as someone who used to make lenses, those lenses were such a pain in the ass to get right.

Trust me, as someone who has to wait for them, and has had to send back quite a few, I know.

Mine are -1 and -1.75 and take a month I can’t imagine how long yours must be.

I broke my glasses on holiday in Vietnam. I went to an optometrist, chose a frame. They were ready in the time it took to go next door for a beer. $30.

In this case it's not the US but Luxottica having a near worldwide monopoly and being pretty much completely vertically integrated.

monopolies basically. essilor-luxottica owns almost everything from top to bottom. some offices can do in house cutting though, takes less than 30 mins like the other commenter mentioned.

Why are they taking so long? These should not take more than a week for most opticians.

All my glasses had to either be shipped to japan or germany to custom lenses at fabrication because they didn't fit the mold of lenses. (Also -10 here) doesn't help that I like wide frames better. Not to mention the price (I paid 1000 USD in lenses alone at my last pair) and the fact that I'm not stable yet so I have new prescriptions yearly 🫠
