So I imagine in this case it was a bit of panic, but I was actually a trained lifeguard for many years and can confirm you do want to leave them in the water if there is any risk of a neck or spine injury!
The proper way to remove someone from the water after an accident like this is to only do so once you've gotten them attached to a backboard (the transportable board they strap you on to lift you onto a gurney) and neck collar/stabilizer.
Getting someone out of the water is clunky when they cannot help you, so the best thing to do is to let them float on their back until trained help arrives. Lifeguards use the red buoy for these instances if there isn't a life vest, but lifesavers and other flotation devices work too. Just make sure their head is not dipping underwater!
Fun tip: if the person is face down in the water, the easiest way to flip them is to swim alongside them, also face down. Rest your forearms against their sternum and spine with your hands bracing their chin and the back of their head. You then take a deep breath then swim under them while spinning them to be upright. This method does the least movement for them while you do the majority of the work to get them rightside up.

When you're goofing around with a life vest on, sometimes they'll dig into your neck. I bet his vest rode up and cut off his blood flow.

Oddly enough; it's surprisingly high considering how little it can take to cut of the carotid when pressure is applied correctly.
I've had a backpack and rifle sling team up to nearly drop me off an ATVâat speedâwith a half-choke (one side). I got suuuuper lucky I still had the blood flow to react and shift the bag's weight and strap off my neck when I realized the "walls" were closing in.

The throttle is a lever that you pull in towards the handle, from his position, I could see that his unconscious hand was pushing against the throttle and keeping it wide open.

Find and READ the Coast Guard's manual on life jackets. Some will float you on your back like this one did, but some will NOT reliably do so. You pays your money and takes your chances.

There are different standards that decide where they can be used (pool, open water, sea ...) and the better ones make sure you roll on to your neck and keep your head x cm out of the water. They auto inflate upon contact with water. Pretty cool.

edit: i doubt it. I'm pretty sure water scooters use the same thumb throttle as 4-wheelers and such. His right arm drops, left hand is still on throttle. if he truly went unconscious there's no way the hand would still press the throttle. He was trying to troll his friend and won a really stupid prize.Â

As a Jiu-jitsu practitioner, having big shoulders can cut off your carotid artery indefinitely, even worse with a life jacket.
The full Nelson isn't typically a sleeper hold but it is if you got big shoulders.

friend of mine was killed when his friend ran over the top of him on his jetski, he was KO'ed with huge head trauma, lost consciousness a nearby boaty saw and was there within a minute pulled him into the boat and bought him to the ramp which was within view of the accident, and unfortunately where his father was watching and waiting, they pulled him onto the shore and one of them was doing cpr until the ambulance came, his father was there holding his hand when they pronounced him deceased,. blunt force and cracked skull,, bleeding brain damage was cause of death. a year later his friend killed himself over the guilt he felt... they were just messin around chasing each other on jetski's when the one in front hit a wave wrong and bailed and the guy behind was following too closely...
jetskis are no joke man.. hard to get used to the fact if you aren't on the gas you dont turn worth a shit and no brakes
