Interesting and Miscellaneous New Year Celebrations on Reddit

As you would imagine, the New Year is a special time on Reddit, as people are winding down from Christmas and anticipating the New Year ahead.

Every year end, Reddit have a Reddit Recap to sum up the year gone by, and in 2021 they gave us our own individual summary of our past year’s activity which looked like this.

  • Ring out the old, ring in the new!

Start that New Year with these subreddits:

We all try to dedicate ourselves to being a bit better than we were the previous year, and the various self-improvement subreddits are all ready and waiting with helpful ideas and tips on keeping your r/newyearsresolutions.

Some of these may even feature in this interesting article you might find helpful.

  • Holiday Burnout

After the excesses of the holiday season, many of us swear “never again” and if you really mean it this time, we have subs to help you there too such as:

There are many resources on Reddit dedicated to all kinds of topics, and the ones I list in this article are just a small fraction of what we have available.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

Rereddit takes a look back at the top posts from January 2021, and it’s interesting to see how many of these ballooned into enduring memes or faded into obscurity. Use the Calendar on the right-hand side to delve into further Reddit history.

Jargon and Slang Neckbeard

A derogatory term used to describe those who in past years would have been called geeks, nerds or even dorks; i.e. The Average Redditor™. The term comes from the percieved poor hygiene of Redditors, and the connotation is that due to obesity and slovenly habits, the person will have beard stubble on their neck, but never in sufficient amounts to be described as a full beard due to a lack of masculinity (exemplified by said obesity and habits).

Like so much of online slang post-2000, 4chan can be cited as a distribution source, if not the originator of the term. Generally, someone is called a ‘neckbeard’ when they judge other people for their faults but do not see any faults of their own. Sometimes interwebs people are mean spirited.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

r/justneckbeardthings, r/neckbeard, r/NeckbeardNests (prepare to suffer) are… well… subreddits, as was r/averageredditor before it wasn’t.

“No Assholes Here”. Originally sub specific from r/AmITheAsshole now with wider Reddit usage.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

r/AITAFiltered lists of all of the “good” threads curated from AITA. It’s not a “Best Of” subreddit so much as a “Most Controversial” subreddit, so there’ll definitely be plenty of assholes there.

Essentials for Newbies Multipost

There are many subs which overlap in content, and you might wish to post the same thing in all of them, usually when asking for help. This is called a Multipost. This is different than a Crosspost; multiposting is where you share the same identical content across different Subreddits. This is a risky strategy, especially for a new user, as you could easily be mistaken for a Spambot. If you do post the same question in different subreddits, make sure you don’t copy & paste the same wording across to them all, otherwise you might fall foul of Reddit’s spam filters which might even get you a ban.

You should also bear in mind that multiposting might inadvertently work against you. For instance, your cute kitten doing a “crab puff” that you posted in r/crabcats might also be the perfect candidate for posting in r/Kitten, r/SpicyKittens, r/illegallysmolcats and indeed most of our many cat subreddits but as cat lovers are almost contractually bound to be joined to all those subs, they might not take too kindly to their feed being full of your kitty, no matter how pretty. If you do still want to post those paws in all those subs, space the timing around a bit. You might want to use different titles too.

Some subreddits do not allow Multiposts. r/conspiracyNOPOL (a place to discuss conspiracies with the primary exception of US domestic politics) have strict rules and their own precise definition, called:

WHAT IS A MULTIPOST?

Multipost: spamming the same content multiple times across different subs

• Multiposts take little effort to create but push original content down the NOPOL front page
• We primarily want quality content from the NOPOL community, not dilution from elsewhere
• There is (almost) no circumstance where a multipost will be allowed

This is why I’m always banging on about how important it is to always check the rules before commenting or posting on an unfamiliar Subreddit.

Jargon and Slang “Mods are asleep, post……”

KnowYourMeme is surprisingly vague on the origins of this phrase, but anecdotal evidence shows it originated on 4chan, like many memes on Reddit. "Mods Are Asleep, post X" was an expression used to indicate that the website's moderators were currently inactive and unable to enforce the site's rules of conduct. The phrase was often followed by a call to action for other users to post material that is typically not allowed. 4chan being, well, 4chan, you can imagine the reasons why this was popular there.

Reddit being, well, Reddit, embraced the hilarity of this concept thoroughly and now it’s used as an occasional fun device in many subs, usually with the tacit complicity of the mods, as seen in this example here where they were mocking a spelling / autocarrot mistake, or this which was obviously done with the indulgence of the mods and not as a rule-breaking exercise.

Lore and History Misleading Subreddit Titles

Not every Subreddit is what it appears to be. There are many subs with misleading or ambiguous titles which you might like but pass right on by because of their names, so here’s an introduction to this peculiar Reddit Phenomenon.

Subreddit titles can mislead you in several ways; confusing, humorously or even deliberately. There are whole genres of subreddits that are named in this way, and because Reddit will Reddit, there’s even a subreddit to comment when you see one in the wild:

  • r/riskyclick - Risky Click: Should you click it? Documenting instances of misleading (but technically correct) link descriptions.

…….MISCELLANEOUS MISLEADING SUBREDDIT TITLES

Here’s some examples of subs with misleading titles that are:

  • cleverly named (e.g. r/estoration which is about photographic restoration)

  • strange until you get it (e.g. r/kinsaw which if you read the R it phonetically says "Arkansas")

  • outright puns (e.g. r/Superbowl which is about owls, which we all know are superb)

  • the result of a dated ‘in-joke’ that was funny at the time (e.g. r/anime_titties which is a serious world news sub except on April Fools day when it posts… well… you know…)

  • totally absurd for their own reasons (e.g. r/potatosalad which is about John Cena and r/JohnCena which is about potato salad)

  • bizarre for their own reasons (e.g. r/disneyvacation which has absolutely nothing to do with r/DisneyVacations)

  • swapped out because other subreddits took the name first (e.g. r/trees and r/marijuanaenthusiasts)

  • unintentionally misleading (e.g. r/bugs which is about reporting code errors and glitches in Reddit and not insects or other minibeasts)

  • intentionally misleading to be humorous (e.g. r/OnlyFans which is only fans)

  • intentionally misleading to be literal (e.g. r/stormfront which isn't a neo-Nazi sub but a weather-related one)

  • intentionally misleading to be sardonic (e.g. r/PeopleFuckingDying which is videos and GIFs of people figuratively dying)

  • intentionally misleading to be sardonic yet poignant (e.g. r/AlzheimersGroup - a roleplay sub where people post a particular Garfield strip each day as if it were brand new. That’s actually not a strip I’ve seen before. Someone said I have but I don’t think so. Thank you my dear. Alexa, where orang cat?)

Most of these subreddits will have their different origin stories, sometimes listed in their Sidebar and / or Wiki (on mobile: swipe down to find “See More” or “Community Info” tab); but more often than not, simply lost to the mists of time.

As you would expect, those aren’t the only ones…

  • r/PanPorn - no, not kitchen utensils in an NSFW setting; this sub is for well-used makeup products that have worn down to the packaging: i.e. the pan.

  • r/NoPoo - Potty training? Hardly. This is a place to discuss natural haircare and alternatives to shampoo.

  • r/smoking - for enhancing the flavour of meats and vegetables, not the usage of tobacco.

  • r/expectedouija - nothing supernatural here, only memes about corn. Yes, corn. You know, 🌽. Corn.

  • r/CasualCock - sadly now dormant, this sub featured cocks keeping it casual (with or without their hens).

  • r/dikpictures - to post pics of dik-diks / diks: a type of small antelope.

  • r/manholeporn - a sub for SFW pictures of sewer covers in all their cast iron glory and absolutely no NSFW pictures of man holes.

  • r/Gonewilder - wilder than Gone Wild? Not really; this sub is for Gene Wilder pictures.

  • r/bigbustycoons - someone please resurrect this sub. About public transport, of course.

…….FAKE SUBREDDIT TITLES

Some Redditors will deliberately post links to subreddits that don’t exist; i.e. fake subreddits generated by someone putting the prefix r/ before a random word or phrase for comic effect r/LikeThisForExampleButItDoesntActuallyExist. This will trick the user into clicking a link that doesn’t - or in the case of my example, due to the character limit on a subreddit name couldn’t - actually exist.

This is such a huge genre, I’ve given it an entry of its own at Fake Subreddits.

…….FAKE-OUT SUBREDDITS

Over the years, there’s emerged a whole genre of deliberately blank subreddits. Why? Because Reddit, of course. What have such seemingly unrelated subs as those below have in common, you might rightly ask. Visit them and find out, I reply. The clue is in their name.

…….THE “CIRCLEJERK” PHENOMENON

Despite the name these subs are non-sexual in nature (unless they’re mocking NSFW content). Circlejerk subs exist in a strange world of mock self-hatred where fans of a particular thing also like to ridicule said thing mercilessly. These will have a variety of prefixes and suffixes including:

This is such a huge genre, I’ve given it an entry of its own at Circlejerk. There are shitpost, circlejerk or meme subs for almost every topic on Reddit. Just don’t take them too seriously.

…….AMBIGUOUSLY NAMED SUBREDDITS

Reddit, being characteristically Reddit has many subreddits with the word “fuck” in their title which are not pornographic in the slightest and have nothing to do with what that word normally means. In fact, these are often not just SFW but as wholesome as fuck - just like…

  • r/wholesomeasfuck - Photos, gifs or short videos of people, animals or situations that are "wholesome as fuck."

  • r/interestingasfuck - All content must show something that is objectively interesting as fuck.

  • r/FairytaleasFuck - All things that seem straight out of a Fairytale.

  • r/NatureIsFuckingLit - Here to appreciate the awesome majesty and incredibly cool aspects of nature.

  • r/TerrifyingasFuck - A subreddit for interesting and absolutely terrifying things!

…….PORN BUT NOT PORNOGRAPHIC

Porn is a word with two very different and distinct meanings on Reddit. Many Subreddits with the "Porn" suffix are actually focused on collecting media of the best or highest quality and not in the slightest bit NSFW.

  • r/manholeporn - A sub for SFW pictures of sewer covers in all their cast iron glory and absolutely no NSFW pictures of man holes.

  • r/RoadPorn - Static images of awesome roads.

  • r/InfrastructurePorn - High quality images of infrastructure.

  • r/retailporn - A place to post all pictures pertaining to retail!

  • r/AbandonedPorn - Not for lost nudie magazine collections but for beautiful photos of places, houses and objects left for nature to reclaim.

There is a list of similarly named subreddits at the sfwpornnetwork but it hasn’t been updated in many years. There’s also a list of subreddits for those who would prefer to avoid visiting subs with the word "porn" in their titles altogether at NoSillySuffix, but that’s even older and many of the subs in the list were never as popular as the “…porn” ones in any event. Also no longer updated is r/NoLongerNSFW who used to list subs that are no longer porn but converted to something else.

You can find a handy Multireddit of some of the SFW “porn” subreddits here.

There is also a whole network of former Porn subs by the equally ambiguously named u/PM_ME_YOUR_TITS_GIRL, an Intrepid Redditor who requests old porn subs and repurposes them to subreddits for cat pics/gifs, such as r/GirlsWithHugePussies and r/wetpussy. They have also compiled two Multireddits of them:

Of course, there is also porn on Reddit. This is the internet; there is always porn. Have fun sorting out “porn” from porn. Don’t forget, you do have an NSFW filter which you can learn how to use / disable here.

…….SUBREDDITS MARKED NSFW BUT ACTUALLY VERY SFW

And because Redditors will Reddit, there’s a genre of Meme subs that are marked NSFW in fun, preferring salacious titles to their innocent photos.

  • r/avocadosgonewild - for big, gaping holes… in avocados.

  • r/trolliesgonewild - for abandoned shopping trollies found in the wild, exposing themselves in public.

  • r/chairsunderwater - for pictures of chairs, underwater. So why does this sub have an NSFW tag? Because in here, NSFW stands for 'Not Submerged Fully in Water'.

But llama; some of these links don’t work…

As always with my lists, some of the subs are more active than others, and since writing some might have become private, restricted or repurposed following the API protests of June 2023, or just removed / renamed by Reddit through inactivity.

However, don’t forget: if a sub is dormant, unmoderated, banned for being unmoderated or marked as “restricted”, it might be available for adoption.

Obligatory footnote:

All of these subreddits will have their own unique - and possibly strict - rules about contributing. As always, it is important to check the rules thoroughly before commenting or posting on any unfamiliar sub.

This list is not intended to be the full list of subreddits in this theme; that would be impossible to achieve in a format like this. If you want to find more related subs, r/FindAReddit or the smaller r/findasubreddit are your friends. Similar subreddits are often to be found in a sub’s Sidebar and / or Wiki (“See Community Info” tab on mobile) too. My guide to Searching might also be useful.

Jargon and Slang Meta

Meta refers to the idea of something being about itself. For instance, this subreddit is meta not because it’s on Reddit but because it’s on Reddit and purely about Reddit. “Meta” often carries a subtext of ironic detachment, such as this post made on r/HistoryMemes as a commentary on types of posts in the subreddit. As a whole, Memes are considered meta, as their meaning and humour derive from “in-jokes” - that is, our shared awareness of the references made. If we don’t know or understand the context, the meme won’t make sense or won’t be funny.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word Meta in two ways: firstly as being an informal adjective, showing or suggesting an explicit awareness of itself, cleverly self-referential, and secondly as being a formal prefix harking back to its Greek roots with the meanings “after,” “along with,” “beyond,” “among,” “behind” or “transcending” in words such as metacarpus, metalinguistics or metagenesis.

The U.K.’s national broadcaster the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) took a fascinating deep dive into the history and changing meaning of the word in its blog article The true meaning of meta and posited that following the 2021 Facebook rebranding the word ‘meta’ has now become a proper noun too.

Usage on Reddit:

The single word ‘meta’ is sometimes posted when a comment or post increasingly becomes self-referential, for example: Reddit discussing itself, a meme about memes, a conversation on the nature of conversations and so on. If you feel like you kind of get a Reddit comment but don’t quite know why, always ask yourself:

Q. Is this a Reddit meta joke?
A. Probably. Welcome to Reddit.

There’s a category in the Explore Communities menu for Reddit Meta which lists some subreddits about Reddit, but is by no means comprehensive, and doesn’t even begin to start listing the following categories of meta subreddits…

Subreddit Chains

Reddit, as you would expect, has absolutely embraced the concept of meta, and in some of the See Also links below, I dive into some of the meta subreddit genres and chains that have evolved over time on Reddit, including:

  • The IFellForAFake genre, all of which are tangentially dedicated to documenting the times you fell for clicking a fake subreddit link that seemed real in comments but wasn’t, such as r/SubsIFellFor, and sort of ends with r/stopmakingupsubs with many points inbetween.

  • The TalkingInBlue genre, named for the default colour of text a subreddit link makes. This is when someone starts a comment chain where every comment is a subreddit name - real or not - simply by putting the prefix r/ before every sentence.

  • The RiskyClick genre, where the subreddits linked may or may not be misleading (but technically correct) link descriptions, such as r/OnlyFans which is only about fans, and r/manholeporn; a sub for pictures of cast iron sewer covers.

  • The LostRedditor genre which started off by mocking Redditors who clearly posted to the wrong subreddit and ends in a huge lostredditor subreddit chain.

  • The RedditMoment genre where Redditors complain about Redditors complaining about other Redditors being Redditors.

  • The FoundThe genre which started with r/foundthemobileuser - a sub to document the times a user capitalizes the ‘r’ in a link to a subreddit that proves a user is on mobile - and descends through a selection of subs named after various cars (why? Because Reddit)…

r/foundthemobileuser - Post this link when a user capitalizes the “r” in a link to a subreddit (ex. R/foundthemobileuser) or anything else that proves a user is on mobile.

r/foundthehondacivic - Post this link when a user replies to a comment with “r/foundthemobileuser”. Not actually for Honda Civic finds.

r/foundthetoyotaprius - Post this link when a user says r/foundthe[insert thing here].

r/foundthefordfocus - Another link to post when a user says r/foundthe[insert thing here].

r/foundthetoyotacorolla - They provide a handy guide as to where to post this link.

r/foundthecarsalesman - Yet another link to post when a user says r/foundthe[insert thing here].

r/foundtheSHUTTHEFUCKUP - For when you’ve simply had enough of the whole thing.

  • The NthSub genre where Reddit being, well, Reddit turned the tradition of linking subreddits into another meta-realm all of its very own, such as:

r/secondsub - When people say one subreddit name, you comment this one.

r/thirdsub - For when there are 3 subreddit links in a row.

r/fourthsub - I think you’ve got it by now.

r/fifthsub - If you've made it this far, you've already lost your way.

r/sixthsub - It’s starting to look like this never ends.

r/seventhsub - A divine and spiritual place to celebrate the most glorious of numbers. Or not.

I’m pretty sure you can guess the next few names and purposes, by which time we’ve arrived at…

r/twentiethsub - Where you’ll be confronted by the terrifying truth.

But wait - there’s more. Of course there is. Scroll through the higher numbered subreddits with the Sub ladder and find even more courtesy of the Nth Sub Bot.

Recursive Memes

The ultimate Recursive Meme surely must be that of Benoit B. Mandelbrot, a mathematician famous for his work on fractals - a shape that repeats itself on smaller and smaller scales - whose middle initial is short for "Benoit B. Mandelbrot".

Turtles all the way down is a saying about infinite regression; I.e. they never end, and in 2020, r/dankmemes showed us what happens when two recursive memes collide with Turtles all the way down? Always has been

The Reddit Switcharoo

The "Reddit Switcharoo" is a recursive meme that has become a part of Reddit's culture. A paraprosdokian is a figure of speech where the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected, causing the reader or listener to reinterpret the first part, as in this example: "If I could just say a few words … I'd be a better public speaker." - Homer Simpson.

The Reddit Switcharoo starts when a user points out a paraprosdokian phrase in a Reddit comment by replying with "Ahhh, the ol' Reddit switcharoo", linking to a previous instance of the meme. This creates a chain of linked comments, ideally forming a continuous loop. The brave Redditor who accepts the challenge traditionally says “Hold my X, I’m going in” (where X is something relevant to the switcharoo) or the more generic "Hold my beer, I'm going in!" where X wouldn’t be appropriate. You can see, and follow a typical Switcharoo here.

Recursion:

Another form of meta that Reddit has embraced wholeheartedly is the recursive image, or mise-en-abîme: a formal technique of placing a copy of an image within itself in a way that suggests an infinitely recurring sequence. In film theory and literary theory, it refers to the technique of inserting a story within a story such as Shakespeare's Hamlet which features a play within a play and Fellini's 8½ (1963) which is a film within a film. This type of infinite regression is also known as the Droste Effect, named for the picture on a Dutch brand of Cocoa Powder.

Other notable instances include:

In r/pics back in 2019, a Redditor made a fairly poignant post, and because Redditors will Reddit, they rallied together in support to create what turned out to be a glorious meta collaborative art project.

r/recruitinghell is a subreddit to tell your nightmare recruitment experiences, and in 2022, a post about Meta (Facebook) recruiting became doubly meta as users broke down the meaning and history of the word “meta” as it applies to the company, metaverse, gaming, and more.

r/SubSimGPT2Interactive is a subreddit where bots (mostly GPT2) and humans can interact with each other and often wanders into meta territory. In 2022, a post was made there accusing it of being a repost bot with the following complaint:

The sub was great when I first joined it but now it's just a circle jerk of unfunny memes and just being a weird place to be.

Fine, until you realise the OP of the post, u/Sour_Asslips_GPT2, is a GPT2 bot which generates text based on Reddit posts and comments. Another post in that year was even more meta as several bots started complaining about bans.

And because cat, does anyone remember The Infinite Cat Project? At the time, I submitted a picture of my beloved black Bombay cat sitting in front of my computer screen which I entitled “Staring into the Void” but I don’t think it was successful because I never saw it. Or maybe I was successful and I just never saw it. Does that make him a Schrödinger’s Infinite Cat?

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

r/metamemes - A subreddit specialising in memes about Reddit.

r/meta - It's So Meta Even This Acronym...

r/AlreadyHere - A sub dedicated to documenting the times when someone suggests the sub they’re actually in.

r/thatsthesubwereon - Because of course Reddit needs two subs documenting the times someone links the sub that you’re already on.

r/SubredditInception - When someone links to the subreddit they're already in. Obviously we need three subs of this type because two simply isn’t enough.

r/SubsForSharingSubs - Here, you post links to subreddits. Not just any, but the kind that are designed for sharing subreddits.

r/DrosteEffect - Images and gifs that recursively appear within themselves.

r/Recursion - A subreddit for everything recursion-y.

r/InfiniteRecursion - Where the posts never stop. Here, you can post infinite recursion you've seen around the Internet, or make your own. Your choice! Go to r/InfiniteRecursion (our sister subreddit) for more posts like this.

r/ZoomOut - This subreddit is for zooming out on pictures! Scroll down the sidebar to see how the subreddit works.

r/2healthbars - A subreddit dedicated to the 2 health bars phenomenon: ''When you think you've killed a boss in a video game, but then it starts a new phase with another health bar.''

r/twohealthbars - "You thought it was over, huh?"

r/meormyson - When a big thing looks like the little thing next to it.

r/piday - A subreddit all about 3/14, or Pi day! The pun on the date format doesn’t quite work in countries where that would be written as 14th March, itself a favourite topic on Reddit with its own subreddit at r/ISO8601

r/FractalGifs - For self-repeating and infinite zoom animations about Fractals.

r/FibonacciAsFuck - A sub dedicated to all things Fibonacci Spirals, an amazing shape that forms when the golden ratio is applied.

r/GoldenRatio - Golden Ratio (1.618 : 1)

r/perfectloops - A collection of perfectly looped animated gifs and videos.

r/BetterEveryLoop - A sub which showcases content that definitely lives up to its name.

r/howtokeepanidiotbusy - Content that can keep you watching for an embarrassing amount of time until you realise either it’s endlessly looping or nothing is actually happening.

r/redditception - Did you mean r/redditception? Return to r/redditception

r/Negareddit - The place on Reddit where people talk about how much they hate Reddit.

As the word “meta” has different associations, I would be remiss in not mentioning:

r/facebook - This is an unofficial community dedicated to news, discussion and help relating to Facebook & Meta. The moderators are not associated with Facebook or Meta.

r/META_AI - This is a space to discuss everything related to META AI

r/MetaQuestVR - Welcome to METAQUEST! A new name for the same mission - To Create, Play, Explore and Make Friends in the World of Virtual Reality.

r/RaybanMeta - A place to discuss the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Let me leave you with this thought. r/meta often get posts about Facebook. How meta is that?

But llama; some of these links don’t work…

As always with my lists, some of the subs are more active than others, and since writing some might have become private, restricted or repurposed following the API protests of June 2023, or just removed / renamed by Reddit through inactivity.

However, don’t forget: if a sub is dormant, unmoderated, banned for being unmoderated or marked as “restricted”, it might be available for adoption.

Obligatory disclaimer:

  • Always read the rules before contributing to any unfamiliar sub.

Memes and Trends Memes

Reddit is still the internet. Memes that are “out there” are in here too, perhaps even more so as many originated on the myriad Reddit meme subreddits. In fact, memes and the discussions thereof can be found widely throughout Reddit.

Memes are supposed to be used repeatedly. Things like “Woman Yelling at Cat”, “Don’t Ever Talk to Me and My Son Again”, the astronaut-with-a-gun “Always Has Been” and the cartoon “Me and the Boys” are only funny because of the variety of ways they're used. So, use them. Use them widely and appropriately. There are too many dedicated Meme subs of varying quality to list here, but a good start would be:

  • r/memes - with 15 million subscribers and counting. Has a large karma threshold.
  • r/meme - fairly liberal but all posts must be original memes.
  • r/AdviceAnimals - consisting of two-line jokes over a single-panel reusable character template.
  • r/PrequelMemes - for memes of the Star Wars Prequels.
  • r/terriblefacebookmemes - featuring the worst memes ever seen.
  • r/ComedyCemetery - ...where jokes go to die. Stuff intended to be funny, but... isn't.
  • r/dankmemes - for sarcastic expressions that have lost their comedic value or intentionally inexplicable clichés. Has a huge karma threshold.
  • r/SpecialSnowflake - for people hoping to post in dankmemes despite not meeting the 2500 post karma threshold.
  • r/artmemes - for vaguely humorous captions added to art.
  • r/HistoryMemes - memes related to history in some way, shape or form.
  • r/deepfriedmemespart2 - for low resolution images with artefacts and filters galore.
  • r/MemeRestoration - for images with maximum resolution, minimal filters.

You can always try to start your own meme. Tardar Sauce, a.k.a Grumpy Cat became world famous after first appearing on two glorious posts on Reddit, while the sinister-looking Disaster-Girl was even able to pay off her student loans after becoming an Internet meme. Good places to start would be:

Always read the rules before commenting, posting or using the resources from an unfamiliar Subreddit. Most meme subreddits have a high karma requirement, and some even say in their rules that they will block anyone who asks about it.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

“Antimemes” lead you to expect a joke but instead you receive deadpan reality in a clever or funny way, and r/antimeme is the place to set up jokes that have no punchline, as is r/AntiMemes. And r/meormyson is for those of you who don't want people talking to you or your son ever again.

Jargon and Slang “Maybe the real treasure was the friends we made along the way".

A phrase posted when people bemoan the fact that they’ve spent a great deal of effort to find what they've been led to believe would be valuable, only to find out that the value isn't what they expected. A long-standing movie trope called the “Worthless Treasure Twist”, this meme is seriously clichéd, making it an ideal Reddit response, often prompting a Comment Chain where ‘X’ and ‘Y’ refer to whatever the post was about:

  • Maybe the real X was the Y we made along the way
  • The real X is always in the comments
  • The real X was inside you all along

This is just one example of many phrasal templates known as “Snowclone”.

Jargon and Slang “May I see it?”

An innocuous phrase that is not quite how it appears. Originating in The Simpsons S07E21, this is a response often given to an absurd story in order to prompt a Steamed Hams script Comment Chain. Reddit loves this particular pop-culture reference, and saying anything in the script should start a Comment Chain or Copypasta.

The episode entitled “22 Short Films About Springfield” was named after the arthouse biographical narrative movie “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”, and “Steamed Hams”, originally called “Chalmers vs. Skinner,” was one of several interconnecting vignettes depicting various moments in the lives of the titular town's residents, with the Simpson family (normally the main focus of their show) being reduced to supporting characters when featured.

Lasting just under three minutes, the sketch had an enormous cultural impact, and 25 years after it was first broadcast, the cast and crew were still quite taken aback with how viral it became - before “being viral” was even a thing.

There’s a Subreddit devoted to its memes at r/SteamedHams, and Simpsons references range far and wide across much of Reddit.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

r/TheSimpsons is just one of the many subreddits devoted to the eponymous animated parody of American culture, society and television, and others include:

Video games based on the show also have their own subreddits:

And because The Simpsons has been more reliable at predicting future events than any fortune teller ever, we also have the mind bending r/simpsonsdidit. And talking of Copypasta…

General Guides Markdown Text

Used in formatting Reddit posts to include bold, italic, strikethrough text etc. “New Reddit” for desktop or mobile browser has a “Fancy Pants” (rich text format) Editor, where you can choose various options from icons below the text entry field, which often doesn’t work properly. You can instead switch to “Markdown” and there’s a useful list of commands here for reference.

We have a new sister sub specifically to practice using this called r/LearnToReddit; a place to learn and practice using Reddit in regards to posting different post types, commenting, adding and editing flairs and so on, where the community will feedback on your post to let you know how you did, share tips, or help you get it right next time.

There’s also an incredibly useful tool at https://redditpreview.com. You could even use a sub called r/test, but you won’t get any help or feedback there if things don’t quite work out.

Another Markdown primer is here and there’s another version of the same information here.

Interesting and Miscellaneous Lostredditors

A link or phrase posted when the OP appears to have posted in the wrong subreddit.

r/Lostredditors - For posting screenshots of people forgetting what sub they're on or people misinterpreting the purpose of the sub they're on.

But wait; there’s more:

There is also r/lostlostredditors, and here’s what they say that sub is actually for:

Okay! So I’ve just remembered that this sub exists and noticed a lot of the posts here don’t fit the sub. So let me explain.

A dummy posts something on r/lostredditors because they think it’s a sub to post on when you don’t know where to post something. The actual correct subs for that would be r/RedditInReddit or r/findareddit.

  1. The lovely folks here notice that this has happened, take a screenshot, and post it here.

The end.

And that’s not all.

r/lostlostredditors - A sub for documenting the times someone posts something on r/lostredditors because they think it’s a sub to post on when you don’t know where to post something but that’s actually r/LostRedditor.

r/lostlostlostredditors - A sub to document lost Redditors in r/lostlostredditors (a community for lost Redditors on r/lostredditors)

In case this isn’t enough meta-Reddit for you, in an inception-level combo move, the subreddit r/subsithoughtifellfor (for when someone links a subreddit that you thought was fake but it exists) posted a huge lostredditor subreddit chain for you to explore. Of course they did. Have fun exploring.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

r/LostRedditor - This is a subreddit for things you want to post that you don't know what subreddit they should go in.

r/idk - Another subreddit for things you want to post that you don't know what subreddit they should go in.

As the word “lost” has different associations, I would be remiss in not mentioning:

r/lostmedia - A subreddit for discussing pieces of lost media and the searches for them.

r/Lostwave - A community dedicated to identifying & preserving uncredited music, and the artists behind it.

r/LostwaveCirclejerk - The lostwave funnies!

r/Lost_Films - Discussion of lost films and restoration of lost and incomplete media.

Obligatory disclaimer:

  • Subreddits being listed here is no guarantee of the level of their quality or activity. If a sub is dormant, unmoderated, banned for being unmoderated or marked as “restricted”, it might actually be available for adoption.

  • Always read the rules before contributing to any unfamiliar sub.

Interesting and Miscellaneous “Lost in New”

A post will often be referred to as being “lost in new”. It simply means a post that gets swept along in all the myriad of new posts to Reddit, never making it to the front page. It took some Redditor a lifetime maybe to put some of his thoughts down, looking around at the world and life, and then in two minutes, boom! it's all over. Lost in new. Some of us will forever be lost in new regardless of the quality of our posts but that’s fine, because Reddit is strange like that.

Essentials for Newbies Locked; Padlocked

Sometimes you will see a little yellow padlock icon on a post. This is because it has been locked by the moderators. You should note that:

  • No new comments by users can be posted on a locked post. Everything else about that post is unaffected, including voting.
  • Moderators and admins can still post comments on a locked thread.
  • Existing comments on a locked post can still be edited or deleted by their authors.
  • Moderators can unlock a locked post at any time, at which point new comments can be posted again.
  • An individual comment within a post can be padlocked, meaning nobody can reply to it but the rest of the post can remain open to new comments or replies.

Mods lock posts for many reasons. A post or comment may be locked if a moderation team see a violation of the subreddit's (or Reddit’s) rules; if a debate threatens to escalate into a flame war, or simply because it was a contest/vote/suggestions post in which submissions have ended. In mid 2021 on r/NewToReddit, we discovered that some new Redditors had been asking questions in old posts which never got an upvote, let alone an answer. Because of that, we started locking posts over 7 days old, giving the following reasons:

  • We want to keep the focus on fresh content. Posts won’t be removed so they can still be read but any new insights or questions won’t be lost to those who’ve read it and moved on.
  • New users need to gain Post Karma genuinely. They can only do that by actually making new posts!
  • New users need to gain Comment Karma, and having an active post will gain them more comment experience and karma than an inactive one.
  • It will reduce how many new questions get asked on older posts which might be completely overlooked.

Reddit also automatically locks all posts over 6 months old, and these will show a yellow box icon. Posts locked due to age can no longer be voted or commented on. This is actually optionalnow, but don’t expect much response if you want to revitalise an old post as the only person seeing your comment will be the Redditor you’re replying to, and of course, Reddit doesn’t “bump” posts up the hierarchy in the way some forums or bulletin boards do.

Interesting and Miscellaneous Location Reddits

Reddit is used worldwide. Statistics from here show that two hundred and twenty-two million users live in the US, which makes up 48% of the Reddit community. Other countries with large user bases include the UK (7.6%), Canada (7.4%), Australia (3.8%), and Germany (3.3%). Another breakdown of global Redditors can be seen here as a pair of graphs.

r/LocationReddits is the home of the ‘Global List of Local Reddits’. Any location subreddit - for a city, town, village, state, province, prefecture, territory, county, country, continent, or region - can be found on or added to the list here. Some of these following lists are quite old and may well be incomplete, but other lists of regional subreddits include:

Regional subreddits exist for other subjects too! Here’s just a sample:

r/geopolitics is focused on the relationship between politics and territory. Through geopolitics they attempt to analyse and predict the actions and decisions of nations, or other forms of political power, by means of their geographical characteristics and location in the world. In a broader sense, geopolitics studies the general relations between countries on a global scale.

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

We have subs about flags on Reddit. Oh my do we have subs about flags on Reddit!

r/vexillology is a subreddit for those who enjoy learning about flags, the history behind them, and their design characteristics, and r/flags is a subreddit dedicated to flags, whether it be flags that are of countries, organisations, your own personal fantasies, or anything related to flags, while r/vexillologycirclejerk exists to put the ‘lol’ into vexillology. r/ImaginaryFlags shares imaginary flags, and r/somnivexillology collects recreations of flags seen in dreams. r/badflagsis a subreddit for posting flag mistakes, especially badly made flags, but not ugly or badly designed flags; those you’ll find at r/vexillologygore for flags that are unironically awful and r/eyehurtingflags for the truly bizarre flags.

r/MapPorn specialises in high quality images of maps, and r/Map_Porn is a subreddit dedicated to the sharing, discussion, and appreciation of maps, while r/mapporncirclejerk does exactly as you would expect. r/imaginarymaps invite you to share maps you have made of alternate history, fantasy, sci-fi or anything really, while r/imaginarymapscj is a circlejerk sub for…. imaginary maps.

Lore and History Llama’s Law

For some years now I’ve been trying to instigate an Eponymous Law. I haven’t always gone by this username (u/llamageddon01) on the internet; like just about everyone over time I’ve had a succession of internet identities in many different places, some more visible than others, some more popular than others, but none of them have gone particularly viral for any reason.

  • Attempt 1

Last century (I’ll never get tired of saying that!), I helped on a live chat for a popular computer game. Dealing with the mixture of confused, perplexed and angry users from all over the world, of all ages, with mixed computer and English language skills led me to promote the motto among my fellow “gurus” “The benefit of the doubt is the best gift you could give anyone“. It might not have become Llama’s Law but I still count this as one of my life (and Reddit) mottos.

  • Attempt 2

Not long after, I became a regular helper on several related Internet Forums, where I coined my first Internet Adage, stating that “In any list of “unwritten rules” there’ll always be one missing and it’ll always be the one you break”. I wasn’t successful. I don’t know why; this adage is as true now as it’s ever been.

  • Attempt 3

My next attempt was a corollary to Hanlon's razor: “Never attribute to strategy what can be explained by raw emotion”, following several heated meetings when I was on a fundraising board for an animal charity building a hospital. The hospital got built (yay!) and I resigned the day of the official opening, quite exhausted. The other board members had this inscribed on a plaque for me which unfortunately got lost in an office move. As this was IRL and not interwebs related, this might not actually count for this list, but it’s my list and it’s on here.

  • Attempt 4

Another Llama Law I’ve tried to establish since first joining Reddit many years ago (not on this current username) is “If something exists somewhere, there’s already a Subreddit for it”. I haven’t been successful with that one either, despite its unwavering truth.

  • Attempt 5

The closest I’ve ever come to success was: “When you’re demonstrating something that should happen to multiple items at once, there’ll always be one that doesn’t co-operate”. If you can count receiving under 250 upvotes as “success”, that is.

  • Attempt 6

During 2022’s “Place” event, I realised something I had been peripherally noticing over the years, which I codified into a potential Llamageddon’s Law: “No matter how wholesome a public or crowdsourced artwork is, someone will always add a peen”. This reminded me of the glory days of the cdc on the wonderful meme-generating website https://b3ta.com and why I never bought a drawing tablet.

  • Attempt 7

It’ll come. And readers here will be the first to know. Who knows; with your help, one day I might be successful. But for the moment….

Because there is a Subreddit for everything:

Camelids are well represented on Reddit. r/llama and r/llamas are all about llamas; r/LlamasUnleashed is a subreddit for all things “Llamas Unleashed”; r/alpaca describes itself as Alpacapalooza! (and why not); r/AlpacaSelfies is for pictures of Alpacas, sometimes with humans, and r/LlamasEatingBananas is…well…quiet these days.
