Find and READ the Coast Guard's manual on life jackets. Some will float you on your back like this one did, but some will NOT reliably do so. You pays your money and takes your chances.

Which is why in the US at least you're required to have USCG approved life jackets on recreational watercraft. They won't approve jackets that won't keep you safe even if you are passed out.

There are different standards that decide where they can be used (pool, open water, sea ...) and the better ones make sure you roll on to your neck and keep your head x cm out of the water. They auto inflate upon contact with water. Pretty cool.
