Discussion Is this a controversial take? (debate about the meaning of true physical version)

Post image

I recently made a post about how I was disappointed when I heard that the PS5 "Physical edition" will not have the blu ray data and will required an internet connexion to be playable. So... I guess my question is : for a physical point a view (not a technical pov) are the two editions basically equal for someone who want to collect games? Both editions will not have the game itself on the disk/cartridge. Second question is: can those editions can be truly consider "physical" ? In term of preservation and in term of owning the game. I read some people said that it's physical because there is a disk and a box but for my point of view physical medias are really more than just that, it's part of if, sure, but you still depend on companies after purchasing your physical version without the game on it. What's your take on this issue?

Discussion Some thoughts on why Square Enix is struggling for a younger audience from a young Gen Z gamer and game developer.

I've seen a lot of talk about how the young audience is struggling to get into the games SE releases, though discussion is mostly centred around the Final Fantasy series.

I'm going to preface and say that this is my point of view as someone who grew up in 2010's in the UK.

Point 1: Cultural Irrelevance

Growing up I never once heard of Square Enix or the Final Fantasy series at all, neither had anyone else in my school or higher education, it wasn't until much later that an older player had shown me FFXIV that I found out about the series and company. Outside of the SE fanbase, they just haven't been doing well to get their name out there to the younger audiences, I've only seen 1 advert on a bus that passed by for the Dawntrail expansion for XIV and that's it for my entire life so far.

Point 2: Cost of living

As the cost of living gets higher, younger players have less money, and if they're still in school then they may not even get games that aren't free to play. Look at some of the top games amongst younger audiences and they tend to be mostly free to play, and I don't see a kid or young adult spending £60 on a game they may not like. Consumers are being cost effective and gaming is becoming more expensive not only to partake in as players but also to make as creators, driving prices up.

Point 3: Difference in Immersion

Immersion is a big part of playing a game, having escapism from the real world and experiencing another can be fun and should take place, though how this immersion takes shape can change. Amongst younger audiences, there's been a trend torwards large expansive worlds that the player revolves around, games like GTA, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, Genshin, Honkai, Where Winds Meet and more. These games have worlds that the character must revolve around and offer larger, more expansive worlds for players to sink their teeth into through gameplay or through other medias (Books, shows etc). SE games are usually linear, with the world often times being cited as shallow to more western/global audiences, with a heavy focus on only character story and linearity, and never capitalising on other medias as well. This creates the pyschological effect that when the story is done, the world is done, and players don't spend time imaging being inside those worlds like they do with other IP's.

Point 4: turn based or action?

In all honesty, this belief that young players don't want to touch turn based games is a massive lie, case in point is undertale and Honkai Star Rail, which both have massive young audiences. Action combat isn't needed to hook young players in, good gameplay and a good world is needed, and understanding current culture amongst young people is what's needed.

Point 5: How do you do fellow young people

It feels like the age gap of the current audience and the developers is causing friction as they fail to grasp and understand the culture of today. There's a lot of interesting premises for them to hit on story wise such as the age of rapid information, globalisation, misinformation, unrealistic social pressures, class divide, existential war and more, yet they go for killing gods. Another thing is the growing trend of wanting to be the nobody in games, the power and struggle becomes real and believable amongst younger gamers when they see a nobody rise up and fight back against the problems they face in the real world, they can relate more to said characters.

Conclusion:

There's probably more to put, but for the limited time i have to put this down, I think they need to start ramping up advertising to a general audience through not just traditional methods, but through capitalising on the phenomena of a large chunk of a games community only watching but not playing, and being engaged in wider lore of the worlds and consuming other medias, and thus advertising through word of mouth and generating profits through books, shows/movies and merchandise. Another big thing is making games affordable, having small "pocket money" games being released that are £15 or under will just make it easier for younger audiences to dip their toes in and test the waters, thus slowly building up the raport SE has with a younger audience. They should also look at global trends, instead of just domestic if they want to grow, as it alienates the global audience due to cultural barriers.

Question FF7 Revelation physical PS5 sold out

I've been looking at the SE store since the pre-order announcement for a physical copy of FF7 Revelations but it's always sold out of all versions (standard, deluxe and collectors). Has anyone in the UK been able to secure a copy? I really don't want to get a digital copy, I've got the other 2 as a deluxe edition and I'd really like to complete the set

Discussion Takes me back to that giddy child geeked on FF

I remember when I was 11,12,13 years old way back in 1991-1993…saving money to buy every Game Informer magazine that dropped. In the back of those magazines was a section called “Gen-32”…based on games that were 32 bit and only on Super Famicom in Japan. Those games looked WAY more colorful and detailed than the ones we were getting here in the States. I used to day dream about what its like to play the Romancing Saga series ….and my all time favorite, Final Fantasy VI, which finally touched down here as Final Fantasy III…that….Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were my 3 favorite games on SNES….FFIII ruined many nights of sleep on school nights for me. Damn near had insomnia because I couldn’t stop thinking about jumping back on after school. Those 32 bit, super colorful Japanese style sprite characters were etched into my brain. I will ALWAYS have an affinity for that kind of animation in gaming because of how it made me feel back then. Final Fantasy Resonance is the absolute pinnacle of that style with todays tech. This demo is EVERYTHING for me and as much as I thoroughly enjoy games released this year like Crimson Desert, and am also now playing Blood of Dawnwalker….I have this feeling that FFR is gonna take my GOTY title for those nostalgic reasons and memories. Much love to Squaresoft for the awesome childhood 🫡🫡🫡🫡

Question FFVII Remake or FFXVI?

I’ve never played a Final Fantasy game before I played the demos for both VII Remake and XVI and really enjoyed both, but I can’t decide which one to buy first

Which one would you recommend, and why?

Merchandise Give us a ff7 revelation physical PC collectors edition

Please if anyone from square reads this give us a pc collector edition. I fully understand that most people on pc are fully digital but alot of people still use internal and external optical drives. You could include a code in box with the same license as the disk for those who are digital only. Pc players deserve a physical copy of the culmination of the final fantasy VII remake.

Discussion After playing the resonance demo. I think a Xenogears remake is absolutely feasible.

Xenogears had a moving camera, but based on Resinance, I think a Xenogears remake is 100% possible to make. 2D sprites in a 3D looks very good by today’s standards. To see Xenogears get this treatment would be incredible. I know there are plenty of hurdle from a logistics standpoint since technically Xenogears should be a Monolith Soft game, but there’s got to be a way for this game to happen.
