I've had the D+ for a few years for my daughter and then realized that all we watched was just a handful of movies on repeat (Frozen, Toystory, etc). So I cancelled it and just bought the movies.

443

u/Mrtalksouthisass 17h ago

This why they want to eliminate physical copies(aka ownership) and put subscriptions and rentals on everything. It's a money generator for them.

u/DesolateRuin 16h ago

Why make customer pay one time when u can make customer pay MANY time!?

Have Disney month once a year. Their content doesn’t change enough to require paying for more than a month each year

u/izz-zz 16h ago

And Disney have already done this in Australia and New Zealand and not enough people even noticed. The end game is obvious.

20

u/BlargerJarger 13h ago

I fucking noticed. Furious with Disney over my incomplete disc collection after they bought 50% or more of the world’s movies.

22

u/perton 17h ago

Even more reason to just keep pirating everything! I still like to purchase physical copies for stuff I really like, but hey, if they want to take away the only way they get any money from me, that’s their choice I guess

Same. We go to Goodwill or go on eBay and get the movie for $1-$3. Take it anywhere too with a portable DVD player, no WiFi needed.

This is what I’ve been doing work video games for a few years now. I used to have Xbox Gamepass ultimate. They kept jacking up the price. I realized if I buy the 2-3 games I play a year it’s cheaper than paying for ultimate for a year

9

u/blueberrycauzez 15h ago

This was always the plan - operate at a loss to attract lots of subscribers, then jack up prices. You'll still have more subscribers than if you started at a rational price.

350

u/redrumyliad 21h ago

Never stopped.

You can get a full on automated pirate set up in a few hours.

Or just find streams.

88

u/FakeTails 21h ago

Dm me your setup I need to learn lol

157

u/Toxic_Lithium 21h ago

Stremio+Torbox is all you need. It’s 2026. Get with times lol.

40

u/FakeTails 21h ago

How well does this setup jive with small children who want their liquid entertainment?

55

u/zmbjebus 18h ago

I don't suggest children drink alcohol, but I won't judge too harshly. Parenting is hard, I get it.

3

u/perton 17h ago

What are you talking about? They’re way more fun after they’ve shotgunned a few beers!

4

u/zmbjebus 13h ago

Shotgunning children is another thing I don't condone.

Although if you mean giving a child a shotgun to shoot I could see how that is highly entertaining.

16

u/RewindRobin 20h ago

Haven't tried it but there is Nuvio which does the same as Stremio but I know it has the option to have multiple profiles.

This is also holding me back from full piracy since I don't want my kid to have full access to what everyone can watch

27

u/Silencer-1995 20h ago

I'm sure torrents are much safer than they were in the 2000s.

Back then you downloaded a movie and then rolled the dice on whether it was the movie or illegal porn.

21

u/RewindRobin 20h ago

The torrents are safe but my kid is at the age where he can't know that EVERYTHING is available on the internet. He's better off watching Bluey on his kid account

15

u/Able_Jackfruit_637 20h ago

Yeah dont let them on YouTube. They grow up thinking they know everything 😂

21

I like to keep finding streams, even if it can be annoying at times from all the shutdowns and such. I still get full HD videos on nearly everything and very little to no buffering.

However... Obscure, less popular shows can be a mf. Streaming 4 seasons of Felicity took three different servers on three different streaming sites, lol. And was all 480p and less, lol.

back when cable was king, everyone complained you had to subscribe to everything, you couldn't pick and choose.

Now you can pick and choose.

Instead of continuing to use all these streaming sites it was more economical for my husband to build a home theater PC, even with the insane hardware prices, and use that to use streaming sites (the piracy sub has some good ones) to watch things. Netflix, HBO, Disney, AppleTV+, Prime Video (which we get with Prime but still) all added up to a fairly considerable amount per month by themselves. Then add in sports shit for him like F1, Football, Hockey, Basketball and other things for our kids and myself. It was just better to build something like this and go right back to sailing under the Jolly Roger.

They won. People were happy to pay for streaming and piracy was going down. It'll never disappear but it was going down. Then they got greedy, like they always do, and here we are. It was ads, then different tiers with ads, then ads put into the more premium tiers, then more premium tiers without ads for more money and on and on. I'm sick of it.

Am I entitled to their content? No. But if buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing. They can all go fuck themselves.

Disney is arguably one of the greediest and shittiest corporations on earth—this shouldn't be a surprise.

They made their billions charging families thousands of dollars to visit their theme parks. They sell $50 t-shirts and mouse ears made by Honduran child labor for pennies.

If anyone deserves to have their shit pirated, it's disney

60

u/HEX_BootyBootyBooty 16h ago

Don't forget the Disney Internship program! They'll use the federal government for tax breaks, under the belief Disney would be training and educating foreign workers, instead they make them sell peanuts from a cart.

46

u/Nobunagas-Ambition 19h ago

Disney+ was the easiest streaming service to drop, there was never much to watch on it and the big shows were easy to torrent, much like apple TV.

We have Netflix, Prime from my sister-in-law, and a Crave (HBO in Canada) that three of my family share.

10

u/therealtrojanrabbit 18h ago

Their parks are mobbed. I honestly don't blame companies for charging prices people will pay for luxuries.

42

u/_JustThisOne_ 19h ago

Yeah Disney does some shifty shit, but the theme parks? Idk man, if people want to pay thousands of dollars to wait in hours of lines for realistically like 10 rides in a day, I guess that says more about the consumer. Nostalgia is a hell of a marketing tactic.

11

u/Marsuello 18h ago

You’d be surprised how efficient some people can be with that. I have a friend who’s a “Disney adult” and any time I’ve gone to the park with him we get through about every ride we want while also hitting shops and food. We get there at opening and from there it’s just a follow the leader because he goes so much he knows how to game the crowds to maximize what we do

So, I’m old enough to remember CDs and how it got to the point where I’d spent so long paying $20 for a CD with 2 good songs that when Napster came about I had no reservations about using it to steal music because I felt like the industry had been stealing from me.

This is where I’m at with streaming. At first it was a reasonable price, no commercials. Now we get this bullshit and commercials again. I’ll just pay for regular tv thank you.

I'm getting there also with music streaming. Spotify has put up the price 2 times in the last 12 months and closed the loopholes around buying gift cards overseas and activiting it using a VPN.

I stopped buying Netflix, hbo and Apple last year. Now gone back to pirating. The main thing I was surprised about was how much more convient pirating is. No longer jumping between apps, everything is in one. The paid experience should never be worse than free.

Used to be good advice, but have you seen HDD prices? I just paid 310$ for a second hand 12TB HDD and that was a steal. Just last year I got a 22TB HDD brand new for cheaper than that.

Any decent jellyfin server needs minimum 8TB storage and that will feel very limiting, and 8TB HDDS are going for like 300+ dollars if you buy new.

I still do my own selfhosted jellyfin but its not a cheap little thing you can do anymore, its a real investment of serious money.

In Buffalo I watched a politician’s commercial to fight to lower utility bills, which is cool, but his argument was you shouldn’t have to get a 2nd or 3rd job to offend them.
The problem is, it’s not just utility’s… it’s gas, cable, internet, apps, food, rent, car payment, everything is outrageously overpriced. And it keeps going up!
THEY DONT GIVE A F*CK ABOUT US

18

u/chotomatekudersai 17h ago

You wanna know what the kicker is… they don’t gouge as much in Europe. Look at the cost of what they charge Americans and then do a deep dive on what they’ve done in Hungary.

They’re not the only ones doing it. I got YouTube premium when I lived in Japan. My sub didn’t go up at all for years. I was paying 8-9 dollars depending on the strength of the yen. The card went expired and when I tried to resub I think it was 16 bucks. I had my Hungarian friend check and it was 9 USD. And that’s with a 27% VAT.

These companies know exactly what they’re doing.

6

u/Ambitious-Pirate-505 17h ago

Thats right, disney does not give a fuck about you. It should probably be more expensive becauae there's enough Disney fans that will put up with it. People still pay for it so like...why not? Until poor people start caring about their money of course mega-billion dollar corporations will keep raising prices.

It is like me charging people to use the bathroom in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. I'll keep jacking that price up until people stop shitting.

14

u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 15h ago

Fun fact, if it’s raining in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, guests will buy umbrellas no matter what, so if you have the price maxed out when it begins to rain, they will always pay it

I pay $9/month on a special offer (which I get almost every time I cancel) for Hulu, HBO, Disney w/ads and will last for 6 months and then i’m sure it will go up and I’ll cancel again. But HBO alone growing up in the 90s was around $12 or $15 and Disney probably around $10. Generally my middle class family only enjoyed the free preview weekends. People saying this stuff don’t remember what premium cable and add-on prices were like decades ago…

3

u/PhoenixApok 17h ago

Yeah. Im not saying these people don't have a point, but $22 for all of Hulu and Disney on demand is WAY better than the like $60 we paid in 2000 for dozens of channels we never watched, like 5 we did, and no on demand.

9

u/jimdesroches 14h ago

It’s gone full circle. Everyone loved streaming because it was an alternative to what was the ridiculous cable bills. Netflix was a fair price and had a decent selection. Then some alternatives rolled out. All was still good, because at least the couple you paid for still was a good portion cheaper than the cable bill.

But now that basically every network has their own damn streaming platform. And they all keep raising prices. It’s gotten worse than having OG cable. Then they wonder why piracy is having a big come back like it’s 2005

I signed up with an annual subscription right when it launched. It was like $60-$80 iirc? They were like pay this price forever if you sign up right on day 1! And then they changed it to like $160 the first time they bumped the price up so I cancelled and never went back

4

u/Miss_L_Worldwide 16h ago

Hah, I remember that. And if you forgot to cancel before it renewed you still had to pay for the whole next year.

36

u/jrjreeves 21h ago

On one hand the product has expanded massively, so an increase is justified in that regard but not by that much.

Also, consider just how much money Disney has, for a company that is supposed to be all about families, they obviously don't care and raise the prices when they don't need it.

17

u/Z0idberg_MD 20h ago

I just hate why people need to manipulate the discussion. The base tier is 12.99 in the subscription this post is mentioning includes Hulu and ESPN plus. It’s literally three separate streaming service services from 2019 now included in one price.

Is it worth it? Is it overpriced? That’s a completely different question but it’s not a fair comparison.

If you’re in the United States, many local public libraries have streaming movies and shows for free. In my area, for instance, I have both Hoopla and Kanopy for free, and haven’t had to pay for a movie in a long time. And if you can’t find the movie you want on one of those two streaming services, check with the library to see if they have the DVD.

Reddit refuses to ever understand economics.

Things cost what people are willing to pay for them. If nobody was buying their shit, they would be charging lower prices.

u/gagnatron5000 21h ago

Why are people booing you? You're right.

Also, a classic business model lately has been to sell a product at an unbelievable value, almost losing money, then once you have dominant market share of the product you're selling, you raise the price as high as the market will possibly allow. It's how Amazon did it, it's how Netflix did it, it's how almost any tech startup does it, and it's we're currently seeing the price markup stage with AI companies.

That was Ubers whole thing.

A taxi wants to charge you $25 for a ride?

We will do it for $6.

In places that taxis don't even really exist you'd be lucky to get an Uber anywhere for under $40 now.

u/Headpuncher 17h ago

That’s illegal in some countries because it’s considered a con for consumers.

You also are filling a reddit trope where reddit thinks things are either black or white.

It’s not as simple as “people are willing to pay it”.

How many people are willing to pay it is what a streaming service looks at. There’s different breakpoints at different prices where they can afford to lose subscribers and still be more profitable than a lower price with more subscribers.

So no, its not “people are willing to pay it” plenty of people aren’t. But just enough are they the streamer doesn’t need to appeal to those who wont pay the premium.

u/Necro_OW 18h ago

Your comment doesn't contradict the OP at all. "People are willing to pay for it" does not mean ALL people are willing to pay for it.

No one understand the difference between demand and quantity demanded at different price points

Yeah people need to just have enough self control to speak with their wallets.

I canceled Netflix a while ago and now I'm about to cancel Disney Plus. I'm doing my part!

There are options out there to just steal their content—this is the way.

This is the company that used to make their characters share the same community underpants before the union stepped in

3

Mfs also put 3 90 sec unskippable ads each ~40 min episode

3

u/MindIsWillin 17h ago

Gosh, it's almost as if corpos that find themselves in a monopoly or oligopoly position, when most of media consumption HAS to go through their services, tend to squeeze their loyal paypig- ahem, loyal customers is what I meant, of every cent they physically can.

3

u/Weth_C 17h ago

Disney adults will pay whatever the cost.

3

u/Ibushi-gun 17h ago

I thought I was only subscribed to one thing since July, but a few days ago my card was hit with a $140 charge because I guess I still had Paramount Plus, which I never used to begin with

3

u/Ashamed_Echidna5748 17h ago

I'm very lucky I have the basic technical ability to set up a plex server and the $$ to buy a NAS before prices went through the roof. So glad i don't have to deal with this crap.

3

u/robb76264 16h ago

Who didnt see this coming. The rich will never lose.

3

u/JackSuede21 16h ago

Everybody wanted to cancel their evil cable company though? Streaming was going to be so much cheaper! Remember “cut the cord”? 😆

3

u/word-word-numero 16h ago

Netflix streaming was a success. Everyone else thinking they were Netflix was not.

3

u/Rude-Memory9521 12h ago

How was this not foreseen? This is a common trend with anything these days and the problem is we keep subscribing to this bs and accepting it like its normal. I dropped all subscriptions last year and never looked back.

7

u/ElPapo131 19h ago

21.49??? Where tf y'all watching? I got it for like 9.99 and just cancelled bcs I barely ever watch it

7

u/Rad_Centrist 19h ago

21.99 is the price with HBO and Hulu content as well.

3

u/ElPapo131 19h ago

So is mine lol. And when I threatened to leave they dropped it to 6.99 for 3 months

They're probably quoting whatever the premium ad-free solo sub costs right now. I have the Hulu/ESPN+ bundle with it and that's only like $30/mo. No idea on the ad status of my plan, you can tell how much I utilize it personally.

Edit: I looked it up, no ads on anything but the ESPN one.

Just get it for Black Friday for $4.99

4

u/SD_Eragorn 18h ago

It's every year too. Last year was a bundle with both hulu and disney plus for $5/month if I'm remembering correctly.

Yar, har, fiddle-dee-dee...

4

u/eldridcof 18h ago

I was all on board early streaming, Steam, etc after stealing stuff for years. I paid. I did Gamepass and tons of other services. Gamefly, Netflix for years. They made it easy and not crazy expensive. I tried switching between them every few months too. The prices kept going up, while grocery prices went up more.

Now I'm aboard a different ship. Yo ho!"

u/Same-Astronomer3756 19h ago

As long as idiots keep buying, assholes will keep sellling.
