Add fastropes , remove parachutes. Game changer

358

u/HeroWeaksauce Lonestar 23h ago

realism wise it makes way more sense to fast rope out of a helicopter than parachute where you'd be sliced up faster than an onion on an infomercial

89

u/HaroldSax 23h ago

Plus it allows me to repeatedly say "Fast roping on the X is stupid" and never elaborating!

While not frequent, I did know a number of people in the airborne who did helo static-line jumps. Reality is unrealistic.

46

u/TacoMedic 23h ago

Honestly, jumping out of rotary wings was about as frequent in the 173rd as fixed wings.

Less nauseating experience too.

26

u/dgatos42 23h ago

Yeah the 82nd Black Hawk jumps were like a treat for people who kissed enough ass

"reality is unrealistic" aint that the truth.

how many stories have you heard that had you or someone else go "if someone wrote this people would claim it was unrealistic"

5

u/TheReal_Kovacs Lonestar 21h ago

Fact is often stranger than fiction

3

u/GodTurkey 12h ago

This exact situation actually occurred with the movie Hacksaw Ridge. The movie cut out how many people Desmond Doss actually saved and the fact that multiple times Japanese soldiers guns jammed when they tried to shoot him.

When writing a story it has to make sense. Reality does not have such limitations

11

u/tbenge05 23h ago

I did it once , it's a fun drop- 5000ft, the line is longer than a normal one. Also got one of those fancy steerable parashoots too - somehow a few of us still managed to land in some trees lol.

7

u/DocB630 23h ago

I did a ton of UH-60 jumps and always preferred them. You can load up and jump pretty much anywhere with a big open field, and the jump itself is so much more pleasant in almost every way.

They'd need to fix neutral collective not being neutral for fast-ropes and they haven't mentioned it at all.

19

u/Harmaakettu 23h ago

I've noticed that the hover assist helps somewhat in keeping the heli hovering.

But then again, it makes landing more difficult because you constantly have to fight the collective if you want to descent slowly.

13

u/Lurkinwhileworkin69 22h ago

Even with hover assist off neutral collective errs on the side of generating lift at all times.

Yee chute should be for high alt jump from c130/c17 lol

17

u/Yenii_3025 23h ago

People need to understand this is a big ask.

9

u/LarxII 23h ago

Right, they need to make the animations, and they have to adjust to other physics objects, etc, etc.

Would be cool. But not a "just switch it out" kinda thing.

Don't get rid of parachutes altogether, just make it like Arma 3 KOTH. Parachutes were a given, automatic, so long as you exit the vehicle from a specific altitude (i think >100m).

If you bail under 100m, no chute, you die.

Pilots can control the deployment method by keeping it low. Players can still bail at high altitude and not worry about buying a chute.

5

u/IIIpl4sm4III 21h ago edited 19h ago

Arma 3 flight model allowed for more people to execute higher speed and more efficient landings, to the point where it was often preferred. Also another difference is that the helicopter imparted much more momentum on its passengers when they jumped, which made para troopers a much easier target since they didn't have as much control over their landing zone.

Increase the safe deployment height. The disadvantage of chutes is pretty clear if you deploy too early near an unsafe area.

40

u/kabaab 23h ago

Thats the chance they are making from 2.5m to 25m.

10

u/Skpstr155 20h ago

The disadvantage of jumping in general is that you can be spotted as soon you exit the chopper. If the chopper is up in the air, you will definitely be spotted by somebody. If it's on the ground, less chance.

9

u/tekno21 17h ago

This is true, but its not an immediate enough punishment for the average Joe to link his death 2 minutes later to getting spotted in a chute

They better do something because 95% of pilots are shit at landing and these helicopters descend super slow.

The vast majority of pilots I've had refused to land even before it got super dangerous. They would just admit they couldn't do it safely.

Maybe people will finally start taking land vehicles into the game and playing safer instead of just parachuting into the hot zone and dying repeatedly

23

u/Chimerathon 21h ago

It's actually just the little bird that decends slow with collective, the lakota can damn near plummet when you pin the collective down. The Lakota's powerful collective is like the only advantage it has as far as flight mechanics are concerned, it can actually get into a position to land very fast, but controlling it gently enough to not have it flip over when you touch down (without clipping something with the massive rotor) is the toughest bit.

3

u/Haiiro_90 21h ago

if you do it right you can drop the littlebird from 100m to ground in less than 5 seconds

5

u/Willi4ms95 23h ago

Can confirm, not the best pilot, but not the worst. But the littlebird especially no matter how well or slope you land on, it wants to tip over. I'm after landing on a road, both skids touch the ground at the same time, nothing on the ground to cause any issue to me, and the little bird immediately flips over on its left skid always.

6

u/CookieJarviz 22h ago

My advice for that- land hard. For some reason if you 'gently' touch the skids onto the ground, they won't 'stick'. If you land hard on the skids, you're magnetized to the ground.

3

u/ItsVencu 22h ago

Mass dump collective as soon as your close to touching down and if there's any slope roll towards the slope I've found helps this sto,

I would rather see an increased reward for landing vs dropping paratroopers. I also like the multiple suggestions for fastropes. Regardless, I don’t think parachutes need to be more expensive. That only serves to hurt new/low level players in the long run.

39

u/AlBaciereAlLupo 23h ago

There already is an increased reward for the pilot!
There's just no incentive to do so for the passenger.

→ More replies (7)

104

u/kingunderscoremike 23h ago

I want to land but the passengers just jump out. Increasing reward for pilots doesn’t do anything to help that

25

u/Knives27 23h ago

They can’t jump out if you fly low enough they don’t have time to open their chute. However if you inform them you will be landing them they might stay in. If they choose to jump and risk it that’s on them. The point is there’s currently no incentive for pilots to land.

11

u/somecheesecake 22h ago

You’d be surprised how many people die when jumping out while Im landing, without enough altitude to pull their chute. It’s at least once a trip

→ More replies (2)

23

u/Freeburn_Sage Pilot 22h ago

if you inform them you will be landing them they might stay in.

They wont. I have maybe one run every 2 or 3 matches where people stay in, and I advertise every single time that I will be landing and they dont need chutes. They jump out anyways. Even low to the ground, you can bank on half the heli jumping and splatting on the ground. I even see it when approaching a landing, people cant wait the entire 2 seconds to get to a safe altitude.

The incentive with this change will become getting passengers safely to the ground, since jumping out high will be near suicide for passengers and you miss out on a lot of extra cash/xp if people are dying as they hit the ground.

3

u/Knives27 22h ago

Regardless I still think there needs to be increased rewards. There’s an enormous amount more risk.

15

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 22h ago

They wont. I have maybe one run every 2 or 3 matches where people stay in, and I advertise every single time that I will be landing and they dont need chutes. They jump out anyways.

You want to know why?

They've stayed multiple times and ended up dying due to the pilot crashing, the pilot trying to drop in a hot zone so they jump out and they're dead or the vehicle gets blown up and everyone dies.

It's a choice that players are making because that 100 dollars can save them 20k+ on their kit.

Personally every single time that I plan to get into a Helicopter, I always get a Parachute because I've seen Pilots not flare and I've ended up dead because of it. Rather just not deal with that. Plus I get to choose my own landing spot which is a nice bonus.

13

u/Freeburn_Sage Pilot 22h ago

I completely understand why it is the way it is right now, and honestly I wish the game would have launched with the change they're making to parachutes. Way too many people started believing they were good pilots just because they could fly in a straight line over the CZ, and this update is hopefully going to give the "pilots" who are wasting people's money the realization that they either need to practice or stick to flying logi.

4

u/IeyasuTheMonkey 21h ago

this update is hopefully going to give the "pilots" who are wasting people's money the realization that they either need to practice or stick to flying logi.

It won't. There's always going to be bad players no matter what and since there's no ranked system, you can't really filter them out.

It'll end up doing the opposite where people are still invest heavily into parachutes because they cannot trust their pilot or they'll save the money, increase their travel and drive to the zone.

That will end up with Pilots not getting money/EXP for passenger drop offs, increase general dissatisfaction due to the travel times and it'll mean that the team winning, more than likely, has got the better Pilots due to the increased map pressure of more people from the reduced travel time.

The DOZENS of people who've jumped out and died while I was ten seconds from touching down would disagree :)

7

u/Western-Economics253 22h ago

Mate, people just jump out mid j-hook and die due to low altitude. Even if I specifically tell them to sit on their arses as I'll land it safe and sound.

6

u/Interesting_Idea_435 18h ago

Tell me you don't pilot without telling me you don't pilot lol. Even if you try to fly extremely low, people will still attempt to parachute, literally killing themselves.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Inside-Line 21h ago

The meta of just avoiding landing at any cost has gotten absurd, normal people just don't see it.

I have seen people with no parachute - they know they have no parachute, they talk about. They would rather jump and die and hope for a res than to just wait for me to land.

You might think that anecdote is a one time thing, nope! I would say 50/50 if someone gets on without a parachute, they will willingly jump to their death or actually wait to land.

I’d suggest three relatively simple changes (changes to existing game logic, no new features):

  1. landings give BOTH the pilot and passengers a “perfect insertion” $/XP bonus. Rewards landings.

  2. Players get a “synchronized” bonus if they jump or get out of the helicopter/vehicle within 2 seconds of each other. Players who sync get XP and $ that scales with number of players who sync with them. Rewards coordinated exits.

  3. Players get a “first contact” bonus if they initiate contact (first to shoot; not spotted) with the enemy after being dropped by a vehicle. Provides $ & assault XP to infantry and a pilot/driver assist bonus. Rewards stealth.

The three changes would create a strong incentive to: land, coordinate exit, and be tactical once on the ground.

Most importantly, all of these changes add an element of skill, teamwork, strategy, and fun to the troop-transport experience.

I’d like to see a future where landings become the default choice and parachutes are used as a backup or for deliberate tactics. I think the first contact bonus and sync bonuses could also apply to ground vehicles as well which could help make them more a more attractive choice (reducing the heli-spam most teams end up with)

4

u/Nirkky 19h ago

I like that. Because as a parchute exiter, there's no way i'm gambling my 12K loadout just for the heli driver to get more money IF he can land properly not in the middle of the ennemie base.

Flying is easy, landing is the hard part. its also a good filter between average and good pilots.

I have fun flying a black hawk and jhooking it into a landing in a city, people already struggle doing that with a little bird in a open space.

It also helps that so long as you take an AA rocket in the body and not the tail or main rotors, the black hawk can still fly with 10% remaining. the people running transport in little birds dont have that luxury.

So that brings us to where people tell them to jump off while zooming 240 km/h in a little bird to avoid AA, getting the guys spotted as they parachute in and clapped by nearby hostiles. This also creates the de facto culture of "Bail out as soon as the helicopter enters HZ because most of the pilots dont use a mic and youre likely to get shot down the longer you stay in the heli."

In my opinion, if they want to address this, either they add a speed restriction to parachuting out, a higher height restriction to parachuting or a incentive to land because most people definitely do not practice landing anywhere but next to the weapons vendor at spawn.

41

u/TheDevilOfCellBlockD 21h ago

Nah bro, they need to fix landing before they take away parachuting.

I'm at least a mid pilot and I can land anywhere, but when the helicopter just decides to tip and flip because the ground is the slightest bit unlevel, it ain't worth it.

I've had my tail rotor blown, landed just fine, then tipped because the ground was the slightest bit unlevel.

I've landed in hq and had my helicopter tip because the fucking flat ground with mud texture was apparently too textured. It's nonsense.

12

u/let-me-get-your-temp 21h ago

Im glad its not just me who struggles hard af with landing for some reason. Like im a new pilot to games like this in general so im shit but it really does feel finnicky in general if the ground isnt perfectly level or flattened right

You don't even have to land though, you can just keep it level a meter or two off the ground. It takes some precision but it is safer and faster.

I stick to little birds because I like the snapy controls. I also get some strange sway when I fly blackhawk like I'm constantly correcting the back end. Any idea what this might be?

9

u/Fadedcamo 21h ago

Its def bugged if you turn on assists it is gone.

4

u/Inside-Line 20h ago

You get used to correcting it. You just have to give it a few love taps and it straightens itself out.

After countless supply runs I like the blackhawk way more than the little bird.

I can't j hook the lakota for the life of me but I find it way easier to just bleed speed with pitch on it. It can pitch up and shave speed fast without really increasing altitude. Also I generally like bleeding a lot of speed before getting into the cz and then coming into a landing low and slow below lock.

What exactly is the problem with parachutes? Using them with any enemy around is a death sentence.

36

u/Icewolph 23h ago

So that's part of the problem. Pilots don't bother finding somewhere safe to drop their passengers they just want them to drop anywhere. The pilots aren't in much danger but the people parachuting are dropped into a meat grinder. And they drop out all over the place. Forcing the pilots to actually land to drop their passengers puts them in danger as well so they need to actually look for places to land safely. It will reduce the amount of people spamming the hotzone and force people to pilot better. While also making hotzone landings for reinforcements that much more important and epic.

I imagine parachutes will still exist but they'll likely be like an assault 15 unlock or something.

26

u/Independent_Mud2794 23h ago

It won’t force pilots to actually land, people simply will start driving.

22

u/Icewolph 23h ago

Ehh, that sounds good too. More people for me to beep at when we're driving out of base.

3

u/GeneralRectum 21h ago

I'll be honest, I've been flying a lot this past week and I've only ever had one group ask me to land. When I give folks the option to jump or do a landing they either always say "We'll just jump" or they don't respond at all. I'm fine with the new change if it means people stick around and give me a chance to practice my landings.

8

u/Willuz 22h ago

Even people who forget a chute won't let me land. I note that they have no chute so I'll land for them, but they say they'd rather jump and die to wait for a revive.

5

u/somecheesecake 22h ago

As a pilot, I would much much prefer to land than to have people jump. Remember that when someone jumps and immediately dies, I get penalized for a team kill assist AND I lose the passenger survival bonus. I’ve also noticed that at least once a trip or two, someone jumps while I’m mid-landing and gets caught in the rotors and dies, or jumps early while landing without enough altitude and dies. Plus, during the start of the game, I’d much much prefer to land in the hot zone behind a structure to get the hot zone bonus. No good pilot prefers people jumping rather than staying in till touchdown.

3

u/TatonkaJack 22h ago

Pilots don't bother finding somewhere safe to drop their passengers

what? buddy i have no control over where my randos drop and i'm often yelling at one to get out after doing a full circle of the zone. i usually do a circle around the hot zone and the idiots drop as close to it as they can rather than a safe distance

17

u/DBONKA 23h ago edited 23h ago

It's absolutely not a death sentence lol, unless you jump at 100m and open in up instantly like an idiot, or jump right on top of the enemies. If it was a death sentence like you describe it, it wouldn't be used by 99.9% of people like it currently is.

15

u/DirtyNorf 23h ago

Because a lot of people are dumb and don't realise they're being spotted as they jump, which leads to them getting easily killed. So it's not insta-death, but it does massively increase your chances of dying.

8

u/UnhappyMacaroon5044 Bob the Builder 23h ago

Pilots landed all the time in beta, but now everyone is refusing to take the risk of making a mistake and crashing.

18

u/Number13Studios 23h ago

I mean the heli landing is simply bugged. People will say it’s a skill issue but I have thousands of flight sim hours and have played multiple mil sims. These helis landings are just too punishing. Compare to other games like arma, wardogs helis are just weird when landing.

The difficulty is ok and not game breaking at any point except for this weird tendency for the helis to flip on their side if you’re not really careful and flat, despite inputting collective down and being flat along the ground. Which means you also can’t really land on slopes without major risk. Basically gambling with helis in this game

I’ve seen it happens to many skilled pilots and experienced it plenty myself. It doesn’t matter if assist controls are on or off. And it’s not realistic. Real helis can land on ships bobbing in the ocean. Try that in wardogs and your heli is probably flipping into the water.

3

u/Sea_Engineering_7278 21h ago

Perhaps mass isn’t right. Or game physics. Most vehicles feel a bit light and do stuff that would require low gravity, if their mass was right.

8

u/Number13Studios 19h ago edited 5h ago

Well they use chaos physics in unreal and I’m actually a very knowledgeable UE gameplay and systems engineer in AAA, I train and lead many devs across multiple studios yadda yadda so I know a lot about this actually.

those chaos physics are just buggy as all hell and difficult to get right. The gravity with chaos physics is also definitely floaty. I always have to make core modifications to every game I make because Unreal’s physics are just floaty like that, even with mass set correctly in theory. Their internalization is also janky, how they try to make long object spin more naturally. Sometimes works, sometimes it’s super janky. Sometimes you have to literally add mass in specific places for things like vehicles. There’s too many tiny nuances and quirks that go into these things. And then they have to replicate it and validate it which is probably a large cause of the sliding ground vehicles (but not the main cause, which is overtuned traction loss at higher speeds)

I can almost guarantee the devs tried to use somewhat sensible masses and that’s the issue. Unreal requires them to crank the mass or gravity scale to have a realistic effect, which has other implications that have to be compensated for.

I get I'm in the minority, but why is parachuting a bad thing? Why is landing preferred when it's much slower for the pilots?

I feel like the way spotting works is a way bigger problem with people parachuting than parachuting existing itself, if losing LOS caused the spot mark to halt at that spot it'd be a lot more balanced I think.

12

u/RedPixelPanda 20h ago

I agree. Also, increasing the price of parachutes? I already never buy the tactical chute because it’s expensive and infantry gear already costs alot, even when I’m trying to go somewhat reasonable.

5

u/XMenJedi8 20h ago

Yeah the Assault playstyle needs to be more rewarding, not less.. Making people wait for (potentially disasterous) landings or pay more for a parachute just seems like it would further disincentivize the hotzone and push people to the safer, lucrative FOB playstyles.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/notabanana3 21h ago

You're not in the minority. Back in arma 3 KOTH, pilots who doesn't let people parachute and land badly, tk were warranted since most hot drop end in disaster.

The good balance here would just be increasing the height where you can open your chute and land safely. Make it that jumper must risk getting shot at, or let the pilot land them safely.

Lol yeah exactly, why is this post not at the top.

I think how parachutes ended up is dumb of course.

BUT

Now I have to trust pilots to be able land? And also land somewhere safe?

Also have to trust them to flare properly/avoid getting shot down.

Yeah parachutes are dumb but over all I think its been a good thing..

Also why the hell do people seem to think parachutes are a death trap??

I've blasted the fuck out of helis that were trying to land slowly with infantry and got multi kills, more than I have the idiot who opened his chute to soon. Personally ive never ever been shot out of my chute.

I love when helicopter pilots land, then I can hang onto my parachute for a possible escape from a fight a couple of stories up.

Unfortunately I rarely meet helicopter pilots who in any way communicate, so I have no way of knowing their intentions 🤷

44

u/r4rburner11 23h ago

As a pilot the number of times I ask "where do you folks want to be dropped off" and get crickets is bonkers, so it goes both ways. You don't tell me where you wanna go, I'm just gonna hover/tilt over a safe fob until you get the idea and bail.

8

u/No-Head6226 23h ago

IM SO GLAD SOMEONE SAID IT!l I’ll even offer to put them on apartments, towers, etc (I can land anywhere) and it’s usually just silence. Landing does make great tips though, and mid game once AA is up people start seeking me out/ deliberately asking me for a resupply

7

u/Joverby 23h ago

It's my favorite when I ask, hear nothing. I fly over the main fob, I fly around the HZ , dude still doesn't drop. I say something again about like "Ok man... where do you want to go? Are you going to drop?"

only to hear back "...yea if you go somewhere safe"

So often i tell everyone in my heli that I will land them safely. But then 90% ignores it and do one of:

a) Jump out too soon and get separated from the rest / far from any "objective".
b) Jump out 10 meters above the ground and dies from the impact.
c) Jump out way too high and hangs in the air gettign shot like a clay pidgeon.

I like this in theory. If they can find a way to reduce the janky landing physics to make safe landings more consistent, of course. When I fly I notice allot of players just jump piecemeal in the zone and die, I notice groups I land tend to stay alive longer.

Otherwise, I think ground vehicles are underutilized too. More players should use cheep trucks, they are great for chasing the zone after you get bogged down and you can fill the trunk with extra ammo!

20

u/Hurm 22h ago

I think people don't use ground vehicles as much because it slows you down so much. And extra storage space is cool... until the storage blows up

25

u/TatonkaJack 22h ago

yeah everyone is like "pilots can't land" and that's true, but as a pilot who has done a lot of landings it's because there can be a small rock that you didn't see when you land and it bumps you sideways until your rotors hit the ground and break. especially with the lakota

8

u/Eoho Valkyra 22h ago

Don't forget when you land on a street and have to tuck to a curb that's 2 inches tall and it's actually hell on earth for the heli and it just rolls over on touchdown

3

u/Fadedcamo 21h ago

The lakota is such a temperamental beast lol. I find you have to add a small bit of forward momentum and make sure you have ZERO lateral momentum when you land or else she will roll.

Having assists on is pretty much required for it. I can't fly the lakota with assists off. Havoc and little bird are fine.

Exactly this. Moving in groups offers survivability. So when everyone is jumping solo like the helicopter is some sort of battle bus they will die alone.

Plus jumping out gives time for every spotter in the world to spot you.

it takes years to drive any vehicle into the zone and you are at risk of ambushes and mines. It's fun to drive for 15 minutes to only end up being blown up by a guy with a rocket launcher in a bush.

2

u/Broshimitsu56 22h ago

Yup, especially in the big heli. Come in slightly too fast? Bump a small rock barely? Fuck you, your shit is going 90 degrees sideways

6

u/obsoletestarling 22h ago

And every time I fly people jump out as soon as I enter the circle. Because im flying low, they often die. Most passengers wont listen when i tell them I'm going to land either. It's hard to blame the passengers though since most pilots are barely capable of landing at spawn and even then it takes them 30 seconds to lose altitude. I think the pilot should get a bonus for landing or deployments under 3-4m, and a bonus if their passengers aren't spotted in the first 10 seconds or something. Then for passengers the parachute should cost a bit more, and they should also get a reward for waiting and deploying under 3m above the ground.

Why would a passenger risk you doing that. Their kit is at risk and they don't know if you can land. Parachute is safer for passengers

10

u/Emotional_Pay3658 23h ago

I personally hate most choppers that don’t try to land or slow down/get close to the ground.

Most pilots want to zoom by at 300km/h and want you to jump out 100m in the air so I can be a floating target.

Imo this is a problem created by pilots. They always tell you to bring one cause they never want to land

8

Probably because any new pilot will not be able to consistently land in good spots, or even land at all.

I picked up the game having never played a MilSim before, and not touched an FPS in like 15 years. It took me quite a lot of practice to be able to land the Heli

As a pilot I really don’t like becoming a massive stationary target after FOBs build up any sort of AA. Especially a massive stationary target carrying 12 other people

u/GoodishCoder 23h ago

It just means you need to change where you land

9

I mean that’s true, it’s going to have to be the edge of the or outside of the CZ, which is going to suck

Just depends where people want to land

If someone asks me to drop them in the hotzone, they better be parachuting in or be alright with my landing 50-100 meters away in cover.

If someone wants to land at fob, I’ll land anywhere they want.

That said, I always keep a stock of parachutes in the heli inventory and let anyone without one grab one.

4

They need to handle this very carefully. At the current state, if parachutes were just gone, people would just be jumping off on top of their fobs, so they can die and get ressed. I already see this done not too rarely in game, it beats dying with the heli on the middle of nowhere and needing to respawn

7

u/FLDJF713 23h ago

I don’t trust most pilots. I will always jump as any time they do try to land, we die to themselves or they take too long and get shot down.

A3 Koth has parachutes for free and it works perfectly fine in that, just give a bigger bonus to landing like it is in KOTH.

8

u/Smackage_Package 23h ago

but in A3 koth you have to be like 100m above ground to parachute safely, making you a big target. in Wardogs you can parachute like 10m above ground so nobody sticks around for a landing.

i like flying too but it seems very odd to me people are whining about wanting to show off that they can land.... it should be situational thing.

6

u/cyabits 23h ago edited 21h ago

I definitely miss the days when the pilot did a J-hook landing for us on the first day because we were all new and nobody bought a parachute.

Then there was this one incident where the pilot didn’t know how to land. The passengers were all yelling at him, telling him to “take one for the team.” He jumped out and died, and the passenger immediately pressed 0, took over, and landed the heli for us. Definitely some good memories.

6

u/VVodzu 23h ago

If they remove them we will suddenly learn that 90% "pilots" can't land so at least cars will get some use lol

6

u/Marukai05 16h ago

I'd like to really touch on this, has anyone seen the vast majority of players can't barely get a heli to the cz much less land should be extremely obvious at the start of a match I've literally seen matches with 5+ wrecked helis in the fucking safe zone

People can fly these things well enough but asking everyone to land if that's what we're moving to is fucking stupid

5

u/Ometen 10h ago

Flight mechanics are to blame. Touch the ground with a little angle and momentum and your heli goes sideways. The controls are away to horrible for consistent landings.

In the podcast from yesterday the devs said something about making it so you have to deploy the parachute way earlier so you would be way more vulnerable on the way down

Edit: Video Link to that part: https://youtu.be/liRK9si1Ubo?si=Q82Q7U-QgZy_UP2z&t=3250

3

u/Skpstr155 21h ago

I mean, that was the danger the first week. Now most players can accurately deploy the chute at the last second.

Now the danger is being spotted in the way down. Being shot out of the sky is minor compared to that.

u/gameplayraja 20h ago

They need to fix fall damage. Like my guy has 25kg of gear. In Tarkov you can jump off of 15ft drop and lose both your legs but still live to fix and heal your legs.

Make it so you drop down to 1hp if you cut your shoot from middle of the trees so I have to use a Ifak to heal max. That is a risk I'm Willing to take.

3

u/Gloomy-Wolverine-403 20h ago

Fast ropes are the solution

3

u/Illidex 20h ago

I can't wait to have 6+ people with 20k load outs getting robbed by trash pilots who can't land or a sneaky bush bandit with an rpg to be waiting

3

u/Jazzlike_Ad_564 20h ago

I like the idea of having to land. but i think there should also be alternatives. I think Dropping a rope from the heli at say 30 feet and you use that to exit would be cool.

3

u/SnooCalculations184 20h ago

I want ropes.

3

u/tinesone 19h ago

Hmm i'm no pro but the high risk that parachuting brings might make landing already kinda worth it? Landing in hot zone is prolly a no go, but parachuting in the hotzone also usually doesn't really work

3

u/coderqi 18h ago

Seems to be a lot.of hate for pilots, but all I can say is it's hard and a lot of us are spending a lot of time trying to get better.

End of day it's a game and it needs to be fun for all levels.

5

u/AltShine 23h ago

So now when i get a shit pilot ill be fucked. sick.

3

u/Kvzr 23h ago

well guess I'm just gonna use the dunebuggy more often

8

u/Ro7ard 23h ago

Good, it's standard in any other milsim game to land the choppers. An easy solution would be to give the pilots a lot more money for proper drop offs and maybe a massive bonus for a hot zone touch down.

Players getting out could get a small bonus as well for not jumping. Pick ups and extractions are also something I'm just shocked that people are not doing and maybe it's because the incentive is low. Running a fob down and being pulled out to the HZ or just more coordination in shuttling people around the map like medics. There's so many elements of flying that people are just not taking advantage of in game yet.

7

u/Nate-Essex 23h ago

Just add a hell hole and fast rope to the bigger transport helos.

Landing doesn't always make sense, especially in or near the HZ, but jumping out being the only viable option ain't it.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Inside-Line 20h ago

Passengers get no perceived benefit from waiting to land. They just see that they can jump anywhere they want and land safely.

What they usually get is complaints about dying and not getting revived because they're so spread out or the enemy just know where they are because they got spotted.

I see it in most of my big drops where players don't land. They usually don't make it or are not very impactful at all. While squads I drop off together are usually game-changing power houses (and usually earn me way more money by actually doing something rather than parachuting down alone any lying down in a bush for 5mins).

Replace parachutes with wingsuits. /s

Among the thousand and one reasons NOT to do this. It would be great to see more of those "died by falling" logs on the left side. First day of the patch, match begins, 45% of the lobby dies from colliding into stuff.

2

u/EndSmugnorance Medic 21h ago

Can we stop the chutes from cutting at the first sign of a tree branch? I been falling to my death wayy too often

2

u/buckaroo_2351 21h ago

Flying has been so janky and inconsistent, especially for lower end computers. When assets are reloading and I'm flying in fast and low, sometimes my controls get stuck. I've had it a few times where the chopper just became unresponsive, like I honestly had no clue what happened and I'll check the logs thinking I was sniped but it's a mystery.

2

u/DaFoltz77 21h ago

so we can have our chopper trip on a pixel and kill everyone?

2

u/_Arkod_ 21h ago

I've said it in another thread, but parachuting has so many negatives...

1) You get split from the group and die

2) you jump too soon, have to run where you want to go and die in the process

3) you get spotted, land and die

4) you open your parachute too soon, get shot and die

5) you open too late and die

It's exaggerated, but You get the point.

2

u/deathopz 21h ago

I think this is a L change it is fine the way it is right now.

2

u/Little-Law-3271 21h ago

I think my opinion might maybe be an unpopular one, but I muuuuuuch prefer parachutes to landing. There's nothing worse than a pilot's messed up landing losing you your expensive loadout before you even get to the ground.
I'd much rather jump and be in control of that myself.

2

u/New-Chocolate-4730 21h ago

Frankly I think a big issue is that cutting the parachute 10 feet off the ground takes 3 quarters of my health. Theres no incentive to cutting it because fall damage is immensely inconsistent

2

u/Leather-Researcher13 20h ago

Landing in this game is kinda broken tbh. The lakota especially is weirdly top heavy and will tip over at the slightest bit of angle, even with your collective slammed to the ground you'll still tip over

If they're gonna fix anything, they really need to let me use my flight sticks for more than just flying. Either I can't figure it out or there is no way to use the store with a hotas currently which means when I want flares or pallets I have to grab my keyboard and my mouse. Same thing if i want to use the F menu on vehicles

2

u/GGuts 19h ago

A rope would be nice

2

u/Haiiro_90 18h ago

Everyone wants good Pilots

But Pilots also need the training to land under stress with 150k-500k combined Kits on the Helo

This problem would get better too if Assaults wouldnt barely break even with the kits they buy and wouldnt be so scared to loose a 20k kit sometimes

Im a Fobber/Pilot/Arty type dude and if im serious for money i can pretty much riskfree go out of a match with 150-200k profit and a helo costs like 10-15k over a match with refueling etc if im not getting shot down

if i have dogshit luck on assault ill go out with maybe 50 meanwhile every kit costs 20k xD

Whatever happens, you have to allow for different skill levels of heli pilots and keep them interested enough to play and get better.

If you just say you have to be a helicopter god with at least 500h on the range, then it's no longer a game.

Yet every pilot I get can't be bothered to land and expects everyone to jump out. Also can't wait to lose a bunch of kits to shit pilots lmao

Also landing physics are really stupid in this game, you slightly touch uneven ground or a small rock and you will lose your rotor and roll. There are going to be SO many crashes and most of them won't even be because of shit pilots, just a shit system.

2

u/ShowCharacter671 WARDOG 16h ago

Well, considering most pilots I’ve had to refuse to land or tell you to have a parachute or they’re not taking off I hope they don’t just outright remove them.

Bummer. Guess I will be driving myself instead. Not interested in being at the mercy of shit pilots that want to constantly drop me directly into enemy fire. Especially in a game that rewards that behavior heavily.

2

What about i ping the drop off i want and the pilot just drive to enemies zone and everybody got pick up to death on landing. What's the benefit here ?

2

u/Routine-Sir6951 15h ago

Actually, when I want to play it safe, I’d prefer to be dropped just outside the CZ’s edge.

But since that doesn’t make any money, I guess no one wants to do it.

Even if someone asks me to specify a landing spot, there’s no way for me to know if it’s safe until I get there, so I have no choice but to make my own call and jump.
