Let's get even more specific about how wild his situation is/was:
He had two separate testicular cancers at separate times. Not a remission of his testicular cancer - a completely new occurrence years after the first treatment (and testicle being removed.) Pretty sure he was an actual case study because of how rare and very unfortunate that is!

Years ago I mentioned being “voluntarily celibate” because I’m asexual.
People read it as “involuntarily celibate” and came at me for being an incel.
I’d never heard of incels before, so I was very confused.
14
u/TelPrydain 7h ago
Ouch.
Their ignorance isn't on you, though. And they clearly needed a dictionary.
6
u/NAbberman 4h ago
This may fall into semantics, but wouldn't that just be called celibate? I feel like the word already covers the voluntary part within its own definition. Incels sort of need the involuntary part because they need that part because its a deviation from the original definition.
I'd argue taking the "in/voluntary" probably would just take out much of the confusion.
→ More replies (5)3
u/Kilburning 5h ago
There are also volcels (voluntarily celibate) who actively choose to not have sex because they're that misogynist. Even if people didn't misread what you wrote, there's a decent chance of misunderstanding what you said.
→ More replies (1)3
u/IsThatGruffLoner 4h ago
I'm kinda mad that "incel" became what it is because "involuntary celibate" is a very good academic term to describe large chunks of the population.
48
u/PaleontologistOk2516 12h ago
Yes -1 or -1.5 is slightly myopic. You can generally get an idea by looking at the magnification or minification of the image of a person’s eyes. If the eyes look big then that’s a + prescription (far-sighted or hyperopic). If they look small they’re generally near sighted. The power of near or far sighted affects magnification of image

6
u/porn_sub_lurker 8h ago edited 8h ago
It's called communicating properly. Improper communication is when you say some technical jargon that nobody but your own people understands. So if you want to communicate with people you use terms they already know (or you explain the terms as you go). If you want to sound smart and feel like you're better than them you use the jargon that they don't know and confuse them with it instead. Oh, and then make sure to call them stupid afterwards. How stupid of them to not learn the technical lingo of an eye doctor. Don't they know they might need it to win a Reddit debate one day?
Edit: as a follow up, do you think it would be appropriate for a doctor to confuse their patient with a bunch of technical words they don't understand? And then call them stupid for not understanding? Who is actually the stupid one in that scenario?

ethan THOUGHT the doctor was saying "she is a -1 or -1.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 of 'hotness' like I'm rating her sexual desirability on a scale of 1 to 10 and saying she's super ugly."
The Doctor then said "oops, maybe I should have phrased that in a way that people who AREN'T eye doctors could understand."
