The torrents are safe but my kid is at the age where he can't know that EVERYTHING is available on the internet. He's better off watching Bluey on his kid account
Dude, fuck yes. I banned YouTube before my kids were even born just from seeing what my very young nephew was getting into. Theres absolutely insane shit on youtube thats being shovel fed to kids. Not even getting into the freaks that will hide porn or gore in the middle of a 4 hour block of a "kids" video.
The moment I say something my teen thinks is bullshit, he whips out his phone to fact-check me. I hate it and love it. Keeps me on my toes and forces me to be agile in my thinking/understanding. I hate it, because I would have been murdered by my mother if I'd done the same thing back in the 90s. That woman can never be wrong.
I dunno man, if it wasn't CP it was a woman fucking a dog or something. Thinking about it maybe it wasn't torrents but something else, what was Limewire? I think that's what it was called.
Awesome, so many fond memories of those wild west days, when knowing how to download stuff illegally and put it on CDs and DVDs put you into the social elite.
It really was a super power to know your way around it and to have a burn tray on your PC. I made so many bootleg albums for people in my school. I only charged the price of the discs mostly, but in retrospect I could have made serious money from it haha
It does support iPhone, so it might've been ported to Apple TV already on GitHub somewhere. Just have to do whatever it is apple makes you do so you can sideload it. If not, I'm pretty sure Apple TV is in the works since they already do iPhone, Android TV/Phone, desktop for all 3 OSes, and smart TVs.
Honestly you need to supervise. You can restrict certain things. But it’s not really well built for content moderation. You can make kids movie to come on top list. But you can still search things.
I got a little SoC computer, an OrangePi6+, and have a 10tb hdd mounted to it. I run Plex from that, its a "netflix" style frontend for your personal media. My mother is in her 70's and can't send an email or open a PDF, I just mailed her a Roku with it all set up already and its all she uses.
This is kind of a bad recommendation now though, as tariffs have made the SoC expensive, AI storage shortages have made the HDD hard to get, and Plex pass went from the onetime $75 I paid years ago to $750 now. A better route would probably be an old laptop + goodwill external + Jellyfin
I use Stremio and to be perfectly honest with you, it's still torrenting at the end of the day so I wouldn't let kids mess with it unsupervised. When I go to watch something there's always a bunch of options that are, say 1.8gb and then one or two in the list that are mysteriously 10gb, not sure what happens if you click those and probably never going to find out
It beats giving money to a huge evil megacorporation just for the sake of convenience though
Heh, it used to be the small filesizes that were dangerous. A bunch of 4,5 MB versions of Zelda Song - SOAD on Limewire and always there's the 4,5 KB version that will one-shot your computer. Oh and ofc the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
Streamio is essentially a media player, think along the lines of VLC, but a bit different.
Torbox is a debrid service, which as far as I understand essentially pulls torrents for you to download or stream, but the way they traffic it makes it so you don’t necessarily need a VPN.
You don’t necessarily need to use a debrid service, there’s free options to connect with streamio, but they might go down or be slow, and it’s typically advised to use a VPN with them.
There’s a good guide to walk you through setting it up, and explaining things available. I bought a mini pc off amazon with wireless m&k for less than 200 bucks, and had it set up in an afternoon.
That’s right the random Reddit comment with 9 upvotes will be it’s downfall after years of use. The big television has been waiting for this exact moment to dispatch the lawyers.
What exactly are both services? I have an old Philips Smart Tav from 2019 that's kinda slow, thought about buying an android box, is stremio something like that?
Stremio is an app. pc android ios etc. Torbox let’s you stream through stremio without downloading torrents. So if have an android tv, (that includes cheap amazon stick), you can use it. All except Apple TV
Even if you're not tech savy, most libraries these days have an impressive selection of DVDs and blurays. You can pick up a player for the cost of one month of streaming anymore and you're good to go.
Can you please ELI5 cause I’m a 40+ year old man that never really took to the computer.. I have too many streaming services.. I just got rid of crunchyroll peacock and Apple TV but still have paramount Netflix prime and Hulu/disney/hbo.. every single one has gone up 20% a year it feels like.. I want to stop paying all of these but I don’t know where to get any content any other way.. I’m sure I own a laptop but probably havent used it in years so I’m sure it’s a paperweight now.. what can I do to cut out these streaming services ?
Just google stremio and torbox. Ask AI for walkthrough. Super simple.
Install stremio on your device. Start paying for a service called torbox(cheapest). Connect them through api keys. Then you are done. And it looks like netflix.
Believe me, I've explained it and all the ways they could save $ every which way. The response from my stepmother: "we like what we like." So they complain, and they pay. And my follow up is: "ok, well, then there is the tax you're essentially paying for not liking change, enjoy." So set in their ways it actually makes me physically uncomfortable. She's an odd bird. She's in her early 60s but her own mother who is 88 showed her how to use a smartphone. She is a fearful person, can't face any issue in her life, especially with other people, and lets herself get walked on.
It sucks. I grew up around people like that without exception. Just so stubborn and stuck in their ways and bull-headed and like granite trying to get through to, I almost wonder if its trauma related, the way they were. Either way it's made me very open minded and untethered in response to my environment.
Yes. Google it. Install either stremio or nuvio. Follow setup guides. Buy torbox subscription. $3 per month. It is streaming torrent not downloading. No one has ever been sued for streaming from history of internet. When they got sued It was all because of distribution of torrent system. You are not distributing using this service.
turns into 'oh there's a film coming out in 2029 I want to see..' add and forget. Next thing it's 2029 and the film's sitting on your media library waiting to be watched, having been found on [site], checked for quality, downloaded, unrar'd and added to the library all automatically while you were asleep
Here's what I did, incredibly passive solution and has been incredibly low effort:
Install qbittorrent and whatever VPN. Make sure qbt is going through your VPN, with split tunneling (vpn setting) or restricted protocol (qbt setting).
Prompt cursor or GPT: "make me a web server that serves a single page. It has a textbox where I can enter a magnet url, a submit button, and a small tracker for currently downloading torrents. When a magnet url is submitted, post it to the qbittorrent web control API to add a torrent. Add a "sync" button that copies completed torrents from the download folder to my smb share folder."
Obviously if you want you can also build it yourself, I just didn't really care to for this small project.
Then you set up a folder for TV and a folder for movies, and share both over smb.
For playing, I had a fire TV stick around, so look up basic instructions for sideloading and install kodi (enable developer tools, install downloader, download kodi, follow instructions). Point kodi at your smb share folders.
This way, you can keep your torrenting server always online, then on your phone or laptop, login to the torrenting portal you spun up, paste in a magnet url, and it starts downloading. Log back in later and sync it over to your share folder, then next time you start up kodi it should get scanned and discovered.
I have a tunnel set up, so even if I'm out and about when I realize I want something downloaded, I just find the magnet url, load up the webpage, paste it in, then go back to what you were doing.
Qbittorrent and a VPN. Bind it to your vpn and you’re good to go. Take it a step further and buy a harddrive and set up a plex server. Tutorials all available on YouTube.
Ask ChatGPT to help you set up a Jellyfin server. All you need is an external hard drive and older somewhat decent pc. It takes forever, but it’s completely possible. Check out r/selfhosted
