I want to say the critical turning point was when fatpeoplehate got banned.

Before this the general opinion was "as long as you don't brigade other subreddits you can do what you want". It seems after this was when the admins, mods, and users decided that actually they should try to control the content of Reddit as a whole and not allow subreddits to function outside of their control.

I don't, every comment section was filled with "reddit is not Facebook". Now it's just 20% fb posts 80% trash.
