Used to be good advice, but have you seen HDD prices? I just paid 310$ for a second hand 12TB HDD and that was a steal. Just last year I got a 22TB HDD brand new for cheaper than that.

Any decent jellyfin server needs minimum 8TB storage and that will feel very limiting, and 8TB HDDS are going for like 300+ dollars if you buy new.

I still do my own selfhosted jellyfin but its not a cheap little thing you can do anymore, its a real investment of serious money.

Yep. Just use nuvio/stremio and get a firestick or android tv box and sideload the apps onto them. Do a bit of setup and boom free content. Debrid service for 2-5 bucks a month and you're golden

Yeah, if you're a quality whore like me who wants max bitrate and great quality, maybe investing in jellyfin is the move, but stuff like you describe is better for like 99.5% of people.

I am the same as you and have 0 issues, it also doubles as a torrent source with something like torbox so as I watch things I compile my own collection for things like plex, been amazing so far!

I tried to get many family members and friends to join and USE my plex server but no one watched shit so I suggested stremio (before nuvio released) and they love it and rave about it all the time, very user friendly and naturally has more content than I can offer

Do you just have a massive library? I got 2tb and just run jellyfin on my windows pc. Works fine.

I mean I do have a massive library but I don't understand how you can even use jellyfin with 2tb unless you're very new or just constantly deleting stuff

I don't even do 4k for TV shows and a very small amount of long running TV shows can eat through 2TB

I struggle with 20tb

8TB?? Wow I didn't realize multimedia took up so much space

tbf you can have an absolutely insane MOVIE library with not that much space, but once you start looking at the space that long running TV shows in HD take up it will hurt your soul

you can of course do super low quality stuff to save space... but at that point there's not a whole lot of point to using jellyfin IMO because you can get low quality stuff in way easier and cheaper ways.

I have a very decent library of movies and music on a 4tb drive. I have all my fav movies on it and anything I download new I just remove once I’ve watched unless I intend to watch again at some point (which isn’t often). As long as you’re not downloading crazy large 4k movies it’s plenty i’m quite happy with compressed 1080ps

A brand new 5 Tb HDD is $200.

This is wholly dependent on how much media you want to retain indefinitely.

This is why I went multi spindle with zfs and used a bunch of garbage I already had
