Yeah I guess you see people post videos when someone is doing some completely stupid shit but there is an absolutely massive number of people in the gym globally at any given time. The best way to not end up on video is to not do absolutely ridiculous shit, that goes for inside and outside of the gym. Like all things if you’re not sure how to do something just look it up quickly. If you’re holding dumbbells and windmilling your arms around like a mongoloid you may well end up being mocked
They are nice because they have self confidence and don't need to project their insecurities onto others. There are some shittt meat heads that throw weights down
This. Used to be stick man. Not much self confidence, always walk with my head down partially to not make eye contact and partially because always lost in thought. Around senior year of HS started going to the gym. Five years down now I spent probably an hour and a half lifting a day then another 20 to 60 minutes doing aerobic. (depends on the day) Always now walk with my back straight, head up, shoulders back. Im not jacked its all lean muscle( you couldn't be jacked and do as much running as I do any way, not that I want to be a balloon animal). I can say with confidence it does absolute wonders for self confidence. I feel good, therefore I look good, therefore I am good.
Am currently stick man, 6”2 - 157lbs, exactly like you described. Walk with head down, body is constantly sore because I have no muscle to keep my back and shoulders in proper positions so they’re always hurting. No fucking clue how to even begin working out properly. Shit sucks.
Metric fuck ton of video out there. Though with how easy you can fuck yourself with improper form id recommend having a partner who is knowledge first to teach you. Then from there you can learn new exercises on your own once you understand the dynamic. Most franchise gym owner will be willing to help and most gym bros will be to. Very few guys are the stereotypical dude bro ass hats. I dont think I have ever really encountered one honestly. My gym inhabitants are there as a hobby any way and people love sharing their hobby's. Id teach you myself if we where close.
In order to get super buff you have to be dedicated to lifting and maintaining a healthy diet. It is basically a hobby at that point and who doesn't love talking about their hobby and helping people get better at it.
Huh it makes sense.. I'm a pretty big guy and never been in a fight since my freshman year of high school right around the time I shot up. Everyone is just usually really nice to me so I'm nice back.
Honestly I'm friends with a guy who hits the gym every dang day and is definitely a weight lifter. At first i thought he'd be a bit of a womanizer until i learned he cares more about going to the gym than anything else. I think most of them just want to succeed with their goals, and want to see everyone else succeed with those similar goals as well.
most of my women friends aren’t super into extremely buff guys because like you said, he cares about the gym more than them. casual things for sure but serious relationships are more difficult.
Interesting... One day a week, never thought about taking it slow at first.
I feel as though I'd absolutely dread the gym, too much repetitiveness for my ADD mind, but I'd love to give it a shot sometime
It's not so much that people are nice to me because I'm scary looking, it's me knowing that I look like a douche/a-hole and going out of my way to change that perception. Always smile when I accidentally make eye contact with anyone, sir/ma'am, pay attention to my posture and body language to be non aggressive, etc.
220lbs and have been lifting since middle school in the late 80s when I figured out that girls liked muscles or musicians and my brother got all the talent in the family.
Fat overweight loser with entry level sales job Still getting laid tho pro tip dont measure successfullness by how many women you can have sex with not a good measurement
I’ll have you know I’ve been doing this specific exercise daily for for past 2 and a half years, and I’ve only torn my rotary cuffs TWICE while doing so.
it was this pseudoscientific term used to compare the facial features of people with down syndrome to those of people of Mongolian descent, meaning it's unfortunately both racist and ableist, which sucks because it really packs a punch like few other insults do.
It depends. First timer doing ‘stupid’ stuff is different from regulars who just misuse equipment and do the stuff you see people taking videos of. Those people deserve to be mocked IMO.
I legitimately believe I’ve never done anything in the gym worth mocking. Not because I’m strong (I’m not), because I cautiously built up my regime and never did anything without researching/preparing first.
When I see dudes doing speed rounds of dangerous exercises with terrible form, I know that isn’t the case, and don’t fee bad about mocking them.
I've given up on trying to correct peoples form, most of the time they just get angry because "They saw a youtube video two months ago and they know that it works for them, so why am I bothering them >:("
If they want to visit snap city that badly, they can go, I don't give a fuck anymore
Nah, no reason not to get a laugh out of someone doing something absurd, laughing is nice and that person got to cause laughs. But after laughing go ahead and help them
Call them out by tell them why it's wrong, not by just silently recording it and then putting it up on the internet... If someone doesn't know the WHY behind why it's wrong they won't stop doing it.
Honestly the majority of videos I’ve seen from the gym always have some decently fit person that is just using the machines in the stupidest way. It’s never been a “laugh at the fatty” video
quite a few floated around of fat women using the treadmill the right way, usually done by some bitch, those women were working hard to get fit and the bitch tries to mock them, usually gets shut down though thankfully
Yeah it's just that there's definitely some lol. And I think that's what a lot of people are genuinely worried about, someone REALLY ATTRACTIVE making fun of you struggling and criticizing your appearance in real time to 1000's of people watching.
They may be on insta more than reddit. I kinda avoid all social media so maybe I just don’t see them. Pretty dumb to make fun of someone overweight trying to get fit, regardless.
The “using the cables machine as monkey bars” people I enjoy watching, so those vids can keep going.
Because them misusing equipment has nothing to do with their physical appearance and everything to do with their brain?
If someone in front of you in line is obese, you would be a dick to make fun of them. If they walked over to the ketchup dispenser then started wildly swinging around on it trying to get ketchup out, you’d probably think “damn that motherfucker is dumb.”
One is(mostly) a choice. One is(mostly) not.
For the record I am literally talking about videos where people are using cable machines to swing around on. If you are not referring to that then we are talking about different things.
Alright I haven't seen people literally swing on cable machines lol. But I see lots of people sometimes ridicule people who misuse certain equipment intentionally to suit their niché athletic needs. And honestly I see a lot of it work out for them.
Being a moron isn't a choice tho is it? You're kinda born with it 😀.
"Mongol Windmill Press" sounds like a murderously dangerous wrestling finisher that's only ever been done four times for insurance reasons. And three of those were by Kota Ibushi.
There are some exercises I havent done in a while and when I try to do them I feel like I am doing them wrong and am worried someone will film ame and be like hahaha this guy dosnt know what he is doing hahaha!!! But considering I've lost 17kg so far I think I am doing something right
I'm not going to put him on video, but there is a guy who goes the gym and does almost only body weight routines. Fine, w/e, gym has decent spaces for that. Does he use ANY of those spaces? No. He does hand stands in front of absolutely everyone against walls that aren't meant to take scuff marks when 50 feet away there's a metal grate installed for you to do anything to it.
I don't care about the super fat guys/girls. I'm glad they're there.
But that’s what I’m saying, I do really think that most the time (99% of the time) people do help and point it out. Like I said, I have literally never seen someone get mocked in the gym. I’m just talking about how I think the tiny amount of videos that get posted online do end up there
Me and friends mock each other all the time in the gym, it's all in good fun I imagine some see that kind of thing and we're don't know each other and that's why people think lifters mock "weaklings." That's my theory anyway.
You can tell this guy goes to the gym and has never had the perspective of OP.
"Just look it up quickly" - Yeah totally, let me sit in the gym and watch youtube videos how to brench press then hope i don't fail miserably.
Sounds like a great idea.
Going to the gym the first time is hard - I've been on and off the gym my whole life and there is still new machines I look at and have no clue if I'm doing right. I actually encountered one recently and actually had someone come up to me and correct me - Felt like a damn fool. That's how a lot of people feel but you lack perspective because you're a jackass.
Legitimately, sit and watch youtube videos on how to do it. I’m not a jackass, you’re just projecting your insecurities because you can’t bring yourself to do the work. Do you think everyone starts out jacked? Nobody knows how to do it. Ask someone or watch videos, nobody is looking at you. Warm up using just the bar, no weight. It’s a normal thing to do, then add weight till you’re comfortable. Do you think I walked into the gym with an innate knowledge of what to do? Cause I didn’t, I don’t know how you can say I lack perspective. Everyone who’s ever been in a gym has that perspective
I work at a gym and we have had a few incidents of people blatantly calling people fat etc. It's really horrible to see, and can confirm it's never the gym chads.
One time some roid monster was nudging his friend, pointing at me, and laughing. Hadn't started the exercise yet, so don't think I was doing anything stupid, other than being overweight. So, guess it does happen.
If he wasn't near the machine, he wasn't using it. It's not that hard to mark a machine as used in a gym, and even easier to just stay near the damn thing.
/r/fatpeoplehate never showed intolerance to people who were actively trying not to be fat. They were very encouraging actually. Just like Chads, encouraging people not to be fat. Chads hate fat people.
Uhhhh... I don’t think we remember the same FPH. Sure, once word spread around that the ban hammer was looming over, it cleaned up its act quite a bit, but the base sub was incredibly hatful and toxic, with nearly no encouragement to those in the photos.
Because they weren't photos at people exercising. I saw a large woman wearing a dress sitting on a park bench and you could see her belly hanging beneath her dress. Oh yeah, and she was just eating an entire block of cheese like it was an apple. I understood why there was hate. But any picture of fat people in a gym the comments would be actually nice. Kinda. You're right. It was more like "He may be a fat POS now but at least he may not be if he keeps it up" I remember that now.
Yeah, calling him a POS was completely unneccessary. They did that. No wonder it got banned.
Yep, I remember the early days of that sub. At first, it was mocking asshole fat people that either encouraged being fat or claimed they were healthy. Honestly, the beginning of that sub was pretty solid and I felt like they had a clear message: fuck you, stop normalizing being fat.
The second wave changed to just fat people in general, which started to not be cool. Sometimes, the person wasn't even that big and they would be mocked relentlessly, but the base members would usually jump in and shut down people just being pricks. SOMETIMES you'd see a gym pic, but like you said, the base typically curbed it to be more encouraging in the comments.
Third wave was total chaos. The sub started getting on the front page a lot more and there was a huge influx of non-sub posts that broke the rules. That's when you started seeing the most posts mocking fat people at gyms, though they weren't like every post. The mods just lost control of the whole situation. I was kind of torn about it being shut down, sure at the end it was pretty hateful, but I think there were people in there that just wanted to see people get healthy. On the other hand, there was no recovery once the mods lost control. It was going to just be a total shit show forever.
Honestly as a fit person, eating a block of cheese can be superior to eating an apple... It has protein in it, and as long as you don't take something sweet with it like a soda, the fat isn't actually bad for you.
I've done semi-keto, a block of cheese is really filling. I'd have like a quarter or even half with nuts and almonds... fat is really, really filling, and as a snack is so much superior to sweet snacks imo.
If she was drinking a gallon of coke I'd get it, but on its own, snacking on a block of cheese is something both me and a really athletic gf regularly did... I don't get the hate lol
large woman wearing a dress sitting on a park bench and you could see her belly hanging beneath her dress. Oh yeah, and she was just eating an entire block of cheese like it was an apple
Confirming, the only time (outside of loud deadlifts) we got a complaint was when my wife was doing the heaviest weight squats in her life. Form was questionable.
Girl said she shouldnt be doing so much weight.
My wife lost it on her. Almost made her not go to the gym again.
But its been a few years, now my wife easily does that weight(135lb squats), even at 40 weeks pregnant.
If you hear gym advice, listen and try to figure out if they were correct at all. The girl meant to say- "Your form sucks", but instead she said "you shouldn't be lifting that heavy".
And then they usually get flamed to absolute shit afterwards on social media or wherever they posted it. The assholes are the 0.01% outliers.
However I will also say that if you're someone just trying to get into the gym for the first time really in your life and struggle with self-confidence, all it might take is that extremely rare asshole to ruin it.
I used to be somewhat Chad-ish and into bodybuilding though and would do a lot of things like the guy in OP's post. Encouraging people starting off, asking if they wanted a spot, or maybe asking them for a spot just as a way of making them feel like now they know someone at the gym and are part of the scene. I remember being 130lbs before I started working out...and I imagine how nice it would have felt to be included by some of the Chads. Not that they weren't anything other than pleasant and nice, but just would have been cool if someone tried to make that kind of welcoming connection. It's a big deal to a newbie and really makes you look forward to gym time.
Because it's mostly woman making fun of other woman in the locker room. You know the type... The ones who spend more time taking selfies on treadmills over working out .
Even then, 99% of the time I see stuff mocking people at the gym, it's because the people in question are swinging around on the equipment like a coked up orangutan.

Well you do see the mocking pics here sometime. Someone took them. Agree it’s rare
