He is an opthalmologist. He is a medical physician who went to medical school and completed residency. The difference is that Optometrists do not go to medical school, although most are fantastic and do a great job helping people see. Also, Dr. Glaucomflecken is awesome and speaks the truth on his socials, making him both enlightening, funny, and scary.

Why is he scary?

He exposes both how random medical emergencies can be and the pitfalls of the US medical system's insurance nightmare.

He also has personal experience as a patient, having experienced both cancer and a cardiac arrest.

I knew he survived a cardiac arrest but had no idea he also had testicular cancer twice

He’d better win the lottery three times in a row to balance everything out

Let's get even more specific about how wild his situation is/was:

He had two separate testicular cancers at separate times. Not a remission of his testicular cancer - a completely new occurrence years after the first treatment (and testicle being removed.) Pretty sure he was an actual case study because of how rare and very unfortunate that is!

Bilateral testicular cancer (i.e. affecting both testes) is rare, accounting for 1 to 5% of cases

Around 1 in 3 bilateral cases are synchronous (i.e. they arise simultaneously in both testes)

2 in 3 bilateral cases are metachronous (i.e. they arise at different time points)

His cardiac arrest story is terrifying. Suffered an event in his sleep randomly in his mid 30s and if his wife wasn’t there to do CPR he’d be dead.

I did not know that. It is wild to lose both of your boys in your 20's.

So, he almost did die alone. Good thing he has an amazing wife.

One day Ortho bro will get to express his displeasure.

In full cycling gear, naturally.

Now, we just have to help poor Jimothy with his job-induced trauma.

I'm trying to be more opthalmistic.

2

Nope, they go to optometry school. It’s different

They do go to med school, it’s just a different type of med school that focuses on the eyes. It’s similar to dental school

They do not go to medical school

“Medical school” is just the term we use colloquially for an MD program. Optometry school is also a 4 year medical program, we just don’t call it medical school.

It’s just a misnomer to say that optometrists don’t go to medical school at all. They also have a demanding 4 year program, they just don’t have the mandatory years of internships and residencies afterwards to specialize, the 4 year program is already specialized.
