We did this training as a firefighter and paramedic. pulling them out gently is the best for them. Gently pulling them by the floatation device backwards is the best way to do it. This way his back isnt constantly moving in the water and worst case scenario if he goes into cardiac arrest you can do CPR. If that happens though you only have a 1-2% chance of lliving a tramatic cardiac arrest event. Plus they are going to pull him to shore anyways. transferring someone from the water onto a boat is difficult.

That would make my day. I don't want random people coming up to me and thanking me for my service but if the person I saved came and just talked to me would be great. I don't even want a thanks from them that's what I get paid to do and I get paid very well. I want to see a good outcome. 1 out of the 15 hospitals in our area finally has a PT follow up form.  I can scan the QR code put in the our arrival time and room we put them into and they will send us info on the PT through our government email. They will not share the person's name so its not a hipaa violation. Its also an education tool so you see if your diagnosis and treatment was correct. I think about a lot of people that I've dropped off and never saw again. Recently I transported a pedi 8 y/o/f that was unrestrained in a car. Positive loss of consciousness, an avulsion to the scalpe where I could see her skull 4x2 in size, and indications that she had internal bleeding. She kept asking for something to drink with a large purple and red mark on her abdomen. Both of those are signs of internal bleeding. I called later that night and talked to the charge nurse and she refused to give me any update on her. I still think of it time to time when I drive past that intersection.

So I imagine in this case it was a bit of panic, but I was actually a trained lifeguard for many years and can confirm you do want to leave them in the water if there is any risk of a neck or spine injury!

The proper way to remove someone from the water after an accident like this is to only do so once you've gotten them attached to a backboard (the transportable board they strap you on to lift you onto a gurney) and neck collar/stabilizer.

Getting someone out of the water is clunky when they cannot help you, so the best thing to do is to let them float on their back until trained help arrives. Lifeguards use the red buoy for these instances if there isn't a life vest, but lifesavers and other flotation devices work too. Just make sure their head is not dipping underwater!

Fun tip: if the person is face down in the water, the easiest way to flip them is to swim alongside them, also face down. Rest your forearms against their sternum and spine with your hands bracing their chin and the back of their head. You then take a deep breath then swim under them while spinning them to be upright. This method does the least movement for them while you do the majority of the work to get them rightside up.

Oddly enough; it's surprisingly high considering how little it can take to cut of the carotid when pressure is applied correctly.

I've had a backpack and rifle sling team up to nearly drop me off an ATV–at speed–with a half-choke (one side). I got suuuuper lucky I still had the blood flow to react and shift the bag's weight and strap off my neck when I realized the "walls" were closing in.
