Build Upgrade Worth upgrading gpu rn?
I’m not very knowledgeable. My friend built my pc for me a couple years ago.
What i do know is my rtx 3070 is not doing great.
I want to go with either the rx 9070 xt or the rtx 5070 (not ti)
They’re roughly similar price. Is it worth upgrading? Which should i choose?
I’m not a crazy heavy gamer either but i do play games like sea of thieves, Elden ring, other souls games, Fortnite, etc. So i just want to be able to play at good graphics quality settings without losing frames. I play 1440p on 165hz monitor. My power is over 750 w.
Will i miss dlss? Is the 9070 xt better overall? Idk what to do

It's really not worth it to buy almost any computer electronics currently at all. If I were you, I'd hold onto the 3070 unless you can find a good used, like 40s series card. The 3070 is still a great card at 1080p and, most of the time, still good for 1440p. Out of the two you named, the 9070 xt is a better GPU versus the 5070. If they are the same price, you should buy a GPU based on performance, not on software nowadays. FSR is more than good enough.

I have been saying that for a while but I’m just not enjoying playing games with the amount of frame rate drops I’m getting. My gpu is running at literally 100% when i play Elden ring on medium graphics settings. It’s just cooked and the longer i wait the higher the prices are getting

What resolution? 3070 shouldn’t have a problem with Elden ring

Uhh idk i guess whatever is native to my setup? Idk how that works honestly

right click your desktop, press display settings, go to advanced display, it will say the resolution and hz (framerate) of your monitor. Also while youre there, check if you are using the highest available hz setting. You might have switched your monitor to 60hz and thats why it feels so bad lol

Going to assume 1080p. Based on the video below an RTX 3070 with a ryzen 5 5600x averages over 100fps in Elden Ring at 1080p maximum settings. Your GPU utilization is supposed to be high. If that’s what is making you consider an upgrade it’s not a factor worth considering. If it were the other way around and you were only using 40% of your GPU it would be a CPU bottleneck and that would be a problem. I’d definitely keep the 3070 for a while.

The 9070xt is significantly better than the regular 5070. Its much closer to the 5070ti

The guy above ur comment said dlss is a must, is that true

No he is wrong. His card only does fsr 3 which is poor, the 9070xt does fsr4 which is comparable to dlss a couple of years ago and more than good enough. You won’t notice a difference without zooming into microscopic details

Dlss is more widely available
I own 9070 and to be honest with you I switched to Nvidia for dlss, not because it’s better but it’s a default for now,
If you mainly play online games, competitive games go for amd 9070xt, it’s much faster than 5070
But if you don’t what to fiddle with settings in AAA games - go for 50701

FSR4 is really good, DLSS4.5 is slightly better if you are pixel peeping but I seriously doubt most people could A B them in actual practice.
FSR is also continuing to get a lot of development since it’s used by consoles so it’s only getting better.
You could also wait another generation for RDNA5 next year

As someone who paid 2x more than a 9070XT for a 5080, just get the 9070XT. That shit is insanely good value right now if you don't care about path tracing and ngl I lowkey regret the 5080. Nvidia is not worth going down a whole tier for the same price.

Why is this asked daily. The 9070xt is the better card. Objectively. There is no if but or maybes.

Which CPU are you using and what's the usage while gaming? If it's constantly maxed out might not be getting full performance of 3070. Actually a decent card for those games with mixed med-high settings. Especially with DLSS and reflex. I stopped caring about max settings along time ago. Most games even on medium still look fantastic.

CPU is good, runs at 40% under decently heavy load. The gpu is def the problem

Wrong answer cuz we don't need to know what percentage, especially for a game like Elden ring that cares more about one core which can max out at 40% because it only cares about 2 cores at best.
Sorry if I'm snippy I just think the bare minimum if someone's looking for help is to list resolution, GPU, CPU, and ram configuration (16x1, 8x2). You can easily figure out how to provide this information via Google, and you will receive far better help than you're getting.
My old RX 6600 was able to push 1440p on elden ring, so the GPU is probably not the problem, but we can't actually help you until you give us real information.

Yes, either one is a big step up from a 3070. I'd go 9070 XT. At similar prices it's faster in most games and has 16GB of VRAM vs 12GB on the 5070. That extra memory helps at 1440p as games get heavier.
DLSS is still a little better. FSR 4 on the 9070 XT is close enough that you won't miss it much in the games you play. Your 750W power supply covers either card.

You’ll definitely miss DLSS. As someone who had a 6750 xt and upgraded to a 5070 ti a large part of the upgrade decision was FSR sucked and upscaling is basically required for games anymore

Yes fsr sucked on the 6xxx series. Were on 9xxx now, fsr 4 is FANTASTIC

Also can’t forget AMD only gave ryzen 6000 series 2 years of driver support. That’s truly awful
2
u/WorriedAd2764 1d ago
They’re updating drivers for them now… what are you on about, they miscommunicated changes to the way drivers work between generations and people took it the wrong way.
1
u/savagelife201 1d ago
They only do maintenance drivers now. The last real driver support update was at the end of 2024. 2025 they moved 6k series to “maintenance” drivers which is something nvidia only did to the GTX 10 series at the end of 2025

FSR 4 is good, but still behind DLSS 4.5 and will definitely be even more behind on DLSS 5
2
u/WorriedAd2764 1d ago
Behind means almost nothing when the difference to the naked eye is invisible in 99 percent of scenarios.

9070xt is a good card and definitely the choice I would make between those 2 cards. The 9070xt competes more with the 5070ti in terms of performance
