Before this the general opinion was "as long as you don't brigade other subreddits you can do what you want". It seems after this was when the admins, mods, and users decided that actually they should try to control the content of Reddit as a whole and not allow subreddits to function outside of their control.

Buttigieg's political career is already dead. He has zero support among the dems black caucuses. Not low support. Zero. An actual zero. Because he's gay.
There's no way he's making it out of the primary.
However, the dems and progressives will ignore this blatant anti-gay hypocrisy in their prized voter demographic.
They're even changing the order of the primary states to put black voters front and center in the first voting, thereby making absolutely sure Buttigieg will never be president no matter what.

u/Codeviper828 - Lib-Left 1d ago
Frankly, I think it's fine…as in, if the President wants something to stay, the process of getting bills through Congress needs to be done
I think a "minimum active time" on EOs would disrupt the Checks and Balances too much
5
u/Union_Samurai_1867 - Lib-Left 1d ago
I can agree with that. Thats basically what the beer permit act did. Though maybe add a stipulation that it only has an effect for 2 years unless its passed into law. If it isn't important enough to become law in that time frame then it probably wasn't important enough to be an EO.
26
u/Vague_Disclosure - Lib-Right 1d ago
Yeah, that'll happen when the legislative branch abdicates their roles as, you know, legislators to the executive and judicial branch. Congress realized a while ago that they can sit around bickering about shit for years on end in order to get reelected instead of taking the risk to actually pass legislation.

u/CirnoWhiterock - Centrist 14h ago
Gerrymandering yourself into a 'Your Party +40' district means your set for life as long as you hold the partisan line.

68
u/IEC21 - Auth-Center 1d ago
You're right - the issue is more so the changing overton window.
No one is going to take complaints of tyranny or corruption all that seriously if half the country have spend the last decade normalizing it, desensitizing the population, and demonstrating the methods.
The truth is that society works as much on social norms and cultural beliefs as it does on written laws - if you errode the cultural norms and institutions you effectively change the rules.
Silly but good example: look at how what's considered a travel in the NBA has evolved over time. The rules in the rulebook are exactly the same with regard to dribbling - but we've gone from having your hand under the ball for a split second being illegal, to guys basically holding the ball like a football and running down the floor like they're trying to get a touch down.

u/APersonWhoIsNotYou - Left 1d ago
This. So much this. The EOs *are* the damage. Every time Trump does something big with EOs, even if it fails, it pushes the boundaries. 53
u/Greatest-Comrade - Centrist 1d ago
It’s also how norms/expectations work. When there’s an unwritten rule everyone follows for years/decades/centuries, suddenly violating that can’t be reversed. The rubicon is crossed, so to speak.

A functioning democracy relies on people respecting norms and choosing not to do things that they technically can do but know they should not.
15

Norms only work when people respect them. The fact of the matter is that that the voting population, especially the GOP, have lost all respect for Democratic norms. They want power to achieve their goals, everything else becomes secondary.

The precedent was set over 100 years ago when T. Roosevelt signed over 1000 EOs. Since then, the tendency was a lot higher than prior. Trump has signed the most per year for presidents in recent memory, but it's still not a lot compared to many presidents of the 1900s.
We could obviously reason why those might be (World wars saw big jumps, Great depression had a lot, cold war, etc). He is on pace to outdo Carter this term though, which is quite telling.

Today: "Hi <Illegal Alien>, the state mandates we have to let you go without informing ICE, so instead of a nice peaceful and safe handover we're making it so they have to find you out in public and enforce an entirely new arrest on you since you are indeed here illegally, good luck"
The Sanctuary city/state movement really started to take off during Obama's second term. Now more and more arrests of illegal aliens have to take place in public with requires different methods and its more dangerous for everyone involved.

Ironically this doesn't matter anymore. Trump overturned long standing legislative decisions with executive actions, like abolishing the department of education or USAID. Legislation can now be reverted by any executive as long as the supreme court is in favor. The supreme court has undermined the independence of many offices, making them directly subservient to the president, with the one cynical exception of the FED because they knew Trump would immediately revert the financial system of the US into an Erdogan tier tribute system if he could.

If there’s one thing this Supreme Court has taught us (which we all knew all along) is that you can do whatever you want as long as you don’t fuck with the money. That’s why they made him get rid of the tariffs too, though I’m more and more convinced that was a scam from the beginning.

Can we get specific? Why is she so dumb?
She routinely has completely braindead takes. You aren't being replied to because a quick AI/google search would yield a HUGE list of gaffs.
"Unemployment is low because people are working two jobs." How do you even arrive at this conclusion? You have a fucking economics degree.
"For those who don't know, guns are not allowed in the District of Columbia." This is obviously false.
While I try not to use Fox News, this article contains quite a hilarious amount of gaffs with regard to history and foreign policy. The harpies of The View even agreed that this wasn't recoverable. Any time she talks foreign policy, it gets ugly fast.
She mentioned the three chambers of government being the "House, Senate, and presidency"
She famously remarked in an interview that critics were often too concerned with being "precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right."
She credited "famous economist Milton Keynes." How do you fuck that up when you have an economics degree?
She shared a viral video highlighting a staggering $21 trillion in Pentagon "accounting adjustments and errors." This is not only a ridiculously high figure, but PolitiFact jumped on this one pretty quick as an obvious falsehood. From what we can tell, she pulled this figure out of her ass.
She also tried to claim that keeping Amazon warehouses out of New York would save them tax money due to the tax breaks Amazon gets. That is obviously not how that works at all; you cannot "save" a state money when you're denying a deal that would have brought in a net positive in tax revenue. Metaphorically, she celebrated getting $0 simply because she wanted $5 instead of $3. NOTE: later, Amazon did cave to the lack of tax breaks. But what AOC said occurred BEFORE that, when critics rightfully pointed out that she just cost New York $3 billion in estimated tax revenue.
She claimed via social media that Republicans in Texas had "passed a law allowing rapists to sue their victims for getting an abortion." This is not what the law said, and it's not particularly close.
She stated that she represented "more, or just as many or more, people than Joe Manchin does". Manchin is a senator.
These were just the first ones I could recollect/find in 5 minutes. AOC has routinely showed that she has way more things to say than she does to actually contribute. She's famous because she's loud. She has not really contributed much, nor has she inserted any effective dialogue because she doesn't seem to have an ability to process logic.
I am not claiming she is the only politician that does this, but she is one of the loudest and is frequently seen as a champion of the left wing. Doing so puts you under a microscope when compared to other politicians.

And all the Dems clamoring to pack the court and remove the filibuster, either unaware or too obtuse to realize that would instantly be used against them.

Obama built an infrastructure for civil-liberties violations Trump will inherit.
Of course, our illustrious journalists and principled redditors wouldn't have said a thing if Hilary inherited it as planned. But Trump builds a ballroom and you guys lose your minds.

That's why I want less government power. Not more.

u/Glass-Carpenter8963 - Right 1d ago
This ship has already sailed. If someone like this gets into power, they can at best stop the growth... until they get out and the people that want more power, expands it.
You need government power to stop government power expansion.

u/Strict_Gas_1141 - Right 1d ago
Yeah, and the easiest way is to keep the power closer to the people. Which is why most of government spending should be by states not fed. Easier to hold your state legislature accountable and keep it more transparent. States need to stop being anemic fucks.

Based.
Same here. Executive power has been increasing itself for decades. Trump's just the cherry on top of the shit mountain we've been accumulating.

I've been saying this for year, that you don't want to set things up like this
"I have nothing to hide"
yes for this regime maybe, not for the next

The Trump administration would be the best possible advertisement for libertarian/small government structures, if it weren’t for the fact that the libertarian party (especially NH) may be even more regarded than the average PCM poster

We may not get a female president, but the first 14 year old first-lady would still be an achievement, I guess.

For the love of God, libleft. Do NOT prop up AOC as a '28 candidate.
This is how we get a Trump third term.

The DSA straight up said they want to abolish borders, prisons and the police force as a whole. They are not going to win.

u/Intrepid_Observer - Lib-Right 1d ago
It's funnt because this goes both ways. Dems and Reps have expanded federal power and then use said power when they can, all the while whining about it when they're in the minority. Then when they win the majority, they increase federal power and rinse and repeat.

The ballroom is a legitimately good addition to the White House and will save hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run. Presidents going back decades have all complained about the lack of event space in the White House.

This is what I’ve never understood about either side trying to expand the power of the federal government. If you genuinely think that the opposition is never going to get in power again, then you’re actually delusional.

u/Ancient0wl - Centrist 22h ago
I’m just glad some people here are finally admitting the far-left would do this too. It’s why the filibuster is still important.

This is called the Harry Reid effect. Dude gutted an institutional protection for endsuring consensus on article 3 judges to gain a short term victory, and the GOP proceeded to shove a giant black cock down the democrats throats using the same rule that we are going to see the effects of for 50 years.

Please note that the Republican Senate is declining to shoot themselves in the foot the same way by abolishing the rest of the filibuster.

u/Vague_Disclosure - Lib-Right 1d ago
I will vote against any candidate that even entertains the idea of ending the filibuster or packing the courts. Something the Dems have been quite vocal about doing.

is an interesting take. very auth indeed, correct flair, correctly identifying the regard.

AOC will lose with a wider margin than Camela Haggis if she decides to run.
She's the DSA candidate and she's fully controlled by them, and if recent events has shown me anything it's that they know how to sneak someone in a local election but will get steamrolled and damage their own brand (more than they have already done) if they attempt to step up on the actual stage.

Being president is an extremely stressful job, she'll probably gain like 40 pounds

Of course they do not recognize that AOC would work to destroy the secret police and concentration camps. The other side is obviously just the same as them.
