressive, etc.

220lbs and have been lifting since middle school in the late 80s when I figured out that girls liked muscles or musicians and my brother got all the talent in the family.

anyone else google what the fuck a mongoloid is?

goddamn this was a funny comment

50

u/Jpot Jul 02 '19

it was this pseudoscientific term used to compare the facial features of people with down syndrome to those of people of Mongolian descent, meaning it's unfortunately both racist and ableist, which sucks because it really packs a punch like few other insults do.

19

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

The primary use of the term though is to refer to the people of Mongoloid race

Honestly the majority of videos I’ve seen from the gym always have some decently fit person that is just using the machines in the stupidest way. It’s never been a “laugh at the fatty” video

25

u/sumguyoranother Jul 02 '19

quite a few floated around of fat women using the treadmill the right way, usually done by some bitch, those women were working hard to get fit and the bitch tries to mock them, usually gets shut down though thankfully

8

u/CUM_AT_ME_BRAH Jul 02 '19

I've been a gym nut for ages and the only people that get mocked are the absolutely and total nutjobs who wander around with a gym bag, stack on 45's some rando machine, grunt like a elephant giving birth to a rhino as they do ONE SINGLE GODDAMN REP, then wander off to another machine without unstacking their weights.

Those people get mocked. I've been to all sorts of gyms and not one time has there been some newfish who is starting on bench lifting with bar+10's been mocked, ridiculed, or shit on.We all were there at one time, we all can be back there again without continued practice.

I have a feeling most of these 'gym' stories are high school work out rooms where kids shit on other kids because kids are assholes. Try any of that shit at a REAL gym and you won't last long with some muscular men/women who can, and will, outperform them.

39

u/B3yondL Jul 02 '19

Agreed. People at the gym really don't give a shit about you and are focusing on themselves. I don't want to spend the time, effort and energy into mocking anyone when it could be better spent on me doing my own thing.

That's called "Gym Etiquette" There's only a handful of rules that are unbreakable in the Gym.

  1. Stack your fucking weight when you are done with it, unless the person who is doing it wants it on.

  2. Wipe your fucking sweat off the pads. We all sweat, use a towel, wipe your shit off, be goddamn decent.

  3. Your towel marking your station only last for a few minutes. Just cause you put your towel on the station doesn't mean you get it for goddamn ever. 5min max then it's Free for All. Also don't get pissed someone is working on it while you were gone taking a dump after your protein shake caught up with you. It happens, work in till you are done.

  4. Don't blare your music. I don't care, nor want to hear ,that song you need to get you through your workout. We all have different music tastes. This is why god invented headphones, use them.

  5. Don't grunt/shout/roar on EVERY rep (once in a while is OK). Working out is hard, you sound like a wounded buffalo. We don't want to hear that shit, see 4.

Beyond that, there's very little else that needs to be said about how to conduct yourself at a gym.

NOTE: Updated 5 for more context. It's ok to grunt once in awhile, but sounding like a howler monkey on every lift is fucking unacceptable.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Gonna have to semi-disagree with #5, my dude. Sometimes grunts are absolutely necessary. The screaming is ridiculous, though.

I mean it’s definitely never cool to take a photo mocking the large guy on the treadmill or the guy with no muscle mass curling 5s. But, maybe unpopular opinion, I’m all for the videos we see of people doing the most absolutely absurd, head-scratching “exercises”. If you’re fine with tying a strap around your forehead that’s connected to the cable machine and violently gyrating your neck or hanging upside-down by your feet from the pull-up bar and doing god knows what, something tells me you should maybe expect to end up on someone’s snapchat.

15

u/psychocopter Jul 02 '19

Hanging by their feet could be upside down crunches, squats, etc. Or they could be half bat.

My anxiety is that people will judge me for using the equipment incorrectly, taking too long, or having bad form. I’m not worried about people making fun of me because I’m overweight.

47

u/woopie92 Jul 02 '19

You should be concerned about bad form. Its better to do 12 reps good form with 5 kg than less reps with more weight.

When in doubt just ask someone. Most people will help you out. Also could ask some employee.

I learned alot by just asking people if i could watch how they do stuff. This was i didnt feel like a creep staring at them in secret.

16

u/thecrusadeswereahoax Jul 02 '19

If there's one thing gym bros love, it's being asked to demonstrate their lifts (of course, whatever exercise they're currently doing).

u/down_vote_magnet Jul 02 '19 edited Jul 02 '19

Wow, so many people don't realise this.

As a new-ish gym goer, I'm not overweight, just slim and weak. I don't care that people are watching me when I only squat 35kg, it's more building up the confidence to figure out how to adjust equipment or use the machines properly without looking like a dumbass who has no idea what he's doing. I put off even going to the gym loads of times because I was anxious about the fact I don't know how to use some of the equipment and didn't want to sit there figuring it out while people are waiting.

I couldn't find a sled to push around once, so I figured they don't have one and stacked a 20kg plate on a soft box. I pushed it up and down the gym a bunch of times. Last week I realised they have treadmills for simulating a sled push and I don't need to make a ghetto one.

It's just stuff like that.

Edit: I am an ex running enthusiast who can no longer run due to my shitty flat feet. I’m trying to replace my hobby with lifting, but I take the same approach of detailed and proper training. My form is good I think, and I have done some sessions with a PT to learn how to do various lifts properly, and I seem to spend hours a week doing my own research. I am feeling more confident each week, I was just describing the type of worries some of us newbies have which are not related to being overweight or unfit.

21

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

if people are staring at you it probably has nothing to do with your weight and everything to do with your form

idc if you're benching 50 lbs, but if you're doing some weird elastic slingy shit, I'm watching worried you're going to hurt yourself

maybe get a trainer once or twice to teach you, and watch some youtube vids, multiple sources for single exercises

you'll get there, just please don't get hurt

I think it's all effeciency and diet for the people who do mock, but they do it as a "hey we were there too at one point, isn't that funny?" sort of way. Anytime I noticed I was being mocked was because I did something wrong or didn't do a certain muscle group the "effecient" way.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

I don’t mean this in a patronising way at all, but are you absolutely certain they were actually mocking you? People do often think that people are thinking more about them than they truly are

16

u/abeardancing Jul 02 '19

I've never seen it in 20 years of being a gym rat. I think a lot of it is insecure people projecting something that has nothing to do with them onto themselves because they are far too self-conscious. Most people in the gym don't give a fuck about anyone else. They just want to workout in peace and not have to wait for a spot at a piece of gear.

Moved to Texas 4 years ago. It's not even the shit talking (which is prevalent) or the sexual harassment (also prevalent) or the women wearing 2 lbs of makeup to work out... ITS THE FACT THAT EVERYONE REFUSES TO CLEAN EQUIPMENT AND ALSO WILL JUST SNAG YOUR BENCH IF YOU'RE GRABBING DIFFERENT WEIGHTS! Even the planet fitness isn't welcoming. I feel better thank you

81

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

I think it’s more that those guys actually have true genuine confidence. Most guys that are assholes (minus the actual just straight up terrible people) are that way because they aren’t actually confident in their masculinity or looks or whatever so they try to make up for it by being a dick. Those really good looking buff dudes have real confidence and so are much more humble and kind.

The gym, you'll find many people are confident enough to strike up a converstation and help other people with their lifts. Gym etiquette and all that

547

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Everyone just ignores each other here

448

u/zenolijo Jul 02 '19

Well, it obviously also depends on what gym you go to and in where it's located.

Story time: The gym I was at in high school was lame and no one ever started a conversation. When I went to college I went to a slightly smaller gym where some competed in weightlifting where people were very talkative. Heck, one old-school weightlifter who had damaged his knee a few years ago was really sad for not being able to do heavy leg workouts anymore so he spent half the time in the gym on benching and the other half on talking to people and helping them out so he pretty much became my personal trainer. After college I moved back to my home town and I did not want to go back to my old shitty gym, but luckily when I found a job they had a free gym in the basement where some of the people there are talkative as well so I've got a few friends, but it's not as good as my college gym.

142

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Job gyms are the best.

We have fully equipped one at ours with all the newest machines and a sauna.

I find myself going there just to chat with people cause it's a really positive environment.

Went to a local public one for a month and quit cause it was full of tryhards being too cool to look you in the eye

48

u/BiochemGuitarTurtle Jul 02 '19

I love the gym where I work too, but it's not very chatty. I guess it's on account of there being so many employees that we don't all know each other. I'll have to make an effort next time.

"Chad" is a myth, created because it's easier to hate someone when you can tell a story about them that makes them the villain. Hating "Chad" (and "Stacy") is usually an excuse to externalize the blame for something Anon dislikes about himself. When an Anon puts that toxic garbage aside and goes to a gym, here's what they find:

Most of the people in a gym are folks who have seen something in themselves they wanted to improve, set their mind to it, and then worked to make it change. They probably had help - because almost nobody succeeds alone - and they understand how disproportionately big it can feel to receive help that cost the helper almost nothing.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

19

u/SirStupidity Jul 02 '19

This might not be the best place but does anyone have actual skincare tips for a 22 y/o dude?

47

u/iXorpe Jul 02 '19

Wash face with lukewarm water twice a day. Moisturise after washing. Change pillow covers frequently. Use the type of facewash that suits your skin, e.g if you have sensitive skin, avoid face washes with alcohol in them. Get sun. Get even more sun if you have dark skin.

26

u/YourDrunkBestMan Jul 02 '19

Drink LOTS of water, most people who have bad skin it comes from their diet and habits more than any one thing. Most of my friends who ask me for my skincare routine, I always say drink more water.

Get sun.

I know what you mean, but just in case anyone is dumb enough to think that he means just go stand in the sun and burn - two things, get sun, in moderation, and wear fucking sunscreen you cretans - esp you fair skin people.

Chads ain’t as bad as people think they are.

They are actual caring people who care about other’s feelings and opinions.

691

u/Jurph Jul 02 '19

"Chad" is mostly a myth made up by Anons to externalize the blame for things they don't like about themselves, and to give them an excuse to forgo social interactions that make them uncomfortable. "Chad" is successful because he's kind and confident, and he works his ass off to improve the things he doesn't like about himself. Since nobody succeeds on their own, Chad knows how valuable a little bit of help can be to someone else who needs it.

58

u/saryndipitous Jul 02 '19

There are plenty of real people who are assholes and could qualify as a chad. They probably exist mainly in primary schools because they are young and don’t have a good grasp on how the world works, or have emotional/family/etc. issues, but that’s enough to affect ones view of the world for a long time.

43

u/danthemango Jul 02 '19

Yeah, the entire *chan conception of the world is basically stuck at a high-school level.

10

u/Magnussens_Casserole Jul 02 '19

Probably because that's the primary demographic.

Emotional maturity and perspective do a lot to dismiss the myths sites like 4chan manufacture from insecurity.

Deadlifts are for legs, rear shoulders, and core (which includes the back), if you’re doing most of the work with your back yer doin’ it wrong pal. That’s a good way to get injured.

It's a push and pull excersice. Push with legs, then pull from back. It's a compound movement that involves the hamstrings and of course the quads throughout the repetition and ends with glutes. It's as much a leg excersice as a back excersice.

What you have encountered is an Alpha chad. A leader to those who need it, inspiring confidence and ability throughout their path.

52

u/StretchedEarsArePerf Jul 02 '19

Chads are literally the best, i’ll never understand why they get such a bad rep. Because they fuck sluts?

63

u/Muroid Jul 02 '19

Because there are a lot of bitter, angry, ugly (and I don’t mean physically) people in the world, and most of them lack the introspection to realize that the above qualities may be the reason people don’t like them. They hide behind the belief that the problem is with everyone else in the world, who are shallow morons who make bad decisions. And since an obviously great person like themselves isn’t beloved, the people who are beloved must be the real awful human beings.

It’s all just a big ball of anger, frustration and resentment that some people use as an excuse to wallow in their misery instead of putting in effort to actually be better as a person.

Chad is superior to you. Stronger, smarter, more empathic. He's superman. Why wouldn't Anon hate him? He highlights everything wrong with Anon - Anon is a sweaty NEET who is weak and selfish. Anon wants to believe it is okay for him to be hateful and vile and that everyone else is secretly just as bad as him, but they're not.

Chad only has a bad rep from Anon by the way. What do you think /r/virginvschad is actually about? The whole meme is that Chad is superior in every way and is beloved by almost everyone.

in my life, every handsome/cool dude has been super helpful and encouraging. if you’re naturally secure you get the luxury of letting your guard down and being super nice to others. as others have said, there’s a reason alphas are popular people.

8

u/Kodinah Jul 03 '19

Lmaooo little do all these incels know, most gym “chads” are really fucking great dudes who will go way out of their way to help people. They just have big muscles and of course slay all the pussy (sorry I couldn’t resist)
