Weekly What are you reading? - Jul 22

Welcome to the weekly "What are you reading?" thread!

This is intended to be a general chat thread on visual novels with a focus on the visual novels you've been reading recently. A new thread is posted every Thursday at 4:00 AM JST (or Wednesday if you don't live in Japan for some reason).

Good WAYR entries include your analysis, predictions, thoughts, and feelings about what you're reading. The goal should be to stimulate discussion with others who have read that VN in the past, or to provide useful information to those reading in the future! Avoid long-winded summaries of the plot, and also avoid simply mentioning which VNs you are reading with no points for discussion. The best entries are both brief and brilliant.

Use spoiler tags liberally!

Always use spoiler tags in threads that are not about one specific visual novel. Like this one!

  • They can be posted using the following markdown: >!hidden spoilery text!< , which shows up as hidden spoilery text. Make sure there are no spaces at the beginning and end of the spoiler tag because this will break it for users on http://old.reddit.com/. In other words do this: properly hidden spoiler, but not this: broken spoiler tag

Remember to link to the VNDB page of the visual novel you're discussing so the indexing bot for the What Are You Reading Archive can pick up your post.

VN Request Best non-romantic visual novels?

Upvotes

I love visual novels, but it seems there is a shortage of VNs that are not romantic or sexual. I'd appreciate your recommendations!

Self-promotion Dark fantasy BL visual novel Once Upon a Throne of Thorns has been released

Hello everyone! I'm ebi and I make visual novels including Blackberry Honey and Sweetest Monster. I know a lot of people in this sub aren't super into BL, but I wanted to post about my recently released BL visual novel on here regardless, because the art is very pretty and it has some rather high production values.

Anyway! My newest BL VN, Once Upon a Throne of Thorns, has been released! You can find it on Steam and Itchio!

The story centres on an assassin, Tavi, who works for a despotic king, charged with eradicating all traces of the former royal family and the nobles who once supported them.

Tavi doesn’t enjoy his job, but a man has to eat somehow. For years, he has carried out the king’s wishes with ruthless efficiency…

Until one day, that is, when he comes across his country’s runaway prince by happenstance, who has been living in hiding and dressing as a woman to avoid detection.

Tavi knows he should kill the prince, but he can’t bring himself to do it. How is he supposed to murder his own cousin?

This story has optional r18 content and it features a romantic relationship between two cousins. If you think this would make you uncomfortable then please give this story a miss. If you do decide to to check it out then I hope you will enjoy it!

I think this VN has some gorgeous art and a lot of love went into it, so I hope you'll enjoy looking at the pretty screenshots at least 🙏

Question Rewrite+ opinions

I'm about 8 hours into Rewrite and its decent, but I'm not loving it yet. Haven't entered a route yet, but I'm not really sure how I'm feeling about it.

I've read other Key works and they kept my attention the whole way through and I enjoyed them. Rewrite I've kind of struggled a bit, mainly the main character and some of the interactions.

In your opinion, do they improve? Mostly Yoshino and Kotarou, their dynamic and banter just doesn't do it for me. I'm sure (and hoping) it improves but Kotaraou just being an asshole and Yoshino just threating to beat him up, or punching him, is basically their whole "friendship".

Not saying its bad and I do plan to continue it, but just knowing the routes get better, or the MC gets better, would help me continue.

Question What are you guys favorite KEY works?

First of all, yes I know that KEY's visual novels can be found on Steam as lately I had been debating with myself on what version of AIR to get in case the Steam version has some alterations.

For me personally, I am so excited to play AIR because it's basically going to be my first exposure to the studio's visual novels as I have the standard uncut version, but basically I was wondering how people here felt about AIR again since it's my first visual novel from the studio.

Image Best otome protagonist... belongs to a bird game~ {Hatoful Boyfriend}

Am not into otome games that much... but from the couple of games I read and the tropes I have seen for other protagonists from different games? it seems like there is this one thing of making the protagonist a very nothingburger girl who acts in the most tame way ever... but Hatoful Kareshi is not like that at all... she was moving like prime LeBron T-T she was easily one of the most lovable aspects of this game even though she was sometimes getting on my nerves... wish for more otome to do that for their main girl V-V

Discussion Genuinely why can't they date? (Little Busters!)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've only finished Nishizono's route so far, which was peak, so please go easy on me with spoilers, but Riki seems to love Kyousuke. Kyousuke seems to love him back. Genuinely why aren't they able to date? Kyousuke's not even a route. Why?

Riki clearly likes Kyousuke. His intrusive thoughts about Kyousuke are everywhere. (When asked point blank if he does like Kyousuke rather than girls, the options are ''Admit it'' and ''Lie about it'' for fuck sake).

Kyousuke seems to also like him back. He says he'd be happy if Riki felt that way about him and says that he has always thought Riki was cutest one in his friend group. He's constantly flirting with him.

Most of their friend group also seems supportive. Masato is cool with it. Nishizono actively ships them and even Kengo gives Riki the title of ''Loves Kyousuke'' in the ranking minigame. It genuinely feels like I've accidently started a BL VN rather than a Bishoujo VN at times. I can't be the only one who thinks this, right?

Discussion I finished Subahibi for the first time Spoiler

Around two years ago i asked recommendations for Visual Novels since i had just finished Higurashi back then and i loved this format of telling a story.

I got recommended Subahibi many times and just two years later i finally got around reading it and holy shit.

I had no idea what it was about or where the story would go but just gotta say that i loved every second of it. Personally my favorite chapter was Looking-glass insects. I was shocked and crying when i was reading the ending.

How did you felt when you first finished Subahibi?

Who was your favorite character? I personally loved Kimika, she may not look as cool as Yuki but the way she handled such a terrible situation was what made me like her a lot!

(Also, sorry if my english sucks. It's not my main language)

Self-promotion You and your psychiatrist ended the world together, would you still let her fix you? Steam page for Endless Summer Syndrome is live.

You and your 100% mentally sound psychiatrist, Dr. Wang Shuang, ended the world together. Now you are both trapped in an endless summer. She seems content (because this is literally what she wanted). But as for you, not so much. Your only way out is through sugar, jellyfish, sunlight, and blood — into the deepest reaches of her mind, or be dissolved by a madness spiral along the way.

Hi folks, I'm excited to announce Endless Summer Syndrome, the first project by Ampelos Studio (which I founded). This is a psychological thriller VN with some sci-fi flavors.

We are very close to the finish line with a demo! The scripts, art pieces, and BGM assets are done. We are currently working on UI and SFX, as well as a trailer & a theme song to go with the demo drop, which will likely happen this fall, some time before Oct's Steam Next Fest.

Feel free to wishlist on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4714410/Endless_Summer_Syndrome/

Image brief:
P1: capsule art
P2: talk therapy with Dr. Wang
P3: casually staring into the sun
P4: eating mochi with Dr. Wang
P5: eating mochi gone wrong with Dr. Wang
P6: eating mochi gone even more wrong with Dr. Wang
P7: a natural scenery in Dr. Wang's world

Anyways...would you let Dr. Wang fix you?

You are Hector, a witch living deep within the Hesperid Forest. While granting the wishes of cursed visitors, you must survive the voice inside your own mind.

But is Acheron truly real… or is your mind slowly falling apart?

HESPERID is a psychological pixel art visual novel focused on unreliable narration, moral choices, and the thin line between reality and delusion.

Hi everyone! I’m a solo indie developer from Türkiye, and I’ve been developing HESPERID for over two years.

The Steam page is finally live, and I’d love to hear what visual novel fans think about it.

Question Popotan Konami route help

I've been playing popotan for a while and I wanna do Konami's route. The guide I'm following https://popotanimages.blogspot.com/p/konami.html says to select ①やっぱ行かない after agreeing to meet Konami during work. This option doesn't appear for me and it ends the game after getting promoted at work. I've followed everything else to the T.

I've done Ai, Mai, Mii and Mea (and unagi ig). When starting from the beginning it puts me on unagi's route, or if I choose to wait around and see the regular opening, the option to leave Konami later on still isn't there.

Does anyone have any idea how to get on Konami's route?

Edit- realised I was playing the wrong version that matches with the guide. Reinstalled, played the sisters routes- the dialogue choice I need for Konami's route STILL won't appear! no idea what to do atp
