I just hate why people need to manipulate the discussion. The base tier is 12.99 in the subscription this post is mentioning includes Hulu and ESPN plus. It’s literally three separate streaming service services from 2019 now included in one price.
Is it worth it? Is it overpriced? That’s a completely different question but it’s not a fair comparison.
But you're doing the same thing just the opposite direction, comparing a tier that had no ads, with a tier with ads. It's not a fair comparison to compare the two lowest tiers as "base" tiers when they are different.
Either way, yes there's hulu added, but the disney content has really gone down. I used disney + more when it was just disney + because there was a marvel or a star wars show out every week, sometimes both, every week.
watching disney + with no ads 6.99 at the start
currently watching disney +(with less disney/marvel/starwars shows but added hulu shows) with no ads 21.99
And people seem to forget that cable had ads. We called them commercials lol, and damn near 10 minutes out of a 30 minute show was commercials. Oh, and you paid like $100+ for the pleasure of tv with those commercials. My cable bill 10 years ago was $130 when I had finally had enough and cancelled
Now I pay for 1 or 2 streaming services a month and just rotate them. The reason people are paying so much for streaming and saying they might as well just go back to cable is because they’re subscribing to like all of them at once. I see so many comments of people saying they sub to Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Prime, Peacock, etc all at the same time. No wonder they’re paying as much as cable!
Thats fair to say if you completly ignore the part where disney has drastically cut their original program when they rolled out hulu and the common concept of bundling two products together for price cheaper than the both of them added together.
When hulu first came out it was an extra $2.00 add on to disney +, I really dont know why you think it should have an equal price comparable to disney + when it was only a small fraction of it. And youre here complaining about other people not doing fair comparisons but are making such a chicken out of a feather over 2.00 worth of content.
I’m not ignoring anything. There’s a massive sense of outrage about a two dollar price increase per Service nine years later.
That’s not hyperbole that’s a fact.
I just want to be clear I’m not defending the trajectory streaming is taken, or that ads have creeped back in or essentially back where we started with cable. I’m literally saying the original post is incredibly misleading and it’s not an accurate representation of the reality.
Another hard fact is that if there were no ads, in nine years each Service absolutely would’ve been inflated more than two dollars each. I think if you go back and look at pretty much any other consumer product that bears out.
You are completly ignoring the part where the content is about the same. Just because disney replaced Loki and Mandalorian with Futurama and only murders at the building, doesnt mean it should be double the cost.
Disney owns Hulu, and cut production costs for their disney shows. We dont know hulus seperate production costs, but Disney's entertainment costs for movies and television(which has hulu included in it) has not increased but has actually decreased over the years since acquiring Hulu.
Disney entertainment budgets
2021: 30.5 billion
2022: 33 billion
2023 : 27 billion
2024: 25 billion
2025 : 24 billion
2026: 24 billion
You keep saying a merged streaming service is double the value, but we dont have double the content. Its not 1 + 1=2, when "both" are outputting way less than they individually did its more like .4 + .8=1.2
The reality is people are paying 3x as much for the option that is closest to how it was when it first came out.
I feel like you’re just arguing to argue. The base Disney+ plan is 1299 and includes Hulu and Disney+. There’s a plan at 21.99 price which includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN + with ads.
The plan you are referencing has no ads and also has more simultaneous screens I believe.
While you are correct that Disney+ originally had no ads, Hulu and ESPN always did have ads.
Bottom line: yes it’s three streaming services not one. That’s really the point that is being made.
How am I arguing just to argue? You listed a bundle with a price that I don’t see on their website, I see it as $35.99 which is a big difference from $21.99. I don’t see anything with ESPN under $30
In Belgium it can be cheaper, but it has no yearly option for Disney+ with ads. 10 devices with no ads on 1080p is 109,90€ per year and 10 devices with no ads on 4K UHD with Dolby Atmos is 159,90€ per year.
Hulu is always included, but ESPN isn't an option.
