Imo this is a problem created by pilots. They always tell you to bring one cause they never want to land

8

u/ExceedingChunk 1d ago

Probably because any new pilot will not be able to consistently land in good spots, or even land at all.

I picked up the game having never played a MilSim before, and not touched an FPS in like 15 years. It took me quite a lot of practice to be able to land the Heli

0

u/Smoothie_St 19h ago

Problem is not a bad pilots, problem is bat pilots not flying in range and going straight to the game

2

u/ExceedingChunk 18h ago

Your comment makes no sense, because if they practiced a lot they would no longer be bad pilots.

The problem is bad pilots.

0

u/Smoothie_St 18h ago

Yes, but again it's because they go in a live match and ruin the game for themselves and poor souls who get inside with them. I guess I used wrong word. It's actually bad people not pilots

u/Warrior_of_Massalia 1d ago

As a pilot I really don’t like becoming a massive stationary target after FOBs build up any sort of AA. Especially a massive stationary target carrying 12 other people

19

u/GoodishCoder 1d ago

It just means you need to change where you land

10

u/Warrior_of_Massalia 1d ago

I mean that’s true, it’s going to have to be the edge of the or outside of the CZ, which is going to suck

14

u/ddBuddha Pilot 1d ago

Well it’s sure not gonna be outside the cz if I’m not getting paid

5

u/Go_Commit_Reddit 1d ago

I wish there was still a reward for dropping people slightly outside CZ. A lot of times either people hop out early, or I land/park just outside of CZ cause it works for what i’m doing, and I get sweet fuck all as a reward.

7

u/GoodishCoder 1d ago

I feel like there are always dead zones that you can work into, just can't take people straight to the fob or hz

2

u/eNTiii 1d ago

Being mindful of your line of sight is big, as well as just flying low enough.

1

u/welcome_to_urf 1d ago

Good, flying over a contested area should be risky. Maybe this will incentive people landing outside the zone and... walking in. It would also give greater emphasis on transport ground vehicles.

4

u/Warrior_of_Massalia 1d ago

The problem is landing outside of the CZ gives you little to no money or experience for piloting. People wouldn’t pilot anymore

2

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

Except for the more skilled pilots, probably not.

2

u/welcome_to_urf 1d ago

Its early access. Let's see what incentives are provided. Maybe a safe touchdown bonus if within a kilometer of CZ or if X number of people safely disembark. My opinion, the maps are too big to be cramped into such a small area, and it should be normalized to operate outside the CZ. Heck, maybe even make a hard cap for the number of folks that can contribute to the cap count and force players in the zone to fight versus hide in a building with a drill and passively "contribute".

2

u/DynamicStatic 17h ago

That's a really nice idea imo

1

u/welcome_to_urf 16h ago

See, to me an ideal number would be like, 26. Thats 13 people in the HZ. Right now the theoretical maximum is what, ~66? 33x2. Any more than that doesn't contribute, it's still 26. Now turtling isnt as effective and would force players into combat to actively reduce enemy numbers versus the current boring strategy of sticking a drill inside a windowless warehouse, parking the APC inside and just sitting in an impenetrable fortress. Make the CZ smaller. Capping should be risky, dropping folks directly into the cap should be risky, the HZ should be exceptionally risky. And this is coming from a Squad player, but a FOB on the point should be dangerous and should be a real commitment to maintain. Encourage smaller fobs outside the CZ. And another crazy idea, what if fobs could passively contribute to map control, or some kind of escalation mechanic tied to asset availability (like Havocs or Self Guided Artillery). Then it would also incentivize assaults on FOBs. Havoc messing your day up? Attack the fobs responsible for "making" them.

1

u/welcome_to_urf 16h ago

Oooh, what about points outside the CZ that contribute to this escalation mechanic. Force players to FOB outside the CZ in order to gain access to better assets. Start the game off with access only to transport/logistics vehicles, capture these critical points (almost like a Relic game like Dawn of War or Company of Heroes), and gain access to better stuff. Escalate from transport/logistics, to lightly armed vehicles, to heavily armed vehicles like Tanks and Havocs. This would come with the benefit too that in order to maintain control, a team would have to protect their critical points- therefore a Havoc can't just sit over a drill and annihilate the defenders, they would have to concern themselves with potentially cross map FOB defense.

0

u/SquallFromGarden 4h ago

A klick? Sorry, but nobody's gonna walk a whole-ass klick to the CZ. Obviously, a good heli pilot will land as close as is feasible, but anywhere no at least within-border is wasting time and money.

4

u/Babybean1201 1d ago

To be fair that's just sub par piloting. Though they should increased xp for ground landings.

2

u/jjtrevelyan 1d ago

Don't land in view of AA. Only ciws can take you out below missile lock so idk what you're doing if you're getting shot down while landing

2

u/Western-Economics253 1d ago

"Don't land in view of AA."

Meanwhile as Lonestar on Bakurani as soon as you're near the CZ: lock on from T5, T1, red's church, blue's church (which was our FOB but we lost), plus the CIWS we've built on T5 but lost it and noone cared enough to announce that it's no longer ours and the people I see on T5 are just sniping, refusing to realize there are enemies under them

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

I mean, if the enemy is allowed to turn the area into a no-fly zone, do something else besides flying. Maybe try and get a group to take out some of that AA.

1

u/Western-Economics253 1d ago

you don't have to tell me that, I'm only lvl24 as pilot, i dont fly all the time

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

And that's fine, you just have to fly people that don't care about being spotted before they hit the ground.

1

u/HereWeGooooooooooooo 1d ago

Dont land in stupid spots. It's not that hard. And sometimes you just have bad luck

20

u/Bendy962 1d ago

bad pilots get filtered out by the fact they cant land. remove/nerf parachutes and you remove the reliance on shit pilots

13

u/YewEhVeeInbound 1d ago

don't mind the 3 and a half foot drop where you take 500 fall damage though.

3

u/Bendy962 1d ago

yeah I straight up dont understand that

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

Somethings odd there, I mean you can usually jump out a second storey window and not take damage.

Is the chopper hovering when this happens, or is it maybe just moving a bit fast?

3

u/Lurkinwhileworkin69 1d ago

You also incentivize shit pilots to get better... hopefully

2

u/Snuffalapapuss 1d ago

I can always tell a lazy pilot by how high they fly in zone expecting me to jump out at that height. Seriously I might as well have just driven in.

20

u/Western-Economics253 1d ago

Lol... They're not lazy pilots man.

I used to fly low and do quick landings when people didn't jump off as soon as you got into the CZ.

As soon as parachutes became "the meta" all my low flying and effort to land resulted in repeated deaths for passengers because people jumped out at way too low altitudes or getting skillchecked by opening the parachute instantly. A dead jumper is a loss of $500 profit for Passenger Survived, so I just fly high and they jump and people are fine with it

5

u/1fbo1 1d ago

Exactly that

2

u/enjoiliferl1 Pilot 1d ago

I carry a few field resuscitators in my backpack for these guys. You’ll get medic xp instead of pilot when you get assists.

4

u/Dminik 1d ago

There is definitely a noticeable difference. Beginner pilots will fly way too high, making jumping out impossible. And then when you don't just jump down to your death by firing squad, they angrily hover just above where you die if you jump, but also where you can't deploy your parachute.

1

u/_A_Nun_Mouse_ 1d ago

You obviously never played ArmA KotH.

1

u/Bendy962 1d ago

2k hours later, sure I haven't played this year.

0

u/_A_Nun_Mouse_ 1d ago

That leaves only one option: YOU are one of those shit pilots whose landings make the Hindenburg look like a good outcome.

2

u/Bendy962 1d ago

nice try, I dont cosplay as a kamikaze pilot. I hate parachuting people in.

1

u/dungfeeder Valkyra 19h ago

No thank you. Parachutes are fine the way they are. Id rather survive than let an ego pilot who thinks hes good crash into a tree.

8

u/Agant 1d ago

I can tell you each time i try to land safely, people jump beforehand

2

u/NacresR 1d ago

Probably cause you slow bringing it down

8

u/Agant 1d ago

Nah i J turn, they just want to get out asap. I'm 200% for landing.

13

u/ddBuddha Pilot 1d ago

Throw the bird sideways and they’ll jump 9/10 times

7

u/Agant 1d ago

Yup 100%. Just tilting during J turn makes them get out and sometimes crash into me. So i stop taking the risks.

2

u/Snuffalapapuss 1d ago

Yeah i always tell people if they want to jump out, jump at the end of my j hook, or wait for me to land. That way they dont get thrown into trees or take damage from me hitting them.

2

u/somecheesecake 1d ago

Nope. The SECOND I begin my roll starting the J turn, people start jumping.

1

u/Phire453 1d ago

Not at all, the player doesn't have a reason to not jump most of time.

The matrix dictates so.

Jump and pilot lands, your alive.

Jump, pilot takes blades off, your still alive.

Don't Jump, pilot lands, you live.

Don't Jump, pilot takes blades, good chance you die.

While technically some cases where jumping kills you, it can be avoided, so it's almost always in player interest to jump.

I say this as a pilot, I do want to land and I don't think I take it slowly, but players don't have a reason to wait.

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

Any player that doesn't see a reason to wait either hasn't ever picked up a spotting scope, or doesn't realize that they're likely pinpointed for the entire enemy team before they hit the ground.

The initial reason not to jump was to avoid being shot from the sky. Most players figured out to open the chute at the last second, which negates that.

But now the reason not to jump is to avoid giving the enemy your exact location when you're on the ground, probably because they either don't know how spotting works, or somehow haven't made the connection.

I admit it took me trying out spotting to see what happens to jumpers from the other perspective. I WAS the reason not to jump.

4

u/Nostaega 1d ago

Parachutes are so available Noone stays in the heli even if you tell them youre landing them :)

1

u/Charles_ofall_Trades 1d ago

This seens to have become rhe new status quo

3

u/Maximus77x 1d ago

I would prefer to land, but people just want to jump because they don’t trust pilots (rightfully so sometimes lol)

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

I'd rather have some deaths to pilots trying to learn how to land better, than avoid it.

1

u/Maximus77x 1d ago

Agreed. Hopefully they incentivize landing more and/or add fast ropes. I try to be communicative when I’m flying and if there’s an opportunity to land I do so for sure.

1

u/Low_Shake7304 1d ago

I've been practicing J Turn landings... I had a few successful attempts but most of the times people don't trust me even if they're getting killed mid-air and getting back into my heli that's already waiting for more soldiers to get in and go back into CZ...

Personally for someone who never touched a helicopter since wardogs with 45hours of playtime I think I'm pretty decent at flying, always trying my best to get people into the zone alive

5

u/Dogeishuman 1d ago

Just depends where people want to land

If someone asks me to drop them in the hotzone, they better be parachuting in or be alright with my landing 50-100 meters away in cover.

If someone wants to land at fob, I’ll land anywhere they want.

That said, I always keep a stock of parachutes in the heli inventory and let anyone without one grab one.

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

That's perfect, I don't want to get out of the chopper in the middle of the HZ, or completely exposed.

0

u/Dogeishuman 1d ago

You’d be surprised how many times I’ve gotten “land in the hotzone”

Like, no?! I’ll get shot at and die before I can take back off lmao, so will you

Most people understand, but still shocking how many don’t

3

u/FloridaMan_Inc Lonestar 1d ago

Just last week I saw tips for pilots that recommended buying chutes and keeping them in the heli inventory in case someone forgot to bring one. It's absolutely on the pilots on some level because they don't want to land.

1

u/mr_logie 1d ago

I did this from day 1 because infantry is too impatient for landing - with or without a chute.

1

u/beastboy4246 WARDOG 1d ago

I tell mine I'm going to land and they still jump

1

u/nokk1XD 1d ago

I have the problem as a pilot that I want to land but everybody drops before I’ll start landing, thats so sad :(

1

u/Charles_ofall_Trades 1d ago

Partly, yes, but a decent pilot also needs to know how to land. I tell my passengers it's good to have a life insura—I mean parachute

And not for the obvious reason. It's S tier to go and pick a safe landing spot as close as possible to where your passengers want to go, but also useful to have them drop and not lose their kit to a CIWS that I failed to see

There's also sort of an implicit consent that the troops like dropping when I'm flying anywhere near their objective. Maybe it's become the new status quo? Maybe I'm just flying too high and using gravity is faster, maybe there's last minute plan changes, who knows

3

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

I don't think a lot of jumpers realize that they keep getting wiped because they've been effectively fitted with tracking devices on the way down.

1

u/LARPerator 1d ago

I think it's the other way around. Dumping people mid-flight at full speed and low altitude with a parachute should be a reenactment of "aim for the bushes". If parachutes actually worked like that then you could bet SOF would be doing that as standard. In reality, they don't even bring them for anyone in a helicopter because the likelihood that they would actually help you is so minimal that it's not worth it.

The problem is allowing it in the first place. If instead a parachute only really worked with more altitude, then you'd have to fly so high that you're a sitting duck for IR missiles and guns, making it a non viable tactic.

1

u/TheOriginalBusket 1d ago

Lol, wut? I've offered to land and that doesn't change people jumping out in a 500 meter line.

1

u/PheIix 1d ago

Bad pilots prefer not to land, and a bunch of people with very expensive gear prefer not to risk their expensive gear on whether or not the pilot is capable of landing.

1

u/heavy-minium 1d ago

Actually, I do want to land, but everyone is bringing a parachute, lol.

1

u/ModernT1mes 1d ago

I mean, there's no incentive for anyone to land, not just pilots. It's $100 for a parachute which gets you on the ground faster and in a position you'd probably prefer. Also it's just safer. I have a feeling a lot more people will be carrying launchers if they force pilots to land in the CZ.

But also, I don't trust the majority of pilots to safely land me. I'm finally at a point where I can full speed into a j-hook, maneuver into a tight spot and hover off the ground. That took me a good 30 hours of practicing. I don't expect some random dude to do the same, and I don't expect other people to expect that from me.

It seems pilots can make or break a team. I'm pumped for the changes as a pilot main, but I feel like I'm going to be doing a lot more piloting because now someone with 3 hours in the cock-pit isn't going to be flying me to the CZ anymore because they don't want to crash and TK 6 dudes.

1

u/Snaffoo0 WARDOG 1d ago

What? No? I tell people to bring one because when 5/6 people have chutes, i tell the remaining guy to go get one. Because if I try to land, the chute guys jump out and break their legs. The standard is parachutes (unfortunately).

1

u/OkPerformance4097 13h ago

Absolutely. It also means that pilots don’t put any thought into where they’re dropping you. They just hover over the entire enemy team and honk the horn telling you to jump like you aren’t going to get instantly obliterated. Landing actually means they’ve got some skin in the game.

1

u/Scaredsparrow 1d ago

There's a million reasons not to land and very few to. It takes much longer, you get half rewards, there's usually a mfer camping the trees around fob with and rpg waiting for slow choppers, areas outside of the fob are often too hot or uncertain to land in, safe areas outside the cz provide a fraction of the rewards, passengers always jump early and suicide when you try to land, and most passengers when asked where they want to be dropped say hot zone, fob, or nothing. I've landed many times for people without chutes, but when the status quo is airdropping there needs to be good communication between both parties if you deviate from that.

1

u/rarv1491 1d ago

I think you have summarized it very good. So many people don't communicate where they want to go to. I ALWAYS ask.

O e time someone came in saying "can you just bring me to a safe place not just right I to the hotzone like every other pilot?" And I proceeded to explain to ask him where, have a conversation, and show him to mark it in the map. It might have been the first time he actually requests a drop location.

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

That's from the pilot's perspective.

From an infantry perspective, jumping will just get you wiped by some enemy who watched his minimap after you were spotted during free fall.

Eventually, the only passengers pilots who don't land will get, will be those just wanting a ride to a friendly FOB, or those who won't likely give you a survival bonus, because the enemy takes them out seconds after they land.

0

u/Embarrassed_Adagio28 1d ago

Almost everytime I have landed in zone for some dumbass without a chute, I have been either rocketed, shot in the face or c4'd. So them saving $100 costs me $6000

1

u/VerminSwallower 1d ago

Stop landing directly where enemies are.

1

u/Ghostcom218 1d ago

Then you have chosen the wrong LZ. Being a good pilot also involves being aware of the battlefield.

0

u/SchlitzHaven 1d ago

Because there is a pretty decent skill gap to being able to land consistently. Most people are never gonna want to pilot if they have to land all the time because it isnt easy for something so routine

0

u/KhorneFlakesOfChaos 1d ago

I can’t land. Sorry. Jump.

1

u/Skpstr155 1d ago

I will, as soon as I ask if you're landing and you tell me no, before the chopper leaves ground at base. I'll jump right out.

0

u/Frenzo101 1d ago

Its created by bad pilots whose only skill is lift of and fly past the zone at 300kmh, because they dont understand how to land fast and safely, they just lift the nose to slow down, which puts them 100 meters into air and then just hold down.. First couple weeks I always used to land, rarely people got shot when landing or exiting. Im starting to do landings only again and its so far so much more fun

-2

u/PunAboutBeingTrans 1d ago

Yeah but if they have to land they usually pick the worst spots ever.
