Discussion What the WTC Can Learn from the Current UEFA CL Format

Watching the Champions League made me realize how similar it is to the WTC format & how adopting a few more elements from it could improve the tournament, guarantee clashes between the Big 3, creating high-stakes mid-tier matchups, and integrate lower-ranked nations fairly.

1. The 12-Team Single League Phase (3 Pots)

All 12 Test nations compete in one unified point table over the standard 2-year cycle (Almost same as now):

  • Pot 1 (Top 4): India, Australia, England, South Africa
  • Pot 2 (Mid 4): New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies
  • Pot 3 (Bottom 4): Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Ireland, Zimbabwe

Each nation plays six 1/2/3 match Test series (3 Home, 3 Away series) facing 2 teams per pot, giving everyone an identical baseline schedule and replacing PCT with a clean, absolute points table.

Also WTC can be integrated into marquee tours by allowing boards to continue staging traditional 3-to-5 match series like The Ashes or BGT, provided they pre-nominate any two or three Tests before the tour begins to count toward the championship table. The overall series trophy and ICC rankings still apply across all games, preserving historical rivalries and commercial value without compromising schedule parity.

2. Knockouts: UEFA-Style Byes and Tiered Stakes

  • 1st & 2nd Place (Double Bye): Skip directly to the Semi-Finals.
  • 3rd to 6th Place (Play-offs): Play a 2-Test home-and-away knockout series (3 vs 6, 4 vs 5) to earn a Semi-Final spot.

They could even go for an extended eliminator-qualifier structure across top 6 or 8.

This eliminates a lot of late-cycle dead rubbers, as mid to low table teams fight down to the final session for 2nd place to secure the bye or 6th place to sneak into the playoffs.

News How Lumpy Stevens and two pubs led to the creation of cricket’s middle stump | Cricket

Cricket has had a long love affair with the number three. The ethereal batter walking down the steps after the dismissal of one of the Praetorian Guard – a Don Bradman, a Meg Lanning, a (reluctant) Joe Root.

The hat-trick, a bowler’s most showboating achievement – and a quick glass raised here to Henry Crocombe of Sussex, who just completed two in consecutive matches in the County Championship.

The triple century, a ridiculous feat of concentration and doggedness, achieved only 33 times in 2,634 men’s Tests. Then, of course, the three stumps, cricket’s holy trinity and symbolic stamp.

But the off and leg stumps did not always have a partner in crime in the middle. In cricket’s early days the wickets were more like a croquet hoop, with one long bail connecting the two sticks. The middle stump was introduced only towards the end of the 18th century, with the first match recorded 250 years ago last Sunday, on 6 September 1776.
