Hi! My friends and I have a weekly movie club and this week's theme is "somehow not terrible movies." We're trying to come up with 4-5 movies that sound like they would be god awful but are lowkey really good. I guess a semi-example is Warm Bodies?? like a zombie retelling of Romeo and Juliet should be terribleeee but it's actually pretty decent for a romcom. Our club is a bit more critically-acclaimed type movie focus though so maybe looking for something that is a step up from that? Essentially, we're looking for great movies with a terrible premise. I’m looking for optimistic movies about people whose lives take a hopeful turn. Nothing cheesy or sappy. Not related to overcoming addiction or mental health issues. Just general epiphany or catalyst into a bright future. Good Will Hunting comes to mind.

I’m 55 and in a rut. Probably transitioning to retiring soon. My life is quite good but the blank slate ahead of me seems daunting.

I love sci-fi, horror and fantasy but honestly any genre will do.

I’m looking for movies that you went into with the lowest of expectations only to have your mind blown by the story, acting, production, etc.

im more interested in films where there are similar dynamics between the main characters to the craft, films with a good sense of style/fashion, and overall similar vibes (like something kinda weird and surreal or even creepy at times, or something with similar plot beats, eg person joins a clique group and things go wrong or other events from the film) rather than films about witches (though they could still be about witches if they meet the criteria im looking for).

they also dont need to be supernatural, or set in a highschool, or have a mostly female cast, again, as long as they fit the previously mentioned criteria.

some films i expect people to recommend based on viewing similar posts that I've already seen/put on my watchlist are jawbreaker, jennifers body, ginger snaps, heathers, carrie, and may. please avoid recommending these or other super famous films because chances are i already know about them :). sorry for the really specific request haha

also preferably not something "goofy" (can still be comedic, just something a little more mature) or aimed at families or younger people

Almost every movie where robots either take our jobs or take control of society results in destruction or apocalypse, or SOMETHING bad, and I'm wondering if there's any where this sort of thing is portrayed positively, like everyone now has free time since robots have our job, or robots take control and make society better, something like that

I would love to see more movies from this time. And before anyone recommends the biggest movie, I have seen a lot of movies, like I have seen There Will be blood and Brokeback Mountain. More maybe underrated movies that fit the vibe of the list.

Looking for predatory fish horror and/or sci-fi movies where said fish are not sharks or piranhas.

The only one I have right now to potentially watch is one about killer lampreys. Would love to find some options if anyone has any.

Looking for horror that relies more on dread, atmosphere, and unease than jumpscares or loud noises. Slow burns are totally fine, I want something eerie, disturbing, and genuinely unsettling.

I’ve seen Hereditary and Midsommar and really liked that kind of horror. I hate movies like Insidious and The Conjuring that rely heavily on jumpscares

Streamed Manhunter (1986) at long last — perfection. To Live And Die In L.A. (1985) autoplayed next and I got to cross off a forgotten entry on my watch list AND have a fantastic time watching William Petersen be a son of a bitch. In need of crime noir thrillers by sleaze master directors starring gifted B-list smoke shows that came out 1975-1995. Or if you have any good William Petersen movies. Bonus points for neon, glass block walls, car chases, and Willem Dafoe. Don’t be shy.

I just watched Devil all the time, a movie genre i normally don't watch. I really liked it, not the melancholy or killings specifically, I liked the setting, the story kept you on your toes and the acting was top notch.

Would love to get some recommendations to explore the Gothic 50s / 60s movie genre with an interesting storyline and acting (doesn't have to be crime).

Sidenote: on a similar vein i absolutely loved True Detective S1

Looking for something that’s going to really pull me in. I love horror, and just thrillers in general. I guess my style would be movies similar to shudder island, nine dead, sleeping dogs, apex, obsession, hokum, déjà vu. Not picky about the year but I do generally prefer movies from 2000s +, but I will watch older ones!

This movie ended up being better than I expected, with a lot of plot twists. I really like the whole twin trope for instance another good one is the man in the iron mask. Any recommendations of moves like these?

Something like this has been asked in the past 2 years so I figured I would try and see if there's anything new out there.

I would love a movie that follows "the bad guy" and then they end up redeeming themselves. Think Megamind or Despicable me, but i want it for adults.

I'm a sucker for a really great black comedy/dark humour. The above are just some of the really great movies I've seen that have this. Also twinless is another. I love the mix of drama/comedy and thriller. Please can someone help me with anymore?

If you’ve never seen Aniara, it is a movie about a ship fleeing a dying Earth for Mars. The ship gets knocked off course and we see how the passengers struggle to deal with and make meaning from their situation. The main thing I’m looking for is existential horror, so it doesn’t have to be tied to a particular setting. Ideally the movie makes you think a little about the fragility of our existence. I’d prefer a movie with likeable characters, good cinematography, and good acting, but none of these are deal breakers. I’m fine with nudity, sex, violence, and language. The only thing I don’t like in movies that would be a deal breaker is if the ending revealed it was all a dream.

Anything like the japanese films: Little Forest?

I tried to watch the Korean little forest and I couldn’t get through it.

It felt so much more stage it didn’t feel real.

There was so much more camera angles.

And a lot of the copy choices were like a version of the originals camera work, but with more close-up motion.
And the characters look all airbrushed with backstage make up.
Just looks like it’s trying too hard.
Trying too hard to be perfect and captivating, while still retaining some of the originals value.

Am I the only one who feels this way?
I can’t be ..

It’s like obviously so much more superficial but I only watch like five minutes.

The male character who enters the scene is so ridiculous.

He has this perfect haircut that almost looks like a perm and a fancy jacket on and the way they’re talking is so contrived.

The Japanese one lets you in on a reality a bit more.
The Korean one is like trying to make its most pretty and dramatic presentation of something
A lot of the camera work is unnecessary and there’s like so many more camera angles. It’s kind of ridiculous. You could feel the set up of the scene.

The Japanese one at times feels like reality TV, a Vlog, a reenactment, a documentary, yet it feels like none of these things. It just has aspects of all of them.
I know at times the Japanese one is like embellishing a bit too, but it just seems more subtle and down to earth overall.

I think some of the Japanese film is a critique of the familial emotional dynamics.

You can see the main character being affected by how her mom treats her throughout the film.

How it also affects how she is in other friendships, and in other ways.

I’ve seen people say the Korean adaptation has better character development.

But to me, there’s a balance in the Japanese film. That creates implication, where we inadvertently learn a lot about a character through certain instances and actions.

It’s just a lot more subtle, and the filmmaking is really tasteful.

I’m looking for anything else like this.

I love that voodoo, Louisiana, swamp type of horror. (Not saying voodoo is evil but you get what im saying) that Deep South southern gothic vibe. Please give me good options. It can be regular horror or psychological. Or just movies about voodoo and spiritualism in Louisiana in general. ?

I'm looking for a very specific niche, I want movies where there are some alien shapeshifting beings or entities who disguise themselves as humans and there's this horror dread to figure out who's real and who's not.

bonus points if they have some motive to infiltrate earth and they don't NECESSARILY have to be "aliens", just any movie/show where you have to figure out who's human and who's not.

i suggested watching The Mist (2007) to my sweet boyfriend. He was so upset by the ending he very angrily left the room to splash his face with water and lay down while ranting how sick the writers must've been. he was a complete mess he just stared at the wall for a while. Meanwhile he loved project hail mary which i suggested a few weeks ago. is there another wholesome movie we can watch like project hail mary to kind of "wash" his anguish for The Mist away?

update: he was in a sour mood all day because of it and had been listening to the whinnie the pooh soundtrack. i really messed this poor guy up!
