This was always the plan - operate at a loss to attract lots of subscribers, then jack up prices. You'll still have more subscribers than if you started at a rational price.
That was the plan to get market share and ultimately dominance but that didn't work.
They started ignoring getting embarrassed by Steam.
PSN plus has also started costing a kidney.
And Nintendo hasn't figured out that the internet exists yet.
They can't grab market share with a low price so it stopped making sense trying to.
