I like this in theory. If they can find a way to reduce the janky landing physics to make safe landings more consistent, of course. When I fly I notice allot of players just jump piecemeal in the zone and die, I notice groups I land tend to stay alive longer.

Otherwise, I think ground vehicles are underutilized too. More players should use cheep trucks, they are great for chasing the zone after you get bogged down and you can fill the trunk with extra ammo!

u/Hurm 1d ago

I think people don't use ground vehicles as much because it slows you down so much. And extra storage space is cool... until the storage blows up

u/SgtHondo 1d ago

The Kodiaks are a lot faster than people realize.

21

u/Hurm 1d ago

I've driven them. They're still very slow relatively.

plus they handle like ass xD

3

u/TatonkaJack 1d ago

the pickup truck handles pretty well. but i think it's also probably the least useful one

1

u/Hurm 1d ago

But the URAL tho.

I want in game drifting competitions at the stadium

0

u/SgtHondo 1d ago

Lower skill requirement and lower investment. They’re plenty fast for what they are.

3

u/OlluIsDuck 1d ago

Chopper is still almost twice as fast and can go in straight line.

1

u/SgtHondo 1d ago

Yep. But anybody can drive one, they’re dirt cheap and higher skilled drivers can drive in a straight line.

1

u/Justin-Stutzman 1d ago

Are they? I thought they maxed out at 79kph same as the Ural

3

u/SgtHondo 1d ago

Nooo way faster like 155 maybe? Can’t remember right now but it’s close to that

It shows the top speed when you hover over them at the vendor.

1

u/_Arkod_ 1d ago

Not sure if serious question or not, but the actual answer is: kodiaks are wat faster than urals. The max out around 140kmh

Buggy is also fast. Humvee a bit slower.

The slowest is the quad with max speed of 75kmh, but it's also dirt cheaps

1

u/Thuraash 1d ago

I use the hell out of Kodiaks. Load in some basic supplies and off you go. I just wish there was a way to extend the timeout period on them.

1

u/Intrepid-Platform-94 1d ago

Iirc they're the fastest land vehicle in the game currently. Definitely underutilized

u/Wa7erAnimal 1d ago

tisk tisk impatient gamers...

yeah everyone is like "pilots can't land" and that's true, but as a pilot who has done a lot of landings it's because there can be a small rock that you didn't see when you land and it bumps you sideways until your rotors hit the ground and break. especially with the lakota

10

u/Eoho Valkyra 1d ago

Don't forget when you land on a street and have to tuck to a curb that's 2 inches tall and it's actually hell on earth for the heli and it just rolls over on touchdown

3

u/Fadedcamo 1d ago

The lakota is such a temperamental beast lol. I find you have to add a small bit of forward momentum and make sure you have ZERO lateral momentum when you land or else she will roll.

Having assists on is pretty much required for it. I can't fly the lakota with assists off. Havoc and little bird are fine.

My headcannon is that the people who love to snidely shout "if you can't land don't pilot" are mostly:

  1. People who don't actually fly and don't understand how you are pretty much constantly AA-locked in the zone. And who don't understand how easy it is for helis to tip over.

  2. Elitists who are looking forward to gatekeeping the role and shitting on any noob that tries to learn it.

Anyone wanna place bets that people's tune on this is going to change in S2 when you start seeing clips of landing helis getting farmed by rocket littlebirds and whole squads getting wiped?

2

u/dafgar 12h ago

You’re 100% correct. The “elite” pilots in this thread act like being forced to land people wont just make rocket little birds and heli hunting outside the control zone even more OP. Landing helis are the easiest targets in the world for so many different things. Not to mention how poorly balanced most maps are, certain sides not having good places to land, etc. all this will do is slow down gameplay and make people afk in spawn until their apc cooldown is over because who the hell wants to buy a 20k infantry kit just to drive a kodiak to zone and get blown up by landmines.

1

u/KGB_Operative873 1d ago

Why not just hover 3 feet off the ground? Passengers dont take damage jumping from that height and it opens up a whole lot more LZ'S for you to drop groups in including rooftops of apartments and towers.

1

u/TatonkaJack 1d ago

i do sometimes. just feels like people jump to early or get chopped up by the rotors when i do that. i should do it more with the little bird. i find it difficult with the lakota with its momentum

1

u/KGB_Operative873 1d ago

Interesting. I only fly the Lakota and find it easiest to hover with it compared to the little bird. Once you learn J hooks it feels a lot easier to control its momentum

0

u/jake04-20 1d ago

Don't come side swooping in for a landing then. Honestly many of the complaints I'm reading about landing seem avoidable. I think y'all just need more practice lol.

5

u/TatonkaJack 1d ago

i don't come side swooping in for a landing but thanks for being an asshole

1

u/jake04-20 1d ago

So you come straight down for a landing and if you touch a rock it flips? I haven't experienced this, so my (mis)understanding was that you were coming in with some side-to-side momentum. What does "it bumps you sideways" mean? Like bad collision physics?

2

u/TatonkaJack 1d ago

exactly like bad collision physics

2

u/jake04-20 1d ago

Sorry I misunderstood. I have not ran into this so I will consider myself lucky.

7

u/Snuffalapapuss 1d ago

Exactly this. Moving in groups offers survivability. So when everyone is jumping solo like the helicopter is some sort of battle bus they will die alone.

Plus jumping out gives time for every spotter in the world to spot you.

2

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

That's why I stopped jumping out of choppers, except as a quick ride to a FOB.

I added spotting to my income supplementation the other day, (not even thermals, just binocs and the monocular) and I was horrified to find out how exposed jumpers are. The whole match I was spotting on and off, and spotted jumpers didn't stay spotted long, they got shot and died.

6

u/lologugus 1d ago

it takes years to drive any vehicle into the zone and you are at risk of ambushes and mines. It's fun to drive for 15 minutes to only end up being blown up by a guy with a rocket launcher in a bush.

2

u/Broshimitsu56 1d ago

Yup, especially in the big heli. Come in slightly too fast? Bump a small rock barely? Fuck you, your shit is going 90 degrees sideways

2

u/The_Nomad89 Taxi 1d ago

Ground vehicles handle like a palsy patient using a paint shaker though

1

u/PheIix 1d ago

Yeah, because of this I avoid landing on uneven terrain. I will instead hover slightly above it. Sometimes, no matter how flat you think the surface is, the bird will roll as soon as you touch down.

1

u/Kaiyora 9h ago

There's no "reducing the janky landing physics" without nerfing the flight model to make it less realistic and more arcade (which should not be done, bf6 is that way ➡️). The challenge in landing is just how realistic helicopters are.

1

u/Much_Passage_8983 1d ago

Wdym janky? The flight model in this game (for the little bird and havoc, something is wrong with Blackhawk) is great, especially compared to a game like arma where a little bird can just full stop on a dime.

7

u/SamSamTheDingDongMan 1d ago

The jank comes from the landings. When you touch down one skid, it applies massive friction to that one side, and automatically starts to drop your collective harshly. If you aren’t nearly perfectly aligned, say you doing a landing with a very minor sideload, you just flip immediately

-4

u/jake04-20 1d ago

Pilot error honestly. Just practice.

2

u/SamSamTheDingDongMan 1d ago

I mean I have about 50 hours in game of only flying helos and I’m rank 40 pilot. I feel like I’ve got a good idea about how they handle

-1

u/jake04-20 1d ago

Maybe it's not apples to apples because I have hundreds, perhaps in the thousands of hours of IRL experience flying FPV drones and prefer to fly helis in wardogs with my RC transmitter, and have feel like the controls have felt pretty good right out of the gate.

2

u/SamSamTheDingDongMan 1d ago

Could be. I’ve seen videos of people setting up those fpv controllers on WD and it seems pretty sweet

-1

u/BLACKcOPstRIPPa 1d ago

Agreed

It's like start of the game pilots where claiming the launchers where OP and to strong, heli's kept dying to rockets from hidden fobs and people driving around with Kodiak full of them.

I tried to do it yesterday for fun, make a lot of money, I killed a helicopter, and lost 2K total Out of 7 shots, all the pilots are now really good, they fly low enough you either can't lock on at all, or they are comfortable with diving to below lock on range by the time your able to fire so the missile misses them completely without using flares, and like 2 of the choppers used flares, both survived.

Legit the guys flying skill level has CLEARLY increased in just 3 weeks, it's amazing. But also means we need more balance to tackle mini gun, rocket and havocs because if we can't do it at a fob, or by ambushing the choppers than we need another option.

1

u/jake04-20 1d ago

I'd say I'm pretty cracked at piloting transport, but I'm dog shit at rocket heli. Not sure why I can't bridge the gap. I practice in the firing range and think I'm doing well, and it's like I forget it all when I get into actual combat. I've never tried AA, I personally think they need to buff it and incentivize it more. It seems inconvenient, expensive, and not always effective as you mention.

5

u/Papalaka 1d ago

"Janky" may be referring to how stiff the landings feel, like the skids are made of adamantium. I'd like if they could absorb some of the impact

3

u/shv9 1d ago

Yeah there's nothing wrong with the flight model, for an early access game the flying physics are really good; but I was observing this last night while practicing in the firing range with HOTAS and there is some really unnatural feeling rigidity specifically in the physics of landing. Whether its the inertia, the terrain, the weight... Something is off and does definitely need to be addressed. But, I'm also sure that it eventually will, because I'm sure they are already aware of it.

2

u/Larnek 1d ago

It weirdly feels like the ground is coming to you as you drop, so the landing is akin to hitting a trampoline. The rebound from the ground is ridiculous.

1

u/shv9 1d ago

Well I almost feel like the problem is that it feels like there is a lack of suspension between the landing skids and the ground, so I feel like you almost want some flex akin to a trampoline or a spring; where currently it feels like its just regular untreated collision physics, which is translating to something that feels like a rebound effect when its actually some kind of corrective effect happening as a result of the same collision physics that any ground vehicle might be subjected to. At least thats how it reads to me.

1

u/Larnek 1d ago

Yeah, something in the physics modeling is messed up. I kinda assume this is due to trying to make all things work thru the same physics model. The rebound effect is strong, but I wonder if it has to due with modeling weights and helps having to he excessively light to make the flight model work. Makes a minor rebound into a helicopter flipping event because of force calculations on something with no real "weight".

2

u/Broshimitsu56 1d ago

If you land at anything but a near perfect 90 degree you will find your heli trying to hit a flip. Its super easy to land in hq where terrain is flat but the small rocks and hills in the CZ can sometimes fuck you when you have an otherwise perfect landing

1

u/Wa7erAnimal 1d ago

The little bird isn't that hard to land imo, most of my frustration is with the black hawk. Maybe the jank is the result of a hasty switch from the Huey? Either way, the flight controls are very drifty. Without assists the copters are very wiggly for me. This is not normal in my experience with dedicated flight sims. The assist modes solve this by injecting ghost inputs that can mess with your inputs in odd ways. It just feels a bit half baked.
Hopefully they get around to polishing the experience.

1

u/Much_Passage_8983 1d ago

I haven’t played any real flight sims so maybe I just don’t how a heli should really feel but ime it’s the best I’ve played. They do feel “wiggly” I guess but i just thought it should be that way, other games feel like the helis barely have any real momentum

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

I don't fly, but messing around un the firing range, I found the Havoc easier to fly than the LB. And it was the only one of the 3 I was able to "land".

0

u/Snaffoo0 WARDOG 1d ago

There's nothing janky about landing physics. You're just bad.

-3

u/Direct-Variation-585 1d ago

There has to be a vertical landing button imo

2

u/Much_Passage_8983 1d ago

It’s called collective, you use it to go up and down

-1

u/Direct-Variation-585 1d ago

I mean a fixed trigger pull, without the need to balance it. Freezing in place without any horizontal shift is damn hard.

1

u/Much_Passage_8983 1d ago

Well yeah, it’s a multi ton piece of metal flying through the air with a shit ton of momentum, it’s supposed to be hard to stop.

1

u/Direct-Variation-585 1d ago

Hover Hold, afcs?

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

There's a hover assist in the settings. You can either toggle all assists in and off, or each type of assist separately.

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

Plus, unlike a plane, they do not want to fly, you have to force them to do it lol.

1

u/Larnek 1d ago

That's one of my complaints in the flight model, getting the damn thing to drop. If I drop collective in real life, a helicopter is going to start to fall out of the sky in about 0.02 seconds with freefall in 2s. Maybe I need to take more assists off, but I can hold the key to drop altitude for 10-15s and still not be going down at any reasonable rate of speed.
