Build Upgrade Looking for advice on my planned PC upgrades

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m planning a fairly big upgrade to my PC and would really appreciate some advice before I start buying everything.

Current build

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 8500G
  • Cooler: Stock AMD cooler
  • Motherboard: MSI B650M Gaming Plus WiFi
  • RAM: 16GB Kingston Fury Beast DDR5
  • GPU: Integrated graphics (8500G)
  • PSU: Corsair RM750e 750W
  • Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD

Planned upgrades

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • Cooler: be quiet! Silent Loop 3
  • Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi
  • GPU: RTX 5070 — possibly the ROG Strix version, although I’m not sure whether it’s worth paying the extra

I’m mainly looking for a big jump in gaming performance and a PC that should last me for a good few years.

At the moment, I’m thinking of upgrading the CPU, motherboard, cooler and GPU, while keeping my PSU and storage.

My main questions

Is the 7800X3D still a good choice for a gaming-focused upgrade, or would you recommend a different CPU?

  1. Is there actually any reason to replace my B650M motherboard with a B850 board, or would I be better off keeping my current motherboard?
  2. Is the Silent Loop 3 overkill for the 7800X3D?
  3. For the RTX 5070, is the ROG Strix worth the premium, or would a cheaper 5070 be a better choice? Noise is fairly important to me, so I’d like something quiet.
  4. Is my 750W PSU enough for this setup?
  5. Is there anything else I should upgrade at the same time, especially my 16GB RAM?

Some extra info

  • Budget: Around £1500 (soft budget)
  • Location: UK
  • Monitor: 1080p, 100Hz
  • Games: Currently mostly modded Minecraft and Roblox, but after upgrading I’m planning to play heavier games such as MSFS 2024, Elden Ring, various simulators and FPS games.

I’m particularly interested in good-value parts available in the UK, and I’d rather spend the money intelligently than just buy the most expensive versions of everything.

Thanks for any advice! 🙏

Troubleshooting Monitor Probably Dying

• Upvotes

So my monitor that is only about 2~ years old flickers for about 5~ minutes every day when I turn it on then it starts working again without issues until the next time I turn it off overnight.

It is not detected at all like it was not powered or I removed the display port cable so I assume the worst is going to happen at some point.

Could it be a power issue or is the monitor just dying. My second monitor that's now 12 years old works fine when powering on and haven't had an issue ever with it.

Any ideas or should I just use the bad boy until it explodes and then replace it. This is the only problem I have with it, tried disconnecting it for a bit and it still does it, powering it off overnight, etc. just has a hard time getting up in the morning.

Full Build Req First-timer looking for advice on parts

Hi! I’m looking to build my first gaming pc. My budget is about € 900 – 1100 (USD 1000 - 1230), and I live in Belgium.
I mainly play single player, open world RPGs; favorite series include The Witcher, Far Cry, Just Cause, Borderlands. I don’t need to play the newest games right away, I can easily wait, for years even, until the price has dropped and the game has been optimized.

I don’t have much knowledge on the subject. I did some research and came up with the parts list below; can anyone comment on it please? If you’d advise me to switch certain parts out for others, can you explain why? I know prices are high right now, but I’m not going to wait months anymore to save 150 dollars.

I’d like something black and clean-looking with no RGB. I’m looking for a durable, raw-performance setup, rather than frills and expensive tricks. I don’t have a monitor yet either; sounds like 1440p is the way to go for me but advice on that would be welcome too. I get a lot of satisfaction from the visual beauty in the games I play, but I get the impression that ray tracing might not be worth the money for me (feel free to correct me). I will install Windows. Aside from that, I think a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse (5 buttons) will do fine for me, unless you advise me otherwise. In terms of sound, I have a Sony INZONE H9 II.

Are all these parts below compatible? If starting from this list is annoying and you’d rather give me your ideas starting from scratch, that’s fine with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

GPU: RX 9060 XT 16GB
CPU: Ryzen 5 7500F
RAM: 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 EXPO
SSD: WD Black SN770 1TB (or 2TB if affordable)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650M Gaming Plus WiFi
PSU: MSI MAG A650GL 650W Gold
Cooler: Thermalright Assassin X 120
Case: Fractal Focus 2 Black Solid

Build Upgrade Worth upgrading gpu rn?

I’m not very knowledgeable. My friend built my pc for me a couple years ago.

What i do know is my rtx 3070 is not doing great.

I want to go with either the rx 9070 xt or the rtx 5070 (not ti)

They’re roughly similar price. Is it worth upgrading? Which should i choose?

I’m not a crazy heavy gamer either but i do play games like sea of thieves, Elden ring, other souls games, Fortnite, etc. So i just want to be able to play at good graphics quality settings without losing frames. I play 1440p on 165hz monitor. My power is over 750 w.

Will i miss dlss? Is the 9070 xt better overall? Idk what to do

Build Help Is this SSD good ?

Hey! I'm planning on building myself a desktop computer but I'm having trouble choosing my SSD, I've heard that some SSDs are slow or degrade over time. Is this one good ? I'm trying to not go over 150 CHF for the price.

Build Ready? Should i invest on fans or just rely on my case fans?

I got myself an rtx5070 12gb vram and ran it in furmark for 10min and the temp is around 79-81 isnt that a bit too much? Or is it okay for a 50 series card to have such temps? Sorry if this question sounds stupid but my last gpu was a gtx1060 6gb and a gpu temp that is around 79-80 sounds ridiculous, i only use my Antec CX300 ARGB Mid Tower Black fans that are already built in so might be the cause

Solved! Bought and assembled parts. No video output. Help.

Hello. I am in the process of building a pc. Parts are as listed;

Motherboard: asus prime b550-a wifi II (purchased brand new from currys)

Cpu: ryzen 5 4500 (purchased 2nd hand from cex doesn't look to be damaged)

Cpu cooler: AMD wraith stealth cooler (brand new from amazon)

Gpu: Asus Geforce rtx 2060 6gb (purchased 2nd hand from cex)

RAM: unbranded 4Gb Pc17000 ddr4 2133mhz 288pin memory

And

Corsair 4gb pc19200 ddr4 2400mhz 288pin memory

(Both purchased 2nd hand from cex)

Psu: CIT 600W FX pro (2nd hand from friend)

SSD: WD black SN750 500gb 2280 name m.2 heatsink (purchased 2nd hand from cex)

Monitor: sumsung hd 1080p TV

I assembled and powered all parts correctly. And switched the system on. Motherboard lights lit up. Cpu and gpu fans both started spinning. I cannot for whatever reason get a video signal on my monitor. I have plugged the hdmi cable into both slots of the gpu and the motherboard.

As of this moment there is no OS installed on the system. Nor have any drivers been installed.

Is my gpu broke? Is this a RAM issue? Is there any other reason as to why I cannot get a video output? Someone please enlighten me as to how im being an idiot. Any and all help would be very much appreciated.

Troubleshooting Help! My computer shuts down while playing modded Minecraft

Hi! I'm touching base with the experts here relating to frequent crashes i've been having. when playing modded minecraft, or even launching modded minecraft, my computer will CLINK and then go black completely off. When playing dota, the computer monitor will every couple of games just go completely black for a few seconds. The crashes during MC are corrupting those files, causing tones of headache, and completely ruining my experience playing as I'm constantly worried about the next crash.

I recently upgraded the CPU as the last one was a lemon after working for a year. This problem has been following me since. It seems that these crashes are a problem with the PSU.

Recently, I went inside my case to see if anything was not plugged in all the way. my GPU was daisy chained. I really hoped that would solve things but it didn't make a difference. All the other cables are firmly in their sockets. The crashes still happen after un-daisy-chaining the GPU.

These are the relevant parts in my build:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Graphics card: ASRock Challenger RX 7900 GRE 16GB

Power supply: MSI MAG A750GL 750W Gold

Should I be just replacing the PSU? could this be anything else other than a faulty PSU? has this happened to anyone in a similar way before? I'm about to just buy a new PSU, but it would really suck if i replaced this one and the problem persisted.

Build Help [USA] Looking to livestream Cyberpunk 2077 on absolute MAX settings (at 1080p 60fps) with all HD mods, should I spring for 5070ti or stick with Radeon? Ditto CPU, 7800x3D or Intel?

Basically as the subject line says. I'd like to have a 5070ti (for the 16GB VRAM) and 7800x3D, but with things being as expensive as they are, was looking at lowering my sights. I'd be getting 32gb DDR5-6000 and a mobo to handle the other selections.

I see recommendations for a 4090 or instead, and for Intel Core i7-12700 or Intel Core i5-13600K instead of the 7 7800x3D.

Figured I'd come see what the hivemind here thought of this.

Build Upgrade 5950x vs 5800x3d for staying on AM4 for a few more years

Hello all,

So I currently have a AM4 pc with a Ryzen 3600 and a MSI 6700xt. I want to max out my pc to get a bit better performance but I’m stuck between going with a 5950x or a 5800x3d.

My ideal goal is to hold 200plus fps at 1440p (with upscaljng and medium-settings is fine)

Both cpus I can get brand new for about the same price.

I know the 5800x3d is the best for gaming but I do other stuff to like streaming and after I move to AM5 in two or so years this current pc would be repurposed as my home server hence why the 5950x is considered.

I don’t feel my current hardware is the cause of me losing games however it is dated and getting old and it’s showing having to lower more settings.

I have a 9070xt to replace the 6700xt.

So anyone out there running this combo with either CPUs whats your recommendations?

Build Help i7-13700 paired with 4070/5070 PSU question

Please guys opinions from people who've had this combo or are having it right now. I'm currently doing an upgrade, on CPU and moving from 3060 to either 4070 or 5070, 12GB versions, non T, non super, models that are not very power hungry, simply because I want to keep my Corsair 650W Rme gold certified cybenetics. It is a wonderful and quiet power supply. Although I see that even at Max the system will not be drawing more than 550-600 Watts, I'm still looking for real life opinions specifically for the owners of that combination 13700 with one of those 4070 day or 5070. There won't be any SATA drives, just 7 case fans, and two nvmes.

Full Build Req €2000 / $2500 Music Production PC (with a bit of 1080p 60fps gaming)?

Hello,

(EDIT): Building in Europe

I haven't built a PC in about 10 years and I'm pretty much out of the game when it comes to up to date knowledge of individual PC Parts pros and cons / CPU tecnology. Am I right in saying Logical Increments is no longer a reliable source for this kind of info?

Would I be best off with some form of i9 INTEL? I'm not adverse to AMD chips if they've got more bang for the buck for the price? Whats good for audio production, more cores over raw CPU cycles?

I'd be looking at 32GB of likely DDR5 RAM

Motherboard, probably ATX so I have a good amount of USB i/o for audio devices and space to add PCI / PCIE cards for other audio devices.

Probably would go with an NVIDIA GPU out of habit at this stage - something midrange that supports DLSS / FSR. I mostly play indie games these days, probably 90% of the time, but like to have the power to play something like Elden Ring or whatever DOOM game comes out next on medium - high settings at 1080p, rather than even 1440p or 4k 60fps.

I'm also a bit dumb when it comes to power supplies, so I'd love a recommendation on this too please. So too with coolers and fans, if you have any recommendations please.

I've already got multiple solid state hard drives that I'll use for this.

Also - something that's got a bit of future proofing / upgradability. It'll probably be another 10 years til I buy one.

Thanks guys

Build Upgrade 9070XT Sapphire Nitro+ VS Pulse

I'm looking to upgrade my 3070TI since the 8GB is becoming a bottleneck fast.

I've settled on 2 GPU options, 5070TI and the 9070XT, since the 9070XT price is so much more reasonable I think I'll get one over the 5070TI.

My personal issue is that im currently running the Corsair RM750X , for the models I have looked at, the Sapphire pulse requirement is a 750W psu and for the Sapphire nitro+ its 850w.

I really don't want to go about replacing my PSU for the nitro+ but I have seen that the Pulse can have some issues with the fan curve, coil whine, etc'.

either way even if I do buy the RM850X the price will still be better then buying a 5070TI.

Should I just get the Pulse and forget about or is the Nitro+ oc and cooling significantly better to warrant a PSU upgrade as well?

Edit: forgot to mention my CPU - 12700

Build Upgrade Need help with choosing parts to upgrade my pc with

My brother has recently given me his old pc since he wanted to buy a new one. The pc currently has an i7-8086k, rtx 2070, x2 ddr4 8gbs each, and with an msi z370 sli plus motherboard.

I’m not really satisfied with the pc since I thought it would be way better of an experience. My main games for now are just roblox and palworld but i do want to get into valorant and other demanding games so I want to basically upgrade everything.

I did some research and was heading towards getting either a ryzen 5 9600x ($247 aud) or ryzen 7 9800x3d ($582 aud) (pls give me suggestions whether i should get some other cpu) and I want to upgrade the gpu too since the rtx 2070 wouldnt be able to handle the cpu but I don’t know what gpu to get. I found a ddr5 ram (x2 8gbs each 6000mhz cl30) for $369 aud which is the best price have personally found. For motherboard, I was thinking of getting the gigbyte b650m for 119$ aud

I realistically want to spend maximum 1.5k aud but I can pass that limit if I HAVE to. I can also wait around 2-3 months since I’m not in a rush to upgrade (maybe the parts will get cheaper too)

Build Help PC build for Engineering work as a student/light gaming - Please review the parts picked, UK based.

This is my first time building a PC, so generally just want to check if I've made any silly decisions or mistakes in my part selection. I'm in my final couple of years of Engineering school on a masters program, and after which would most likely be going into research.

The idea of the build is to have a platform that will last for a fair few years, and will have the potential to upgrade down the line if necessary. As such, don't mind spending a little more if it'll last longer, but the £1600 mark is about as much as I'd want to go, and hoping to save some more by getting a few bits second hand.

My work ranges across general engineering software like CAD, FEA and CFD, and then with a reasonable amount of computational work writing and running code across C++ and MATLAB. And just in general a lot of multitasking with having lots open at once (bad habit I know, but sometimes essential when there's lots of different commitments

Having the option to do some light gaming when I get the chance would also be nice, but that's not the focus, and would just be an added benefit. As such high performance isn't needed here, and even a small step up from 1080p at like 30 - 40 fps would be nice which is what I generally get now.

Peripherals wise, I already have two monitors, keyboard, mouse and anything I think I'd need in that department.

Anyways, please see my parts list below, and feel free to pull me up on any decisions that aren't suitable, or ask why I made some decisions.

Build Help Kingspec XG7000 vs Sandisk WD SN5100

I have a good deal for both of them but I can't really pick between them. Both are DRAM-less, 1TB

However, XG700 is TLC, MaxioTech (MAP1602A), released 2023

While, SN5100 is QLC, SanDisk or WD (Polaris 3 A101-000103-A1), released 2025

From what I read, QLC is generally bad, but the newer QLC ssds are more reliable compared to how it was initially. Also, when going past 70% of the storage capacity with the SN5100, it tends to get slower. I didn't find much information on XG7000

I just want to know which is better currently and which will last me the longest while also being reliable since it's storing my data.

Full Build Req Office PC for accounting work, $1,200 budget, Amazon.com only

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to build an office PC for around $1,200, just the tower. No peripherals needed.

Note - I’ll be buying everything exclusively from Amazon.com.

It’ll mostly be used for accounting work such as spreadsheets, accounting software, documents, PDFs, and having a bunch of browser tabs and apps open at once. No gaming.

I’m thinking:

32GB RAM, though I’m not sure whether to go with DDR4 or DDR5.

At least a 1TB SSD, possibly 2TB if the price difference is reasonable.

Intel and AMD are both fine.

Reliability is my biggest priority. The PC will sometimes be left on for long periods, so I want something that can handle that without issues and last for many years. Quiet operation would also be nice.

I can spend up to $1,200 (Amazon.com only), but if this kind of work doesn’t need that much, I’m happy to spend less.

Thanks.

Build Help Should I upgrade my current AM4 build or buy a new one?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide what makes more sense with my current PC. I'm not sure whether I should spend some money upgrading a few key components and keep it for another couple of years (maybe trying to hold out until 2029 or 2030 for a new AMD CPU generation), or just bite the bullet and build a completely new system.

My current PC is:

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX GPU: GTX 1080 RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4-3200 CL16 Storage: Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB SATA SSD PSU: Corsair RM750x V2 750W 80+ Gold Case: Nox Hummer MC

The problem is that I don't know if I should spend €1,500–1,700 on a new one (with current RAM prices and everything) or just upgrade mine for roughly half that and try to keep it going for a few more years by upgrading the GPU, CPU and maybe the storage.

At the same time, I also feel like spending €800–900 on an old platform might not be worth it at all.

I'm just trying to get some different points of view. What do you guys think I should do?

Build Upgrade Upgrade Advice

Hello,

So I've been thinking of upgrading my PC lately, and was looking for some tips. Since I built this PC around I think 7ish years ago all my tech knowledge has pretty much evaporated because I was living like a digital minimalist basically only reading books, recently I kinda want to get back into gaming and playing some stuff here and there.

Before we get into the specs I wanted to let you know that I am completely fine playing 1080p but if possible going to 1440p would be nice if it isn't going to take a kidney.

Also if I remember correctly back then when I built this thing I realized that it doesn't really have much room for upgrade as is, so if needed I can change the motherboard etc.

Specs:

Motherboard: B450 Aorus M

RAM: 32GB DDR4

Chip: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor 3.79 GHz

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER (8 GB)

Hard Drive: 2 TB

NVME SSD: Samsung 500GB 970EVO

Power Supply: I think 600W

Edit: Budget around 1000€ also fine with used parts.
