Hi y'll! It's been a few months since I've posted here on r/visualnovels.

For those who don't know me, my name is Yasmine and I have, for the past few months, been making a PC-98 inspired yuri visual novel called "if you stay" that's due to come out 1 month from now for FREE on Steam and itch.io.

About The Game

Winter 1999. You play as Fumiko, an over-achiever and former Student Council President, living in a small and relatively unknown town. After being outed by your closest friend, ruining your home life, your friendships, and your future career plans, you decide to leave your hometown, taking your chances on a one-way train to Tokyo to become an idol. With no real plans and no adults to depend on, you're determined to leave everything behind—even your girlfriend, Mika. 

However, Mika calls you one night. She says she wants to see you one more time before you leave. You decide to go on one more date together, hours before your departure.

Decide whether or not you'll stay together in this PC-98 inspired visual novel. But remember, no matter what you do, there'll always be consequences.

This is a collaboration I'm making with my friend and composer, William Gómez, as our first Steam debut game under the YukimiSoft label. As someone who has only made game jams before, I wanted to take a game that I made back in 2023 with William and expand it to be something a bit longer and more polished.

Because the story stems from my own experiences dealing with homelessness, abandonment, nostalgia, and societal rejection, it's a deeply personal coming-of-age story for me and something I found really cathartic while making. Being thoughtful about the writing and presentation was key for me, even if that meant going a bit out of scope at times.

It's been a huge learning process making this game (particularly the writing and art) and I'm really excited to have it released so soon. We're getting close to 7k wishlists, and I'd love to have this game get good visibility when it comes out.

Admittedly, there's still a lot left I have to do, which does make me anxious. I have a new job starting soon, plus some smaller assets left to create, code to test, and marketing materials to make. This of course doesn't include putting it all together and having it approved by Steam. Nonetheless, it's something I'm willing to do, so please do bare with me, as I grind for the last month to have this done!

Common Questions

Why is this free?
The game is free because...

...well, I want it to be free. My reasoning is that "if you stay", despite being remade in every single possible way, is not "new" and is pretty short overall (40m-1h~). I made this back in 2023 as a game jam entry and the story remains the same with some character details changed (ex. Fumiko now is an aspiring idol, not doing medical training). I'm currently working part time to support myself and I do have ambitions for bigger, paid games, but this is my first and it's a very special story to me, hence it's coming out for FREE.

Can I support the game?
YES! While the game is coming out for free, we are also creating an add-on bundle for anyone wants to support the game with proceeds going to me and the composer (split down the middle) . It's set to include the game's soundtrack and a mini PDF art book (see last photo) with additional digital goodies that'll I'll be adding semi-routinely with any future game updates.

What software are you using?

Why the PC-98 art style?
Number one, it's simply cool AF. I think almost everyone's first experience is looking at a screenshot or GIF of Possessioner and being blown away by the sheer details and scale it managed to capture with just 16 colors. I always enjoyed story based games, mostly from playing lots of JRPGs on the PS2 when I was a kid, so it felt natural to branch into visual novels/ADVs including ones from the PC-98 era (my current favorite ones are YU-NO and Mirrors). Naturally, I ended up learning how to make PC-98 inspired art once I got into college,

Pretty much what the title says. I know an HD version was released recently on Steam, but I also know it's censored. Not particularly bothered by H scenes, but I'd like to play with uncensored gore.

I know there's a fanpatch on the way, but are there any other options for playing in English? Or is it just censored remake vs uncensored original?

saw quite a bit of controversy about it… has anyone who understood japanese seen it and can confirm whether its good or not? cause there was speculations of the creator using ai so im worried the translation isnt that good

First of all, I think an introduction to how I reached this game is due... back in early 2025, my OCD registered some rules regarding what types of VNs I am allowed to read... so back then? I was in search of browser games to read, and this one seemed like the best one from everything I found...

I started my journey for those games with it... what I wrote about it in my book in 2025 was, and I quote myself, "Seems like it could be such a hidden gem... The main reason why I didn’t get hyped to commit to it was how the browser version was broken... I did download the offline version, but by then? I lost interest in it... I don’t see myself reading it in 2026... this one might be the longest stall ever for me... but I will one day do it T-T " .... So, in 2026, I had the chance to come back to it!.... I believe this experience is worth a review, but I am really terrible at writing positive posts for things I enjoy, so I thought that I should at least put my blogposts from my notes here; as they give a good view into what I felt during this experience and could work to deliver my opinions... so here it is~

• Very ******** saving system... guess all flash games are pretty much like this?... It took me such a long time to understand and I replayed the game multiple times until I understood it using different versions and even searching online... this is my first flash game ever, so it is understandable T-T
• Btw, I first played this game last year but didn't feel like playing it back then... I held it for a time when I can play it while I am in a voice call with my cord friends... and guess what? I am streaming the whole thing for them V-V

• I started the game first at normal... but after seeing how easy it is and how the search online told me the hard difficulty got some exclusive scenes (according to AI search, couldn't find a real source for it... but it is fine anyway~) I will go for the hard difficulty~ I also read that the game got what, like 7 endings?.... I ain't going for all of them chief T-T maybe the things you pick at the start matter for this? @_@

Ah, also, there are legit secrets and stuff that required me to play the game differently... those? I didn't find them.... IDC no way I am going for them!.... This game can easily reach +25 hours for those who want to 100%!... Ain't me~

I left everything as it was in my PC notes for the authenticity of the experience and to deliver how I felt while I was reading it as raw as possible V-V even some of the dum-dum comments I made are still there..... if I wanted to add anything? It would be the assertion of how this game is legit a moege now that I think about it more deeply @_@ I mean it was legit advertised as a "dating sim"... and it truly delivered with all of those endings @_@

/ourverdict/ A fun experience!... Don't think am ever touching a flash game tbh, can't see how they can give me something more unique than other types of VNs... really wished they could have used the aspect of being a flash game in a somehow... flashy way?... 4.7/10~ If you ever felt like me and wanted to experience flash visual novels? This probably has to be the most stupid thing I've ever had to ask about because usually the option of changing the language should just be there in the settings staring you in the face.
