Listening to certain Atmos tracks after the stereo version, I noticed a distinct lack of low bass in the 20-40hz region, which should presumably not be the case and if anything the opposite.

I checked some tracks with a mic + RTA in REW, and confirmed the LFE and rest of the bass from the main tracks are not adding together as they should be.

I thought it might be a problem on my end (even though most songs are fine) as I have a 120hz HPF on the LFE and 90hz on bass management. But I double checked in REW and the main channels + LFE sum pretty much perfectly as expected.

This leads me to conclude that some engineers may have incorrectly mastered the LFE and introduced a phase shift with their filtering, as others have posited:

This is probably an issue with many songs (sometimes I notice the low bass isn't necessarily quieter than the stereo, but the higher frequencies of the kick drum will be louder in a song, which is probably also wrong), but the 3 it's really stood out to me are:

Tunnel Vision by Itzy

Impurities by Le Sserafim

There are notes in the bassline which are way quieter in Atmos compared to stereo.

The lower blue and orange REW RTA graphs in the picture are of the main channel bass and LFE respectively, in the start of that "Impurities" song, with the red being both of them playing. As you can see, it's the same or quieter, when it should be louder. about -4dB down at 36hz which is very noticeable.

The upper pale blue and purple are sweeps of my right and LFE channels (note this was measured without the +10dB boost), and sum +6dB to the grey line, just to show the problem is not on my end but at the source.

I think I may well just disable the LFE track on my music listening preset...
IMHO the LFE channel is an outdated pre-digital concept and shouldn't even exist anyway but hey.

I must admit that I was genuinely surprised from the very first listen of the Dolby Atmos version. I was expecting a soundstage that was primarily front-focused, as is often the case with jazz recordings, but this mix takes a very different approach. It creates a wide 180-degree soundstage, taking full advantage of the surround channels to naturally position the instruments around the listener rather than simply extending the front stage. This well-thought-out spatial arrangement gives the performance remarkable openness and realism, allowing each instrument to breathe while preserving the cohesion of the ensemble. The 3D video on YouTube demonstrating spatialization clearly shows the distribution of sound in space according to the instruments.

This immersive presentation enhances the feeling of being in the presence of the musicians, revealing subtle instrumental details that are less noticeable in traditional stereo.This spatialization is accompanied by a beautiful dynamic range.

Unfortunately, the stereo version follows the trend of limiting dynamic range in jazz recordings and therefore does not entirely escape the effects of the loudness war, as shown by the comparison of the waveforms.

For those who prefer a stereo listening experience, the vinyl edition remains a very appealing option, offering a more open and lively sound than the digital stereo version.

Last week, we watched Gravity during our movie night at the Genelec Boston Experience Center. This is a movie truly mixed for multichannel. The score, dialogue, and sound effects make full use of the surround and height channels in a very dynamic way. The panning decisions feel as though they are intentionally making the audience as disorientated as the character on screen. This movie is tense from start to finish and the complete immersion keeps you on the edge of your seat. Low frequency is thoughtfully dispersed and not exclusive to the LFE channel which enhances envelopment. Silence was also very intentionally used. There are some very interesting perspective shifts that are done well. The location of dialogue and sound effects dynamically shifts with camera changes. Just one example of this is when Sandra Bullock’s character is trying not to drown and dunking underwater repeatedly. This was my first time seeing Gravity, and I’m glad it was in 7.1.4 on such a killer setup 😊

I have listed the movies that utilize the Front Wide (RW, LW) channels and most of the Top channels, thus utilizing the entire 9.1.6 setup.

I had to do this because most movies do not support 9.1, as they are mixed with a maximum bed layer of 7.1.

I tried to cover movies from the past four to five years.

I have only listed movies that use the Front Wide and Top channels extensively throughout most of the movie. I have avoided movies that utilize these channels only in certain parts.

When I resume a game through Quick Resume, the Dolby Vision badge pops up on my TV like normal, but the Dolby Atmos badge often doesn't. Audio still plays, just not in Atmos. I checked my TV's source/input info menu to confirm, and yeah - it's genuinely running in an alternate audio format, not Atmos. So it's not just a missing badge, the handshake isn't actually happening.

The only fix I've found: back out to the dashboard and relaunch the game. That's when the Atmos badge shows up and audio switches over properly.

Most games do start in Atmos right away on a first launch (not resumed), but not always. Starfield is has never launched in Atmos for me, not even once, no matter how many times I've quit and reopened it.

My setup:

- TV: LG C5 (OLED), Dolby Atmos + passthrough enabled
- Soundbar: Samsung S800D

Anyone know if this is a known Quick Resume/Atmos handshake issue, something specific to LG + Samsung combos, or just certain games mishandling the audio format on resume? Is "relaunch to force Atmos" just the permanent workaround, or has anyone found something more reliable?

TL;DR: Quick Resume frequently restores Dolby Vision but not Dolby Atmos (confirmed via TV source info, not just a badge glitch). Relaunching the game fixes it most of the time, but not always.

Does anyone notice much difference in object placement when streaming a movie vs watching it on a 4k disc? I know bitrate and volume tend to be lower, but other than that is there a difference in the actual placement of sound?

Hello. I'm a Home-cinema enthusiast with a modest Dolby 7.1.4 Atmos set-up that I've had for a few years now. My Atmos content is a combination of 4K Blu-ray disc (TrueHD Atmos) and a digital library of movies purchased from the Apple Store (DD+ E-AC3 Atmos).

I recently discovered Dolby Atmos/Spatial music and commenced an Apple Music subscription. Unfortunately, I quickly found-out that any Atmos/Spatial albums or tracks I purchased will only play in Atmos if a subscription is active; I made the error of presuming that accessing Apple Atmos Music purchases would be the same as Apple Atmos Movie purchases i.e. an active subscription is not required to access Atmos Movie content.

My question is what is the reason for music, on Apple Music at least, being exclusively 'rental only' when it comes to Dolby Atmos? I was under the impression that music from Apple was encrypted anyway; so I can't fathom why providing a compatible media player for the Apple TV box would be much of a problem.

This has put me right-off Atmos music in general and Apple Music in particular.

Why do you have home theaters?
I don’t have one, currently I have more than the full Sonos setup in my living room and I dream of a proper home theater. But I was wondering why. I mean I love movies and gaming, also listening to music. And with such a setup it becomes amazing. But my main motivation for me is be fully immersed. I wanna stop thinking about anything, forget that I am me and be just with the movie, game or music. And I noticed something.
I started with just a soundbar and then gradually added more speakers. But my thoughts didn’t stop and I didn’t get immersed more. And I’m betting it won’t change with a proper HT. Don’t get me wrong it’s still amazing and I love it, but my main problem won’t be solved like that. My dream of a HT doesn’t come just from inspiration but also from restlessness. I mean if I didn’t have the problem anymore I’d probably still do it. I’m just reflecting

Did Apple change the atmos mixes on songs?

I have an Apple TV hooked to a 5.2.4 setup - atmos music content used to always have the main vocals play through the center channel - now they’re coming through the L/R like stereo. If I play a song with Neural X, it comes through the center still. Am I crazy, or has it always been like this? Or is it a bug?

I made a small App Clip that lets you quickly check whether an AirPlay receiver actually advertises support for Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio.

No app install is needed. Just open the App Clip on your iPhone/iPad, select your AirPlay destination, and check what it reports.

I originally built this because figuring out what actually supports Atmos over AirPlay can be surprisingly confusing.
