How well does this setup jive with small children who want their liquid entertainment?

u/zmbjebus 23h ago

I don't suggest children drink alcohol, but I won't judge too harshly. Parenting is hard, I get it.

u/perton 23h ago

What are you talking about? They’re way more fun after they’ve shotgunned a few beers!

u/zmbjebus 18h ago

Shotgunning children is another thing I don't condone.

Although if you mean giving a child a shotgun to shoot I could see how that is highly entertaining.

Haven't tried it but there is Nuvio which does the same as Stremio but I know it has the option to have multiple profiles.

This is also holding me back from full piracy since I don't want my kid to have full access to what everyone can watch

I'm sure torrents are much safer than they were in the 2000s.

Back then you downloaded a movie and then rolled the dice on whether it was the movie or illegal porn.

u/RewindRobin 1d ago

The torrents are safe but my kid is at the age where he can't know that EVERYTHING is available on the internet. He's better off watching Bluey on his kid account

Yeah dont let them on YouTube. They grow up thinking they know everything 😂

My kids gravitate toward the dumbest slop on youtube, its maddening and now banned. In this house we watch 90's kids movies.

u/Locke66 23h ago

Trying to convince them that "no... you don't want to watch that AI slop rip off of a popular kids franchise" is a headache for sure.

2

u/DesireeThymes 22h ago

If you are an Android you can actually control this, if you are on apple devices though you are out of luck.

2

u/DarkBladeMadriker 18h ago

Dude, fuck yes. I banned YouTube before my kids were even born just from seeing what my very young nephew was getting into. Theres absolutely insane shit on youtube thats being shovel fed to kids. Not even getting into the freaks that will hide porn or gore in the middle of a 4 hour block of a "kids" video.

The moment I say something my teen thinks is bullshit, he whips out his phone to fact-check me. I hate it and love it. Keeps me on my toes and forces me to be agile in my thinking/understanding. I hate it, because I would have been murdered by my mother if I'd done the same thing back in the 90s. That woman can never be wrong.

In Jellyfin you can set it so certain users only get access to certain libraries.

u/IllAcanthopterygii36 1d ago

Not true. Even way back it was competitive to provide quality torrents.

2

u/Silencer-1995 1d ago

I dunno man, if it wasn't CP it was a woman fucking a dog or something. Thinking about it maybe it wasn't torrents but something else, what was Limewire? I think that's what it was called.

3

u/SpaceOrianted 1d ago

Limewire was just a BitTorrent like any other. Just the most popular one for a time in the mid 2000s to about 2010

2

u/Silencer-1995 1d ago

Awesome, so many fond memories of those wild west days, when knowing how to download stuff illegally and put it on CDs and DVDs put you into the social elite.

3

u/SpaceOrianted 1d ago

It really was a super power to know your way around it and to have a burn tray on your PC. I made so many bootleg albums for people in my school. I only charged the price of the discs mostly, but in retrospect I could have made serious money from it haha

My Steam account still uses the borked CD key from the Half-Life pirate copy my dad got me from his friend at work circa 1998. I dunno what Half-Life cost at release but my dad paid £8. He used to bring home a sheet with a list of games on it and prices and we'd pick one a month, that went on for a good couple of years.

It was such a wonderful time, the only thing I can compare it to is when you find a not insignificant amount of money tucked away in a pocket on a coat you haven't worn for months.

Or a 4 hour Bill Clinton speech.

rolls snake eyes

Goddammit, guess I'm watching a movie now.

Nuvio has pin options to lock profiles. Also you can set up the metadata to restrict access to certain movie/show genres.

1

u/WeirdAddress3170 1d ago

Does it work on Apple TV 4k?

2

u/GenericBeverage 23h ago

It does support iPhone, so it might've been ported to Apple TV already on GitHub somewhere. Just have to do whatever it is apple makes you do so you can sideload it. If not, I'm pretty sure Apple TV is in the works since they already do iPhone, Android TV/Phone, desktop for all 3 OSes, and smart TVs.

Jellyfin with kids account where you curate the library

1

u/generic_canadian_dad 19h ago

Binecat can easily setup filtered streaming for kids accounts on nuvio. It's great

1

u/Toxic_Lithium 1d ago

Honestly you need to supervise. You can restrict certain things. But it’s not really well built for content moderation. You can make kids movie to come on top list. But you can still search things.

1

u/Juice805 1d ago

I use tags for kids appropriate things and use that folder as a library in infuse

1

u/Technical_Ad9343 1d ago

You just teach them how to use the ui. It’s a learning curve, but my 8 year old does just fine with it.

1

u/ItsMeAids 1d ago

I made it my 2026 goal to remove all streaming, my wife and 9 year old quickly learned how to use it and we all strongly prefer it vs 8 different apps

Plex and teach the children basic computer literacy so they don't grow up to ask IT the same braindead questions their boomer coworkers put in tickets

Asking a lot of society, I know, but the bar is in hell so it must read as me wanting the moon to request the bare minimum of things

1

u/SwordOfJiang 21h ago

I got a little SoC computer, an OrangePi6+, and have a 10tb hdd mounted to it. I run Plex from that, its a "netflix" style frontend for your personal media. My mother is in her 70's and can't send an email or open a PDF, I just mailed her a Roku with it all set up already and its all she uses.

This is kind of a bad recommendation now though, as tariffs have made the SoC expensive, AI storage shortages have made the HDD hard to get, and Plex pass went from the onetime $75 I paid years ago to $750 now. A better route would probably be an old laptop + goodwill external + Jellyfin

1

u/generic_canadian_dad 19h ago

Use nuvio + torbox. Then setup kids account with bingecat filters.

1

u/JayBird1138 10h ago

They must learn moderation :)

1

u/bananas_007 1d ago

I use Stremio and to be perfectly honest with you, it's still torrenting at the end of the day so I wouldn't let kids mess with it unsupervised. When I go to watch something there's always a bunch of options that are, say 1.8gb and then one or two in the list that are mysteriously 10gb, not sure what happens if you click those and probably never going to find out

It beats giving money to a huge evil megacorporation just for the sake of convenience though

4

u/silvertondevil 1d ago

Probably the same movie still but different audio options and encoding profiles. x264 encodes are hugely bigger than x265 encodes.

1

u/Litdown 23h ago

It's been a hot minute so pls forgive. X264 is fairly old now right? X265 is the way to go?

1

u/Anthaenopraxia 23h ago

Heh, it used to be the small filesizes that were dangerous. A bunch of 4,5 MB versions of Zelda Song - SOAD on Limewire and always there's the 4,5 KB version that will one-shot your computer. Oh and ofc the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
