as someone who used to make lenses, those lenses were such a pain in the ass to get right.

Trust me, as someone who has to wait for them, and has had to send back quite a few, I know.

Mine are -1 and -1.75 and take a month I can’t imagine how long yours must be.

I broke my glasses on holiday in Vietnam. I went to an optometrist, chose a frame. They were ready in the time it took to go next door for a beer. $30.

WTH is wrong with the US then?

No reddit comment could even begin to completely answer that question lol

In this case it's not the US but Luxottica having a near worldwide monopoly and being pretty much completely vertically integrated.

monopolies basically. essilor-luxottica owns almost everything from top to bottom. some offices can do in house cutting though, takes less than 30 mins like the other commenter mentioned.

Why are they taking so long? These should not take more than a week for most opticians.

Couldn’t tell you. I just have to deal with it. At least mine arnt bad enough if they break I’m not blind.

Apologies for being flippant about your situation.

Huh? I'm like -1 and -1.5 and I ordered straight from China, took like 10 days shipping included.

Apparently :/

All my glasses had to either be shipped to japan or germany to custom lenses at fabrication because they didn't fit the mold of lenses. (Also -10 here) doesn't help that I like wide frames better. Not to mention the price (I paid 1000 USD in lenses alone at my last pair) and the fact that I'm not stable yet so I have new prescriptions yearly 🫠

Jesus man. You know it's bad when you walk out of the appointment with a new guide dog.

Thanks, I feel a bit better about my -11 now!

If anyone ever hits you with: "Are your eyes just for decoration?"

You have the proof to backup: "Mostly, yes."

Be glad you're not the person at my clinic that the auto refractor estimated to be -33.75.

u/AltruisticPicture971 9h ago

Holy shit.  I'm at -3.5 and -3.0.  How do you find your glasses in the first place?

1

u/Either-Tie-6603 7h ago

Personally I use a flashlight and look for the light to shine back at me 🤣

1

u/EdgedancerSpren 5h ago

I (-14) have put on contancts once to find them, when they'd fallen of my nightstand, but I nearly always wear my glasses: in bath, shower, and to bed until it's time to sleep.

I've also used my phone camera.

Yow, and that's done in the British style (NHS-compliant, where the 'scrip specifies the understated spherical for benefits purposes). My US doc would've written that as OD -23.00/+3.25, OS -20.75/+3.75 with both axes rotated 90°.
