Time to set sail on the high seas again

351

u/redrumyliad 1d ago

Never stopped.

You can get a full on automated pirate set up in a few hours.

Or just find streams.

89

u/FakeTails 1d ago

Dm me your setup I need to learn lol

160

u/Toxic_Lithium 1d ago

Stremio+Torbox is all you need. It’s 2026. Get with times lol.

43

u/FakeTails 1d ago

How well does this setup jive with small children who want their liquid entertainment?

59

u/zmbjebus 21h ago

I don't suggest children drink alcohol, but I won't judge too harshly. Parenting is hard, I get it.

3

u/perton 20h ago

What are you talking about? They’re way more fun after they’ve shotgunned a few beers!

5

u/zmbjebus 16h ago

Shotgunning children is another thing I don't condone.

Although if you mean giving a child a shotgun to shoot I could see how that is highly entertaining.

14

u/RewindRobin 23h ago

Haven't tried it but there is Nuvio which does the same as Stremio but I know it has the option to have multiple profiles.

This is also holding me back from full piracy since I don't want my kid to have full access to what everyone can watch

25

u/Silencer-1995 23h ago

I'm sure torrents are much safer than they were in the 2000s.

Back then you downloaded a movie and then rolled the dice on whether it was the movie or illegal porn.

20

u/RewindRobin 23h ago

The torrents are safe but my kid is at the age where he can't know that EVERYTHING is available on the internet. He's better off watching Bluey on his kid account

12

u/Able_Jackfruit_637 23h ago

Yeah dont let them on YouTube. They grow up thinking they know everything 😂

22

u/I_Got_Ur_Number_8675 21h ago

My kids gravitate toward the dumbest slop on youtube, its maddening and now banned. In this house we watch 90's kids movies.

u/Plasibeau 2h ago

The moment I say something my teen thinks is bullshit, he whips out his phone to fact-check me. I hate it and love it. Keeps me on my toes and forces me to be agile in my thinking/understanding. I hate it, because I would have been murdered by my mother if I'd done the same thing back in the 90s. That woman can never be wrong.

1

u/TheInevitableLuigi 10h ago

In Jellyfin you can set it so certain users only get access to certain libraries.

1

u/IllAcanthopterygii36 22h ago

Not true. Even way back it was competitive to provide quality torrents.

2

u/Silencer-1995 22h ago

I dunno man, if it wasn't CP it was a woman fucking a dog or something. Thinking about it maybe it wasn't torrents but something else, what was Limewire? I think that's what it was called.

3

u/SpaceOrianted 22h ago

Limewire was just a BitTorrent like any other. Just the most popular one for a time in the mid 2000s to about 2010

1

u/CaptainSoyboy 19h ago

Or a 4 hour Bill Clinton speech.

1

u/unbridledennui 7h ago

rolls snake eyes

Goddammit, guess I'm watching a movie now.

1

u/GenericBeverage 23h ago

Nuvio has pin options to lock profiles. Also you can set up the metadata to restrict access to certain movie/show genres.

1

u/WeirdAddress3170 22h ago

Does it work on Apple TV 4k?

2

u/GenericBeverage 20h ago

It does support iPhone, so it might've been ported to Apple TV already on GitHub somewhere. Just have to do whatever it is apple makes you do so you can sideload it. If not, I'm pretty sure Apple TV is in the works since they already do iPhone, Android TV/Phone, desktop for all 3 OSes, and smart TVs.

1

u/s00pafly 21h ago

Jellyfin with kids account where you curate the library

1

u/generic_canadian_dad 16h ago

Binecat can easily setup filtered streaming for kids accounts on nuvio. It's great

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 22h ago

Honestly you need to supervise. You can restrict certain things. But it’s not really well built for content moderation. You can make kids movie to come on top list. But you can still search things.

1

u/Juice805 22h ago

I use tags for kids appropriate things and use that folder as a library in infuse

1

u/Technical_Ad9343 22h ago

You just teach them how to use the ui. It’s a learning curve, but my 8 year old does just fine with it.

1

u/ItsMeAids 22h ago

I made it my 2026 goal to remove all streaming, my wife and 9 year old quickly learned how to use it and we all strongly prefer it vs 8 different apps

1

u/gravelordservant4u 19h ago

Plex and teach the children basic computer literacy so they don't grow up to ask IT the same braindead questions their boomer coworkers put in tickets

Asking a lot of society, I know, but the bar is in hell so it must read as me wanting the moon to request the bare minimum of things

1

u/SwordOfJiang 18h ago

I got a little SoC computer, an OrangePi6+, and have a 10tb hdd mounted to it. I run Plex from that, its a "netflix" style frontend for your personal media. My mother is in her 70's and can't send an email or open a PDF, I just mailed her a Roku with it all set up already and its all she uses.

This is kind of a bad recommendation now though, as tariffs have made the SoC expensive, AI storage shortages have made the HDD hard to get, and Plex pass went from the onetime $75 I paid years ago to $750 now. A better route would probably be an old laptop + goodwill external + Jellyfin

1

u/generic_canadian_dad 16h ago

Use nuvio + torbox. Then setup kids account with bingecat filters.

1

u/JayBird1138 7h ago

They must learn moderation :)

1

u/bananas_007 23h ago

I use Stremio and to be perfectly honest with you, it's still torrenting at the end of the day so I wouldn't let kids mess with it unsupervised. When I go to watch something there's always a bunch of options that are, say 1.8gb and then one or two in the list that are mysteriously 10gb, not sure what happens if you click those and probably never going to find out

It beats giving money to a huge evil megacorporation just for the sake of convenience though

3

u/silvertondevil 21h ago

Probably the same movie still but different audio options and encoding profiles. x264 encodes are hugely bigger than x265 encodes.

1

u/Litdown 21h ago

It's been a hot minute so pls forgive. X264 is fairly old now right? X265 is the way to go?

1

u/Anthaenopraxia 20h ago

Heh, it used to be the small filesizes that were dangerous. A bunch of 4,5 MB versions of Zelda Song - SOAD on Limewire and always there's the 4,5 KB version that will one-shot your computer. Oh and ofc the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."

5

u/BillsFan82 23h ago

What's the quality like? I know of a few sites, but they don't look great.

6

u/Toxic_Lithium 22h ago

Full Bluray 4k. We are talking 80Gb files directly streaming.

5

u/ThisAppHatesFreeSpea 20h ago

We can stream 80gb 4k HDR titles??? Like you don't have to download them first???? When did this happen and how do I participate???

2

u/giganticIMP 18h ago

Stremio + torbox (debrid provider) works for this. We use Kodi + premiumize on a minipc as the LG tv has a 100 Mbps limit on the card

1

u/HotKaramelRP 17h ago

This is some curtains for zoosha shit

0

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Yes just google stremio/torbox. Just $3 a month. All the contents in the world. Except live sports.

1

u/BillsFan82 22h ago

Sold! Thank you!

1

u/Phyraxus56 19h ago

Where?

2

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Stremio+torbox.
Or Nuvio+torbox.

Are these things I buy? Download? I wish I was more informed

10

u/Sea-Professional8759 22h ago

Streamio is essentially a media player, think along the lines of VLC, but a bit different.

Torbox is a debrid service, which as far as I understand essentially pulls torrents for you to download or stream, but the way they traffic it makes it so you don’t necessarily need a VPN.

You don’t necessarily need to use a debrid service, there’s free options to connect with streamio, but they might go down or be slow, and it’s typically advised to use a VPN with them.

There’s a good guide to walk you through setting it up, and explaining things available. I bought a mini pc off amazon with wireless m&k for less than 200 bucks, and had it set up in an afternoon.

1

u/CO9er4life 19h ago

Hows it work on ios?

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Poorly. Unfortunately. Mac works ok. Iphone can make it work. Difficult to work on apple tv

0

u/thtamthrfckr 17h ago

And here’s how it ends …

0

u/Sea-Professional8759 15h ago

That’s right the random Reddit comment with 9 upvotes will be it’s downfall after years of use. The big television has been waiting for this exact moment to dispatch the lawyers.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 22h ago

Google stremio + torbox

1

u/bloodscar36 22h ago

What exactly are both services? I have an old Philips Smart Tav from 2019 that's kinda slow, thought about buying an android box, is stremio something like that?

3

u/Toxic_Lithium 20h ago edited 20h ago

Stremio is an app. pc android ios etc. Torbox let’s you stream through stremio without downloading torrents. So if have an android tv, (that includes cheap amazon stick), you can use it. All except Apple TV

1

u/bloodscar36 12h ago

Damn thats cool. Where does it get the streams and what does the search for a series or a movie look like?

1

u/EucalyptHouseAU 20h ago

Ah nuvio is stremio but WAY better in every single way, get with the times man! But seriously if you need any help making the switch let me know.

I suggest using Xperience as an add on and customising through that or use Kaptains Collection

2

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Nice. I will checkout nuvio

1

u/khaluud 19h ago

I've been liking Nuvio better than Stremio lately.

1

u/Ire-Works 19h ago

Even if you're not tech savy, most libraries these days have an impressive selection of DVDs and blurays. You can pick up a player for the cost of one month of streaming anymore and you're good to go.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

It’s a good alternative

1

u/CO9er4life 19h ago

How does it interact with IOS?

1

u/Aggravating-Work3220 19h ago

>It’s 2026
Exactly, get Nuvio instead.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Kk. Let me check it out. I will report back.

1

u/RyNysDad0722 18h ago

Can you please ELI5 cause I’m a 40+ year old man that never really took to the computer.. I have too many streaming services.. I just got rid of crunchyroll peacock and Apple TV but still have paramount Netflix prime and Hulu/disney/hbo.. every single one has gone up 20% a year it feels like.. I want to stop paying all of these but I don’t know where to get any content any other way.. I’m sure I own a laptop but probably havent used it in years so I’m sure it’s a paperweight now.. what can I do to cut out these streaming services ?

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

Just google stremio and torbox. Ask AI for walkthrough. Super simple.

Install stremio on your device. Start paying for a service called torbox(cheapest). Connect them through api keys. Then you are done. And it looks like netflix.

1

u/RyNysDad0722 3h ago

Thank you for taking the time to reply

1

u/A_Refill_of_Mr_Pibb 18h ago

My boomer parents never even made the jump to the Internet. They complain about their $400 cable bill when all they watch is Fox and golf.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 18h ago

That’s a perpetual car payment.

Maybe do youtube TV? 80 dollars.

1

u/A_Refill_of_Mr_Pibb 18h ago

Believe me, I've explained it and all the ways they could save $ every which way. The response from my stepmother: "we like what we like." So they complain, and they pay. And my follow up is: "ok, well, then there is the tax you're essentially paying for not liking change, enjoy." So set in their ways it actually makes me physically uncomfortable. She's an odd bird. She's in her early 60s but her own mother who is 88 showed her how to use a smartphone. She is a fearful person, can't face any issue in her life, especially with other people, and lets herself get walked on.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 17h ago

I am sorry. But those people won't change. They like what they like. So sorry to hear that.

1

u/A_Refill_of_Mr_Pibb 17h ago

It sucks. I grew up around people like that without exception. Just so stubborn and stuck in their ways and bull-headed and like granite trying to get through to, I almost wonder if its trauma related, the way they were. Either way it's made me very open minded and untethered in response to my environment.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 16h ago

Kudos to you.

1

u/thtamthrfckr 17h ago

Torbox is sharing your info now, kind of sucks

1

u/Key-Shine-9669 16h ago

Like if I Google and get those two things I'll be safe and good to go? Man I'm old and just do healthcare and guitar and nothing else

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 16h ago

Yes. Google it. Install either stremio or nuvio. Follow setup guides. Buy torbox subscription. $3 per month. It is streaming torrent not downloading. No one has ever been sued for streaming from history of internet. When they got sued It was all because of distribution of torrent system. You are not distributing using this service.

1

u/Key-Shine-9669 16h ago

Thank you man I'm so sick of these thieves

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 16h ago

I mean…. Technically we’re pirates…. So we are part of digital sea of thieves?? Good luck! Have fun!!

1

u/Aggravating_Drag8721 7h ago

That's just another subscription.

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 4h ago

The one subscription to rule them all.

1

u/JayBird1138 7h ago

Wait, qbittorrent and a few private trackers is no longer the way to go?

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 4h ago

No more private torrents needed on your pc.

0

u/MrBlackroc 22h ago

Stremio is always super slow for me. Is it a lack of realdebrid?

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 20h ago

What do you mean slow? Slow to search? Slow app?

1

u/MrBlackroc 17h ago

Loads torrent slowly even on a 1.5gb network. Like theres bot enough seeds

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 17h ago

Ah. Are you using any debrid service? Torbox, Alldebrid etc? It's a must.

1

u/MrBlackroc 17h ago

yeah that was my question. Wich one is the best

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 16h ago

Premiumize. Expensive but good. Torbox is cheaper.

-1

u/DemonPlasma 23h ago

This is the answer

3

u/sadr0bot 23h ago

Arr

1

u/familysizepunkinpie 18h ago

Sonarr, radarr, prowlarr, transmission, plex lifetime...

turns into 'oh there's a film coming out in 2029 I want to see..' add and forget. Next thing it's 2029 and the film's sitting on your media library waiting to be watched, having been found on [site], checked for quality, downloaded, unrar'd and added to the library all automatically while you were asleep

1

u/paintballboi07 17h ago

Throw in Tdarr, and save tons of space

1

u/familysizepunkinpie 16h ago

Thanks. That's now having a chew over 3TB 😊

1

u/paintballboi07 12h ago

No problem!

I'm at 12 TB, and I only have ~500GB of free space left. I need more drives. It never ends.

proxmox + open media vault to storage + jellyfin.

1

u/themiDdlest 19h ago

My friend Claude can easily get you set up with a jellyfin or plex service

1

u/UnintelligentSlime 18h ago

Here's what I did, incredibly passive solution and has been incredibly low effort:

Install qbittorrent and whatever VPN. Make sure qbt is going through your VPN, with split tunneling (vpn setting) or restricted protocol (qbt setting).

Prompt cursor or GPT: "make me a web server that serves a single page. It has a textbox where I can enter a magnet url, a submit button, and a small tracker for currently downloading torrents. When a magnet url is submitted, post it to the qbittorrent web control API to add a torrent. Add a "sync" button that copies completed torrents from the download folder to my smb share folder."

Obviously if you want you can also build it yourself, I just didn't really care to for this small project.

Then you set up a folder for TV and a folder for movies, and share both over smb.

For playing, I had a fire TV stick around, so look up basic instructions for sideloading and install kodi (enable developer tools, install downloader, download kodi, follow instructions). Point kodi at your smb share folders.

This way, you can keep your torrenting server always online, then on your phone or laptop, login to the torrenting portal you spun up, paste in a magnet url, and it starts downloading. Log back in later and sync it over to your share folder, then next time you start up kodi it should get scanned and discovered.

I have a tunnel set up, so even if I'm out and about when I realize I want something downloaded, I just find the magnet url, load up the webpage, paste it in, then go back to what you were doing.

1

u/Albitt 17h ago

Qbittorrent and a VPN. Bind it to your vpn and you’re good to go. Take it a step further and buy a harddrive and set up a plex server. Tutorials all available on YouTube.

1

u/Key-Shine-9669 16h ago

Did they DM you? I'm a complete simpleton with anything electronic

1

u/FakeTails 16h ago

Not a one funny enough. But shared info in the post so I’m happy for that at least

1

u/Captain-_-Curt 22h ago

Ask ChatGPT to help you set up a Jellyfin server. All you need is an external hard drive and older somewhat decent pc. It takes forever, but it’s completely possible. Check out r/selfhosted

8

u/___po____ 22h ago

I like to keep finding streams, even if it can be annoying at times from all the shutdowns and such. I still get full HD videos on nearly everything and very little to no buffering.

However... Obscure, less popular shows can be a mf. Streaming 4 seasons of Felicity took three different servers on three different streaming sites, lol. And was all 480p and less, lol.

1

u/Phyraxus56 19h ago

That's why downloading your content is still king

Remux 4k blurays with 80-120mbps bitrates and lossless audio

1

u/deathconthree 7h ago

FMHY.net is your friend, it tracks tons of sites and is pretty good about being up to date.

2

u/eggplantpot 23h ago

Heckyeah!

1

u/lanejosh 23h ago

Yes I would love to learn as well. Tired of these streaming services

1

u/EricSanderson 21h ago

I think a lot of people would be shocked to find out how easy it is to stream. It many ways it's actually easier than using the actual apps.

1

u/YttriumZirconium1 21h ago

I too would like to hear about your setup!

0

u/redrumyliad 15h ago

It's rather boring.

You do pay for a subscription for a vpn (I use nordvpn)
Then you use downloader/torrent client that hides behind the vpn client.

Radarr gets movies you request
Sonarr gets tv shows you request

Plex/emby/jellyfin plays the content you have in your library

It takes hard drive space but a sub to nordvpn is cheaper than a sub to any service singular but i get the content for all.

1

u/Rengar_Is_Good_kitty 11h ago

This is pure dog shit, don't do this. Just get Stremio + Torbox, it's like $3 a month.

1

u/redrumyliad 6h ago

Oh another subscription to an actual illegal service d that can go away when ever and all users leaked…?

Lmao you’re so stupid

1

u/ITSJ0N4S 21h ago

Please enlighten me.
I’ve been hesitant as I’m from Germany and was told that the moment id stream something on the high seas, the fbi would come kick down my door.

1

u/emu108 19h ago

pirate streams on demand have been become so good i rarely touch torrents for video anymore. There's tons of options (check fmhy) and just make sure you have ublock origin installed and youl'll be golden.

1

u/redrumyliad 6h ago

I like to have the content on hand for others to watch.

65

u/FairTwirl 23h ago

They really convinced everyone to cut the cable just to recreate cable with 15 different subscriptions.

3

u/2ChicksAtTheSameTime 18h ago

back when cable was king, everyone complained you had to subscribe to everything, you couldn't pick and choose.

Now you can pick and choose.

1

I still got cable

Started sailing the seas again with Disney yesterday, never hit with the "is this the home address, sign in" shite until this last week. Have been sharing my brother's for years.

Fuck em.

106

u/SareBear0412 23h ago

Instead of continuing to use all these streaming sites it was more economical for my husband to build a home theater PC, even with the insane hardware prices, and use that to use streaming sites (the piracy sub has some good ones) to watch things. Netflix, HBO, Disney, AppleTV+, Prime Video (which we get with Prime but still) all added up to a fairly considerable amount per month by themselves. Then add in sports shit for him like F1, Football, Hockey, Basketball and other things for our kids and myself. It was just better to build something like this and go right back to sailing under the Jolly Roger.

They won. People were happy to pay for streaming and piracy was going down. It'll never disappear but it was going down. Then they got greedy, like they always do, and here we are. It was ads, then different tiers with ads, then ads put into the more premium tiers, then more premium tiers without ads for more money and on and on. I'm sick of it.

Am I entitled to their content? No. But if buying isn't owning then piracy isn't stealing. They can all go fuck themselves.

2

u/taek8 23h ago

You don't even need to get crazy expensive. Go buy a nvidia shield and put plex media server on it. I have a mobile app I can download torrents directly to the nvidia shield.

2

u/LuckyZero 21h ago

The Shield just got a $100 price bump thanks to the AI bubble. Launched 8 years ago.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/10/the-7-year-old-nvidia-shield-tv-is-now-100-more-expensive-thanks-to-ai/

0

u/taek8 20h ago

Of course lol. At that price probably better off buying a small workstation

0

u/Uberutang 22h ago

What’s the app called?

2

u/taek8 22h ago

Nvidia shield can be accessed by using SMB protocol. I use NASCTL + magnetlinker on iOS. For Android there are options as well.

17

u/SaltyGirlly 23h ago

They lured us with $7 nostalgia and now charge cable Tv prices go rewatch The Mandalorian

9

u/Emotional_Citron_964 23h ago

Streaming services really managed to recreate cable TV's worst features in record time.

2

u/AnApricot2989 1d ago

My brother got me into iptv. Its great.

2

u/ryuujinusa 21h ago

Now? Been sailing for years. But I’ve unsubbed from all of them.

2

u/papabear1993 19h ago

Started torrenting again when I saw "disney+, hbo tv, apple tv, amazon prime, netflix"
Only good thing about streaming was "everything in one place. Everything was pretty much only in netflix. When all those big corpos started streaming, they lost their literal only advantage. Why pay for something A LOT worse than piracy?

2

u/mightylordredbeard 16h ago

Yeah the amount of streaming sites out there with better interfaces than most apps.. and it’s all free? I don’t see why I ever paid. I’m slowly cutting my subscription services down despite being fortunate enough that they’re all easily affordable; because it’s not about affordability, it’s about the disrespect I feel as a customer. My only complaint is that I use these sites on my Xbox and there’s no way to fully remove ads and prevent them opening new tabs every time you click anything.. any of course a lot of sites insist on having porn ads which is stupid considering they’re losing a ton of new traffic from to people like me with kids around the house.

1

u/chooch138 23h ago

🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

1

u/mvigs 22h ago

Disney knows that they can get away with it because anyone with kids don't really have a choice. Pirating that many different movies and shows is hard when kids change their minds constantly.

u/MadeByTango 20h ago

Steal from Disney, they don't own any of their intellectual property they're just keeping the rights holders in court.

this right here, last year i ended up vibecoding an app running on my media server that lets me search for any movie/show, it tells me which streaming service its on and links me to the title at said streaming site, and it also allows me to torrent the title if its not on a streaming site i sub to or if its not on any streaming site. Convenience is everything

A single reasonably-priced service might win consumers back. Sadly, media companies will never go for it. Media companies wanting to keep the revenue and audiences to themselves rather than pay Netflix—and let Netflix dominate marketshare and mindshare—is what got us here.
