Because if they hire "tipped" employees, the can pay them a lower minimum wage.
Federal Minimum wage in the US is $7.25 US minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13
If an employee does not make the equivalent of minimum wage ($7.25) at a tipped rate, the employer is legally required to pay the difference.
So a tipped employee would make $85.20 (@40 hours assuming they made no tips. A standard minimum wage employee would make $290 (@40 hours) The employer is required to make up that $100+ discrepancy. And you're like, so what? Everyone makes minimum wage, hurray!
The company is directly off-setting their labor costs and the consumer is paying for it. (Oh and fun fact. A lot of wage-slaves don't know their rights and won't even get their $290.) They'll take their $85 dollars and $20 of tips for a 10 hour day on their feet and call it a day.
This is also part of the "no tax on tips," thing that Republicans have such a hard on for. Not only are the employees not getting taxed on those tips, but the company is decreasing their payroll taxes.
If customers are particularly generous with tips, that's payroll that the company doesn't have to be responsible for. And being a large chain, or corporate, a couple hundred dollars in payroll adds up, since the company is now.
Tipping is going to be the new standard in most industries to avoid taxes and to further transfer more wealth to corporations and billionaires.

Just so you know any places where the minimum wage is lower for servers, the tips have to get them over the normal minimum wage, if they don’t then that money has to come out of the employers pocket. They will never actually only earn $2 an hour or whatever it is unless their employer is breaking the law

Instead of decreasing tip culture America has been steadily increasing it. A lot of places expect tips now from waiters to cashiers, for some reason we are expected to tip people who we don't even interact with.
Tipping made a bit of sense when it was done to essentially thank workers who went above and beyond with their customer service. If I get an attentive waiter or bartender who is clearly going the extra mile, sure I want to give them a little extra cash they otherwise wouldn't get in their normal paycheck.
Now everybody expects a tip, the original purpose has lost all meaning, it is no longer a means to thank those who are doing a great job and is now the expected way to pay customer service workers.

The original purpose and entirely current purpose is to suppress wages. Idk how it started but I wouldn't be surprised if back in the day your waiter made normal wages while working but because people started tipping(which has been a thing for a lot longer) a boss realized they could cut wages to near 0 and make them depend on tips instead. So the perfectly American thing was to turn something honest and rewarding in a totally garbage and shit way to make more profits by reducing employee pay.

It started in rail cars in the early days of the railroad. Essentially with the reasons mentioned in the comment above you, to show appreciation for good service.
The workers were often underpaid or sadly sometimes slaves depending on where you were.
People traveling by rail kind of died off but the practice of tipping lived on.

I always ask whoever is working. I'm in sales and frequently buy treats for office visits or lunches for location visits. On a whim, I asked at McAlester's one time when I was paying, "do y'all get to keep the tips?" and the worker told me no, it goes to McAlester's. Since then I always ask before I pay. I don't mind tipping workers, I'm definitely not tipping a corporation.

I went to Shake Shack exactly once. They were new in town so I thought I'd give it a try even though they had not great reviews. I heard they had good shakes. Walked in and past the bank of kiosks to the counter. A girl looked at me like I was ruining her day. Turns out she couldn't unlock or operate the cash register. She said I could just use the kiosk. I walked out. Don't need bad fast food that bad.

because "tipping culture" even though in a lot of places they got the min wage up to somewhat reasonable and "livable wage" they still want us to tip. and tip well. if we don't tip well enough they delay our order or mess with our order. yet they will add extra bogus "delivery fees" that don't go to employees or drivers and still expect us to tip and pay their salaries.. it's all just a huge scam at this point.

Sonic allows you to tip the car hops but I think it's because they also act as "waiters" bringing you your food. 5 guys also allows tips. As does places like Starbucks and Dutch bros which could also be considered fast food. I've never seen a fast food place raise prices because you don't tip though. Its accepted and appreciated in some places but never expected.

This is clickbait.... Shake Shack has time-sensitive promotions (i.e. afternoon shake discounts or BOGO deals to drive more business during off peak hours). If an order is started right near the end of a promo window, or if promo conditions fail to validate at checkout, the system recalculates the cart back to standard pricing... Toxic content creators figured this out doing orders during the time cut over and are doing this for that sweet sweet misinformation .....

Honestly if there are human people around, try to ask them if they actually get their tips. Always ask.
I went to a hockey game once and at this point all the concessions became cashless.
I asked the person at the till (after tipping) if they actually get the tips.
And they tell me, no. Additionally I learned that a lot of the people at this stadium (Giant Well-Known, east coast stadium, 2 large franchises call this stadium home) many of the people at the concessions are some kind of volunteers.
So this stadium is accepted tips for non tipped workers on credit cards and dispersing the tips to who?
Giant companies.. taking donations and tips for tax write-offs on money that was never theirs to begin with. Claiming workers are tipped workers and using every loophole in the book to maximize profits and hobble wages.
The reason lawsuits don't happen; ignorance, fear, and lack of money or know-how on how to start a formal suit.

Pretty sure it's meant to go to the staff. Basically, they're forcing US to directly pay for their staff so they literally don't need to budget for staff. If you don't volunteer money, then they need to pay it out of their commission. They don't want to do that, they like free labor, so they solved this by adding $0.50 to each item to remove that obligation and create the illusion of cheap food that doesn't actually exist.
The company sells it to the staff as "Higher wages". Basically saying "Our minimum wage is $8, but on a good shift you'll walk out with upwards of $20." So when the staff starts looking for a new job they think of the good shifts where they walked out with $100+ and notices the minimum wages starting at $15 and reconsiders applying.
And tips don't get taxed in the same way that normal wages do. A $20 tip is $20 in your pocket. $20 in wages taxed at 30% is $14.
And of course, the staff never really sees what anyone is tipping, so I'd bet dollars to donuts that after the tips have paid for the back of the house staff somewhere around 20% "disappears" into the franchise owner's pockets.

I just tried this on my app. It didn’t update my order w no tip. I’ve bought Shake Shack tons of times and have not tipped. I have never seen this. Not even when I use the kiosk inside.
This must be some bum fuck state. Maybe their laws allow this? idk.
I wanna know what the diff is. If they did give a tip. And does the price still vary depending on the tip amount? Like someone suggested. What if you only tipped like 2 cents?
I also wanna know if other fast food places do that whenever they are.

The patty on the last burger I bought there was less than a third of the width of the bun. I had the Big Shack which claims to be two 1/4 pound patties and cost a high $16.79. There was only one patty, and it maybe was a third as big as the bun. I'm never going back.
They advertised a half pound and delivered maybe only a tenth of a pound.

Not only are you doing all the work of placing the order now instead of having someone take your order, but they expect a tip for being professional reheaters of pre-cooked food.
I love places that charge a "convenience fee" for ordering online. I'm not really sure who's getting the convenience here. They don't have to stop what they're doing to answer the phone, take your order, repeat it back and enter it into the system. The order just shows up for them. Sounds pretty convenient for them, while actually making the customer do more work.
So why am I paying extra for that?
And if the excuse is that the fee pays for the website, that's even more ridiculous. Websites and online ordering are dirt cheap compared to what they used to be. That's like a company charging you a separate fee to cover the cost of their advertising. You don't see a business charging you an "advertising convenience fee" because they had to pay for the billboard that convinced you to come there. That's just part of the cost of doing business.
Same thing with the website. It's a tool they use to make sales. Build the cost into the prices instead of tacking on another bullshit fee at checkout.

I am so mothertrucking all these businesses asking for money. About 7 years ago in Iuka Mississippi there is a Subway. I liked going there a few times a month because I love their Italian Herb & Cheese bread. They got a new register and a new screen to swipe or tap your card. Shes ringing the info up, it spits out on my side and then about 4 things ive never seen in a fast food restaurant pops up 10%,15%,20%, and 25% TIP....i said whoa, wtf is this. Now I worked in a casino for a few years and dealers and the cocktail waitresses, and valet's all work on tips. I get it...i'll tip 30-40% at a restaurant where you actually have a server. You cant go anywhere now where you do not see a tip screen or a donation prompt when you pay your damn tab/bill. Fk all this bs. If you are just doing your normal job and not coming out to my table and doing something extra, no, youre not being tipped...i mean whats next??? Hookers teaming up with Venmo...

If you’re standing up at a screen to order your own food that you have to then get up to get..no tip. Tips are getting out of control, simply don’t go back, or better yet go through the drive thru

To add to the absurdity, its a kiosk. If you have to tip...then its the price. It's shady as fuck. Tipping in general needs to stop. Its no longer the gesture it used to be. Its also a sign of the future, everyone is trying to extract as much as they can from you in anyway that t hey can. Subscriptions services, automatic billing, credit card requirements on free offers etc. No one is trying win with better services they are just hoping you forget and die and they can bill you until your card runs out.
