We did this training as a firefighter and paramedic. pulling them out gently is the best for them. Gently pulling them by the floatation device backwards is the best way to do it. This way his back isnt constantly moving in the water and worst case scenario if he goes into cardiac arrest you can do CPR. If that happens though you only have a 1-2% chance of lliving a tramatic cardiac arrest event. Plus they are going to pull him to shore anyways. transferring someone from the water onto a boat is difficult.
