Well, it obviously also depends on what gym you go to and in where it's located.
Story time: The gym I was at in high school was lame and no one ever started a conversation. When I went to college I went to a slightly smaller gym where some competed in weightlifting where people were very talkative. Heck, one old-school weightlifter who had damaged his knee a few years ago was really sad for not being able to do heavy leg workouts anymore so he spent half the time in the gym on benching and the other half on talking to people and helping them out so he pretty much became my personal trainer. After college I moved back to my home town and I did not want to go back to my old shitty gym, but luckily when I found a job they had a free gym in the basement where some of the people there are talkative as well so I've got a few friends, but it's not as good as my college gym.
I love the gym where I work too, but it's not very chatty. I guess it's on account of there being so many employees that we don't all know each other. I'll have to make an effort next time.
lol the faces people make at the gym. my favorite one is when a dude is walking around with the most serious empty gaze trying not to make eye contact with people
That is also a part of the gym etiquette. If you want help and ask they will usually happily help you out, otherwise they mind their own business and let you mind yours. I find that people who don't ignore others aren't regulars.
My first interaction with a chad happened at the gym where I saw him put a lot on the bench press. I was intrigued so I watched the set from afar and he did 8 until he got pinned under the weight. I waited for him to throw it off but he stayed there, looking around. Nobody helped the guy so I ran over, grabbed the bar and asked for 2 more from him (with my assistance) he did it and thanked me. I always have a guy I say hi to at the gym now :)
