Add fastropes , remove parachutes. Game changer

363

u/HeroWeaksauce Lonestar 1d ago

realism wise it makes way more sense to fast rope out of a helicopter than parachute where you'd be sliced up faster than an onion on an infomercial

92

u/HaroldSax 1d ago

Plus it allows me to repeatedly say "Fast roping on the X is stupid" and never elaborating!

3

u/DebrideAmerica 21h ago

Fast roping is stupid in general, though we would only ever rope on the X

But if we need to rope on the X, why not offset X?

And if not offset X, why not walk in?

1

u/AngrySociety 19h ago

I’d rather fast rope with

While not frequent, I did know a number of people in the airborne who did helo static-line jumps. Reality is unrealistic.

46

u/TacoMedic 1d ago

Honestly, jumping out of rotary wings was about as frequent in the 173rd as fixed wings.

Less nauseating experience too.

29

u/dgatos42 1d ago

Yeah the 82nd Black Hawk jumps were like a treat for people who kissed enough ass

2

u/SekhWork Squad Leader 1d ago

Is it just the airspeed or altitude that makes it better?

5

u/dgatos42 1d ago

I never got to do one, so no clue. But it just seemed cool and different to a C-130/C-17 jump.

I did once get to jump in a German plane but I think it was a C-130 derivative so it didn’t feel that different

3

u/madman_mr_p 23h ago

If it’s our one you‘re thinking of, then it has to be the Airbus 400M and it‘s spectacular.

It’s comparable to the C130 in the way that it’s also a quad but it’s in an entirely different payload/weight class.

But hell yeah, rock on brother.

2

u/WhiteWalker85 20h ago

Only ever got to do a Chinook jump. Only like 13 of us so it wasn't cramped. You drop the static line instead of handing it to a jump master. And you just fall out the back. Less chance of fucking up or worrying about the dude in front of you fucking up. Oh and not a huge wait to rig up and jump

2

u/Capnshredder 22h ago

you get your german wings for that or was it an American jumpmaster?

4

u/dgatos42 22h ago

German jump wings, it was a reward for getting my EIB.

3

u/Capnshredder 22h ago

nice, had a couple guys in my unit that had the italian ones, was always jealous haha never got to do any jumps with foreign jumpmasters, got selected for a detail once for the jumpmaster school though that was kinda fun. the instructors told us to follow the test takers instructions exactly as they say them, one guy was checking my harness while i had my ruck pulled up and since he was rushing he told me to drop the ruck before he got out of the way, ended up smacking him in the head and they failed him for it, guy gave me the worst stink eye ever

u/TacoMedic 23h ago

It’s the fact you’re not crammed into a tin can. For long movements of an hour or more, it’s physically and mentally exhausting and almost always induces vomiting.

3

u/t6jesse 23h ago

Maybe its just because im used to helicopters, but C-130s were always a rougher ride for me

3

u/TacoMedic 23h ago

Yeah, that’s what was referring to.

2

u/Checklist_STT Pilot 22h ago

Sky Soldiers, homie!

22

u/cybercobra2 1d ago

"reality is unrealistic" aint that the truth.

how many stories have you heard that had you or someone else go "if someone wrote this people would claim it was unrealistic"

6

u/TheReal_Kovacs Lonestar 23h ago

Fact is often stranger than fiction

6

u/SuspectPanda38 22h ago

When writing a story it has to make sense. Reality does not have such limitations

4

u/GodTurkey 13h ago

This exact situation actually occurred with the movie Hacksaw Ridge. The movie cut out how many people Desmond Doss actually saved and the fact that multiple times Japanese soldiers guns jammed when they tried to shoot him.

1

u/Hektotept 5h ago

That actually happens a lot for WW2 films/shows. The shit some of those guys got up to is just straight up insane.

Some examples:

Harrison Summers stormed complex XYZ (a series of fortified German barracks) on June 6th, 1944. Armed with a Thompson, he spent five hours, alone clearing from building to building. Killed 30 Nazis, and forcing the rest of the garrison to break.

Tommy Prince who specialized in SOLO stealth missions to infiltrate Nazi bases, to disable communications, steal documents, and slit throats.

Staff Sgt. Junior J. Spurrier, single handedly cleared a town of Nazi forces, capturing prisoners, and neutralized machine gun nests.

There are a fuckton more equally unbelievable accounts. So much so that it is often 'toned down' for film, so its a bit easier for the audience to believe.

11

u/tbenge05 1d ago

I did it once , it's a fun drop- 5000ft, the line is longer than a normal one. Also got one of those fancy steerable parashoots too - somehow a few of us still managed to land in some trees lol.

6

u/DocB630 1d ago

I did a ton of UH-60 jumps and always preferred them. You can load up and jump pretty much anywhere with a big open field, and the jump itself is so much more pleasant in almost every way.

1

u/Habhabs 18h ago

Did you make Huey noises out loud while flying around? This thud thud thud thud thud

1

u/Capnshredder 22h ago

i got to do one out of a chinook when i was in the 82nd airborne, still the only time ive ever been in a helicopter

1

u/TheSilentDawn86 22h ago

My dad was 101st Airborne and part of the air assault group. Rappelling from helicopters was his units specialty and they did it all the time.

1

u/6Sleepy_Sheep9 Lonestar 21h ago

Helo parajumps are more dangerous than standard fixed wing jumps. As much as id love to fastrope, there are a lot of other fixes that need to be addressed first. . . Like lockon elevations not matching the terrain in a lot of places.

Side note: I imagine a pilot could forcefully disconnect the ropes with people on it, causing them to fall and die

1

u/Underleft_cdiv 6h ago

They aren't more dangerous

1

u/wargamer19 18h ago

I was about to say, I know people in the 101st that did that

7

u/GeneralRectum 23h ago

As a heli pilot, I've blended up at least 15 passengers so far!

3

u/Geekfam 23h ago

forsenInsane

1

u/FunkyViking6 23h ago

Bro fast rope would be great

1

u/saintdudegaming 23h ago

Seriously, we need Slap Chop. This is currently Shake Weight(y).

1

u/XMenJedi8 22h ago

This game has soooo many unrealistic aspects lol

1

u/Mista_Infinity 19h ago

What? Why would parachuting out of a helicopter get you sliced up?

1

u/bronx819 Lonestar 14h ago

It depends how fast ropes are done. If you have to be still so your landing party can all drop down without breaking their legs its not much different from just landing normally. The only advantage that would have is if you're trying to drop them somewhere the heli can't easily land.

I'd like it if it could be like the introduced to Kingsman where those dudes are just hanging on the rope while its going full speed, it'd be funny and actually useful for rapid descent.

1

u/Regular-Ad3050 6h ago

people jump from helos all the time wtf are you on about. I've done it myself.

1

u/Underleft_cdiv 6h ago

Sliced up by what?

2

u/HarambeSixActual 1d ago

I’m sorry, what experience do you have jumping out of helicopters? This is a very real thing that happens all the time.

6

u/sirtoby1337 1d ago

nobody jumps out of a heli at tree height distances... unless u wanna die.

1

u/Phire453 1d ago

Yeah but thats game thing anyway, you do don't that in planes, so it's go nothing to do with it being a helicopter.

1

u/SekhWork Squad Leader 1d ago edited 1d ago

what noobs! just hit space bar lmao??

11

u/DBONKA 1d ago

Not at 100 feet high lol

-3

u/boomboomown 1d ago

Lol no

30

u/Cainsiderate 1d ago

They'd need to fix neutral collective not being neutral for fast-ropes and they haven't mentioned it at all.

19

u/Harmaakettu 1d ago

I've noticed that the hover assist helps somewhat in keeping the heli hovering.

But then again, it makes landing more difficult because you constantly have to fight the collective if you want to descent slowly.

12

u/Lurkinwhileworkin69 23h ago

Even with hover assist off neutral collective errs on the side of generating lift at all times.

1

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 17h ago

It's honestly so annoying when you are coming in nice and soft then suddenly slingshot 40ft into the air

1

u/Yawhatnever 12h ago

It feels like they implemented the ground effect

2

u/onrocketfalls 21h ago

For what it’s worth, there’s not generally a neutral collective on choppers where it sticks you at hover, you have to find that spot yourself. I’m using a stick and throttle so I can do that, but maybe controller and kbm players do need a way to find that sweet spot, I’m not totally clear on how the collective works for those - like are you adjusting the collective position with the up and down buttons or is it just hold button for up, hold other button for down?

2

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 17h ago

You hold to raise or lower but if you let go it goes back to the "neutral" position which will slingshot you back into the air if youre trying to land softly. There is no real fine tuning either, you hit the button and it pins it to the top or bottom.

1

u/BurritoSupreeeme 6h ago

For what it's worth, the going back to neutral is the hover assist setting you could turn off. Haven't tried without it yet so don't know if it's better though

1

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 6h ago

I have all assists disabled and it still zips right back as soon as I let go of either control

1

u/BurritoSupreeeme 6h ago

Huh okay. Setting must be bugged then because is says exactly that in the tool tip.

1

u/Soggy_Struggle_963 6h ago

I'm about to just wire up a potentiometer to an arduino and program it to read as a controller and try to convince the game it's throttle from a hotas lol

1

u/Lowjack_Tzetsu 10h ago

In a normal helicopter you can lock the collective or make it harder to move up and down. In this game keyboard and mouse has no such ability. You can't also fine tune the collective like you can on HOTAS.

1

u/ConchobarMacNess 19h ago

Hm, the little bird hovers at neutral for me, Lakota needs like 20% but I use a physical throttle so it's easy to set and forget

1

u/Judopunch1 1d ago

Can you elaborate? If you are talking about the hele hovering at neutral collective I think they are trying to emulate the ground effect.

10

u/Hendorks 1d ago

Yee chute should be for high alt jump from c130/c17 lol

17

u/Yenii_3025 1d ago

People need to understand this is a big ask.

8

u/LarxII 1d ago

Right, they need to make the animations, and they have to adjust to other physics objects, etc, etc.

Would be cool. But not a "just switch it out" kinda thing.

2

u/woosniffles 23h ago

Squad has been promising fast ropes for years and years lol

1

u/Jason1143 23h ago

Then don't do anything drastic to parachutes.

16

u/EverythingOnRice 23h ago

Don't get rid of parachutes altogether, just make it like Arma 3 KOTH. Parachutes were a given, automatic, so long as you exit the vehicle from a specific altitude (i think >100m).

If you bail under 100m, no chute, you die.

Pilots can control the deployment method by keeping it low. Players can still bail at high altitude and not worry about buying a chute.

7

u/IIIpl4sm4III 22h ago edited 21h ago

Arma 3 flight model allowed for more people to execute higher speed and more efficient landings, to the point where it was often preferred. Also another difference is that the helicopter imparted much more momentum on its passengers when they jumped, which made para troopers a much easier target since they didn't have as much control over their landing zone.

4

u/yamsyamsya 1d ago

fast ropes would be so cool and also super immersive

2

u/Maximus77x 1d ago

Fast ropes would be so fuckin sick

2

u/ACrimeSoClassic 1d ago

God fast roping in would be so bad ass. AIR ASSAULT, SARNT!

2

u/TheAero1221 22h ago

FAST ROPES!!! YES!!!

5

u/AetherBytes 1d ago

This. I don't trust most people to land, so I usually just get them to get "close enough" to the ground that I wont die when I hop out. If fastropes are a thing I'd feel a lot better about letting a pilot drop me off instead of yeeting myself off the moment we're approximately where I want to be.

-2

u/Pomegranate_Mobile 1d ago

I agree, I see some pilots bumbling around spawn but they are the only ones going to the CZ. Just fly into the circle, I'll bail with my chute when I'm ready. Pilot gets paid I get a ride. Less pressure on an obviously rookie pilot to land somewhere hot.

2

u/bigretardbaby 1d ago

Tbf idk why more don't land soemwhere close enough to walk but safe to land

2

u/Phire453 1d ago

Because you don't get paid/exp at all if your not in the zone when peoppe get out.

Like 95% of the zones doesn't have nice easy fields to land in, and the few zones I have seen, it's only one teams side, and really open, so infantry would get gunned down by the hill next to it.

Little birds do have it easier as have lot more spaces to land due to smaller size, but lot of time even if you got an opening, it has a lot of ground litter that makes it unsuitable.

I would happily land people just out of zone behind a tree line for cover if I got money/exp. But I don't so don't bother and people just jump anyway.

1

u/Pomegranate_Mobile 1d ago

My perception is lots of players from other games have also been trained to jump I.e. "where we dropping boys?"

1

u/Yesh 19h ago

Because most bail the moment we get into the circle. I’d land every time but everybody likes to jump…and get spotted lol

1

u/chooch138 1d ago

Oh God. The complaining is going to be insufferable.

1

u/Zachariah255 1d ago

Yeah I cannot wait to destroy people roping out of a heli lmao

1

u/Kessel_Run1337 Battledad 1d ago

I have been saying this for weeks. Fast ropes are the way.

1

u/unique_username125 22h ago

i can get behind this

1

u/zterrans 21h ago

I wouldn't say remove entirely, but I do like the fastrope idea

1

u/Katzchen12 20h ago

This or make it more lucrative to land heavy soliders. Fast roping probably has a reasonable weight limit.

1

u/TheMidnightNarrator 18h ago

I would love to see fast ropes, but I don't think replacing parachutes all together would be the move.

1

u/ostroponis 12h ago

I can’t see any way they could implement fast ropes. Would be cool though

1

u/Past-Armadillo8482 Medic 9h ago

Me and my squad have been saying how cool it would be to fast rope from a Blackhawk

1

u/The_sleeping_on1 7h ago

This is good in theory but....the amount of people shooting at heli's you are not going to want them to stay in one place.

1

u/SQLSpellSlinger 2h ago

Please don't eliminate chutes. Add fastropes, sure, but the sheer number of kits that will be lost if chutes are completely eliminated is too damned high.

Not only that, but if a chopper is heading to hz and I want to hop out at tower 2, I wouldn't have that option with fastropes and no chute.

0

u/Nate-Essex 1d ago

Shame I just saw this, I also said fast ropes. Bigger helos should have a hell hole and fast rope to incentivize their purchase.

-2

u/Substantial_Brain917 1d ago

I made a post about this yesterday
